The righty threw 6.1 scoreless innings across two appearances for Cincinnati in 2022. His only lengthy MLB stint came in 2019 and went poorly with a 7.25 ERA, so it's unclear when Dowdy will get his first opportunity with Baltimore.

Dowdy looked sharp Thursday, striking out three over two scoreless innings in a win over the Angels. His fastball, which jumped up to 95 mph last year, worked well Thursday but more importantly, he threw nine breaking balls (eight for strikes). "I've been trying to fine tune some things," Dowdy said. "It was a lot sharper. And I think that's a good boost of confidence. I can't rely strictly on fastballs. The slider was effective." His role will evolve after the Volquez injury. The Rule 5 pick has had an awful spring, posting a 7.36 ERA and 3:6 K:BB through 7.1 innings, but the club has apparently still seen enough to keep Dowdy around rather than offer him back to Cleveland. