Dustin Pedroia: Officially retires
Pedroia (knee) officially announced his retirement Monday, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
Persistent knee troubles made for an unfortunate end to an otherwise excellent career, with Pedroia appearing in just nine games over the last three seasons. He'll retire as a two-time World Series champion, a four-time All Star, a former Rookie of the Year and a former MVP. He'll finish his career with a .299/.365/.439 slash line to go along with his 1,805 hits, 140 homers and 138 steals.

Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia: Still no comeback plans
Pedroia (knee) is not planning a comeback, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
The Red Sox and Pedroia are in a bit of an awkward situation. The highly-respected veteran is still under contract for another season and is taking up a spot on the team's 40-man roster, forcing Boston to drop other players to complete their offseason moves. Chronic knee troubles have limited him to a total of just nine games over the last three years, however, causing him to step away from the team in May of 2019. There's been no resolution to his situation thus far, but with the 37-year-old seemingly no closer to contemplating a return to action, one could be coming soon.

Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia: Not ready to stage comeback
Manager Ron Roenicke said Tuesday that Pedroia (knee) is "not at a point where he's thinking about trying to be ready" to resume training with the Red Sox, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
The Red Sox won't be allowed to get together for workouts until Major League Baseball clears them to do so, but based on Roenicke's comments, it doesn't sound as though Pedroia is a serious candidate to rejoin Boston when training resumes. After appearing in just nine MLB games since 2018 while contending with multiple setbacks with his surgically repaired left knee, the 36-year-old Pedroia looks increasingly more likely to retire rather than resuming his playing career.

Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia: Moves to 60-day IL
Pedroia (knee) was placed on the 60-day injured list Sunday.
The move guarantees Pedroia won't rejoin the Red Sox for the first two months of the season, but that's hardly a surprise after it was announced he would continue recovering at home instead of reporting to spring training. The veteran second baseman has appeared in only nine games over the last two seasons and suffered another setback with his surgically-repaired left knee in January, so the Red Sox and fantasy owners alike shouldn't be depending on his contributions in 2020.

Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia: Staying home for spring training
Interim manager Ron Roenicke said that Pedroia (knee) won't be reporting to spring training Monday with the rest of the Red Sox's position players, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.
Pedroia's availability for the start of the season was already in significant doubt after he experienced another setback with his surgically repaired left knee in January, so it's not surprising that he'll remain at home while he continues to recover. The 36-year-old has no timeline for a return, and his career could be over if he decides another arduous rehab program isn't worth the aggravation. Boston likely isn't counting on Pedroia to contribute in 2020, with the organization instead viewing Jose Peraza and Michael Chavis as the main candidates for reps at second base this season.

Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia: Suffers another setback
Pedroia recently suffered a significant setback with his left knee, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
The veteran's availability for spring training and potentially beyond is now in question. Pedroia took some time away from the game last season to consider his future after a second straight season was cut short by injuries. He's played just nine games at the big-league level over the last two years. He didn't wind up officially retiring at that time and has been attempting to make a comeback, but this latest setback could wind up forcing him to hang up his cleats for good.

Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia: Joins team for visit
Pedroia (knee) visited teammates Tuesday, hobbling on crutches after undergoing surgery on his left knee, the Associated Press reports.
Pedroia, who underwent a procedure three weeks ago, said he'll remain on crutches for the next two weeks before beginning a 12-week program to strengthen his quadriceps and calf. After that, he'll have a better idea if baseball is in his future.
