Player Outlook
Ryne Nelson worked as a back-end starter for Arizona in 2023, but it was an underwhelming rookie campaign with a 5.31 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 96:46 K:BB across 144 innings. His 7.4 percent walk rate was solid and consistent with his time in the minors, but he had a 15.5 percent strikeout rate and a 1.5 HR/9. He still made the postseason roster and had a minimal role prior to the World Series, when he allowed just one run over 5.1 frames of valuable long relief in Game 4. Despite that strong finish, Nelson likely won't enter 2024 with any guarantee for a rotation spot, especially since Arizona made additions in free agency. However, the right-hander still has plenty of upside and was encouragingly less reliant on his fastball last season, and he could be a solid back-end piece in 2024 if he's able to better utilize his secondary offerings.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Earns rotation slot

Nelson will begin the season in the rotation, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Nelson earned the No. 5 starter job with an impressive spring training, during which he pitched to a 2.66 ERA while striking out 26 over 20.1 innings. His primary competition for the job, left-hander Tommy Henry, will also be part of the rotation early on, as he will replace Eduardo Rodriguez (lat). Nelson was knocked around over 27 starts in 2023, but he showed improved strike-throwing ability during Cactus League competition.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Five strong innings Friday

Nelson allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out nine over five innings in Friday's spring start against the Mariners. Nelson put the finishing touches on a promising spring. The right-hander finished the Cactus League with a 2.66 ERA, 26 strikeouts and seven walks over 20.1 innings (six starts). He led the competition for the final rotation spot and seems assured of one given the news that Eduardo Rodriguez (lat) will open the season on the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Delivers in fourth start

Nelson allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out two over 3.2 innings in Monday's spring start against the Athletics. Nelson kept pounding the strike zone, as the right-hander has done all spring, and he now sports a 3.09 ERA after four Cactus League starts. That includes just two walks and 14 strikeouts over 11.2 innings. The changeup was working Monday, per Jesse Borek of MLB.com, as Nelson elicited five whiffs on nine changeups. Nelson, who upped his pitch count to 66, has inched ahead of Tommy Henry to become Arizona's No. 5 starter.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Works into fourth inning

Nelson allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two over three-plus innings in Tuesday's spring start against San Diego. Nelson navigated around traffic through the first three innings but hit a road bump in the fourth, when he was pulled without retiring a batter after giving up a two-run single. Nelson and Tommy Henry have been locked in a battle for the No. 5 starter job, and the two pitchers have mirrored each other. Both had impressive outings the first two starts before each faced adversity the third time out. Nelson has allowed three runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out 12 over eight innings.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Showcasing slider early

Nelson worked on his slider over the offseason, and it's looked sharp early in camp, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Coming off Arizona's loss in the World Series, manager Torey Lovullo told Nelson that he needed to be able to throw his slider more and not be so fastball reliant. The right-hander focused on it and has looked good through two spring starts. Nelson threw two scoreless innings with five strikeouts in his first outing and followed that up with one run allowed and another five strikeouts over three innings Thursday. "It's a focus on trying to keep [opposing hitters] off balance, keep them guessing and make sure that they can't just key on the fastball," Nelson said. "When I'm just pumping heaters in there, it's pretty easy to lock in." The battle for the final spot in the rotation should come down to Nelson or Tommy Henry, who has also impressed through two Cactus League outings. Slade Cecconi is also in the mix but struggled Friday when he allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over two innings in his second appearance.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Answers Henry in rotation bid

Nelson allowed two hits and struck out five over two scoreless innings in Saturday's spring start against the Rockies. Nelson's 33-pitch performance was the talk of the post-game discussion. The right-hander threw mostly fastballs and sliders and induced eight swing-and-misses. "The velocity looked like it was spiking," manager Torey Lovullo told Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. "He started mixing in a really quality secondary pitch with that slider, I know that was something I've been emphasizing. I know he's been working hard on it and he got a ton of swing-and-miss." It was an impressive showing for Nelson, who logged a 15.5 strikeout percentage (sixth percentile per Statcast) and 6.0 K/9 in 2023. It was also a timely response after Tommy Henry's impressive Cactus League debut Friday. Nelson and Henry are seen as the main competitors for the final spot in the rotation.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Starting Saturday

Nelson will take the mound for Saturday's spring start against the Rockies, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Nelson is competing for the No. 5 starter job with several others. One of those competitors is Tommy Henry, who submitted two scoreless innings in Friday's Cactus League opener.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Part of rotation competition

Nelson is expected to compete with Tommy Henry for the final spot in the rotation, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. The top three in the rotation are set -- Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez -- and it looks like Brandon Pfaadt has the edge for the No. 4 spot, leaving Nelson and Henry to compete for the back end. Nelson spent the first four-and-a-half months of the 2023 season as part of the rotation before an August demotion. He returned to the Diamondbacks in September and made three postseason appearances as a reliever. Nelson recorded an 8-8 record and 5.31 ERA over 144 innings (29 appearances, 27 starts) with 96 strikeouts and 46 walks during the regular season.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Hit hard in Tuesday's loss

Nelson (7-8) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up six runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.1 innings as the Diamondbacks were downed 7-4 by the Mets. He struck out three. Four of the seven hits off the right-hander went for extra bases, including Ronny Mauricio's first career home run and Pete Alonso's 44th blast of the season. Nelson has been tagged for six runs in three of his four big-league starts since the beginning of August, staggering to a 10.69 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB through 16 innings over that stretch, and with Arizona fighting to hang onto a wild-card spot, manager Torey Lovullo may have to consider other options for the fifth spot in his rotation.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Recalled for start Thursday

Nelson was recalled from Triple-A Reno ahead of his scheduled start Thursday versus the Cubs. Nelson has struggled to a 5.47 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 82:37 K:BB in 125 innings (24 starts) this season at the major-league level. The 25-year-old right-hander makes for an unappealing fantasy streaming option as he matches up against a hard-charging Cubs team.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Refining slider in minors

Nelson has worked to improve his slider during his time in the minors, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Nelson's slider has shown progress over his last few starts at Triple-A Reno, with Arizona pitching coach Brent Strom noting that the right-hander is "locating it more" and "hasn't made as many mistakes with it." Nelson has made four starts for Reno since his demotion in mid-August, pitching to a respectable 3.74 ERA. He had been part of the Diamondbacks rotation for the first four-and-a-half months of the season, posting a 5.74 ERA in 24 starts. Despite a mid-90s fastball, Nelson struggled to miss bats, and the organization is hoping an improved slider will help. If the club reaches down to the minors for a starter Thursday, Nelson, whose last outing was Sept. 2, is the most likely candidate to fill the opening. Arizona needs a starter after it demoted Slade Cecconi on Sunday.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Surrenders five runs

Nelson allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one over six innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Monday. Nelson has had three good starts and two poor ones in July, with Monday's outing falling in the latter category. The right-hander was at least efficient, needing just 87 pitches (56 strikes) to get through six frames. He's now at a mediocre 4.97 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 74:33 K:BB through 112.1 innings over 21 starts this season, though he's shown little consistency from one outing to the next. He's projected for a home start versus the Mariners over the weekend.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Gets little help Friday

Nelson didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 7-2 loss to the Blue Jays, giving up two runs (one earned) on nine hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out three without walking a batter. The right-hander fell one out short of his sixth quality start of the season, getting lifted after 97 pitches (62 strikes), but despite the stingy outing Nelson was on the hook for his sixth loss of the year before Arizona managed to tie things up in the top of the seventh inning. Toronto then erupted for five runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach. Nelson has a mediocre 4.46 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB through 42.1 innings since the beginning of June, and his rotation spot could be in jeopardy if the Diamondbacks get aggressive at the trade deadline.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Twirls gem Saturday

Nelson (5-4) allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out six over 7.1 innings to earn the win Saturday over the Angels. Nelson gave up a solo home run to Anthony Rendon, but the Diamondbacks were able to take the lead in the sixth inning. After plenty of ups and downs early on, Nelson has turned in a pair of impressive starts in his last two outings, limiting the Angels and Giants to a combined two runs, six hits and three walks over 14.1 innings. The 25-year-old trimmed his ERA to 4.67 with a 1.38 WHIP and 64:29 K:BB through 90.2 innings over 17 starts. It remains to be seen if he can sustain his recent success, which he'll attempt to do in a projected home start versus the Mets next week.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Earns fourth win

Nelson (4-4) allowed one run on three hits and two walks over seven innings Sunday, striking out six and earning a win over the Giants. Nelson worked through five scoreless frames before the Giants finally broke through in the sixth inning. He completed more than six innings for the first time this year while forcing a season-best 13 whiffs. Nelson has allowed fewer than two runs in four of his last eight starts, posting a 3.80 ERA during that span. For the season, he lowered his ERA to 4.97 with a 58:28 K:BB through 83.1 frames. Nelson's next outing is projected to be a road matchup against the Angels.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: No-decision in Milwaukee

Nelson didn't factor in the decision Tuesday against the Brewers after he allowed three runs on six hits and no walks across five innings. He struck out six. The 25-year-old was in line for the victory when he exited after the fifth inning, but the bullpen fell apart in Milwaukee's four-run seventh. Nelson tied his season high with six strikeouts and didn't issue a walk for the fourth time in 15 starts this year. He has a 5.31 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 52:26 K:BB over 76.1 innings and tentatively lines up to make his next start this weekend in San Francisco.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Struggles against Atlanta

Nelson dropped to 2-3 in Saturday's 5-2 loss to Atlanta, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks with no strikeouts in 4.2 innings. Nelson's four walks matched his season high, and he needed 98 pitches (64 strikes) to get 14 outs. This was always going to be a tough matchup, and the silver lining is that he didn't get shelled. The 25-year-old is now at a 5.40 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 37:22 K:BB through 61.2 innings through 12 starts this season. Nelson is lined up for a more favorable road start in Detroit his next time out.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Picks up second win

Nelson (2-2) earned the win over Colorado on Monday, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one batter over five innings. Nelson was far from impressive Monday, as he struck out only one batter and notched just three whiffs. To his credit, he managed to hang around for five frames after giving up four runs over the first two innings, and an Arizona offensive surge put him in line for his first win in his last nine outings. Nelson had allowed just one run and four hits over his past 11.1 frames coming into the contest, but his overall 5.37 ERA on the campaign makes him a risky start in fantasy.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Shines with six strikeouts

Nelson did not factor into the decision Wednesday, as he did not surrender a run while allowing one hit and four walks over 5.1 innings in a 5-3 victory over the Athletics. He struck out six. Nelson delivered his best outing of the season Wednesday. He didn't allow a run for the first time this year, and he posted a season-high six strikeouts. He did run into some control problems in the sixth inning when he walked the bases loaded. Luis Frias came on in relief and recorded two outs to strand the bases loaded and preserve Nelson's ERA, which sits at 5.48 this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Roughed up by Rockies

Nelson (1-2) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk over four innings against Colorado. He struck out two. Nelson struggled with the conditions at Coors Field, giving up three extra-base hits in four innings of action including a three-run shot by C.J. Cron in the third inning. Considering Nelson has failed to eclipse four strikeouts in a start this season while also giving up five home runs in six starts, he remains an unsavory fantasy option. However, Nelson should have a better chance for success in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come against the Nationals.
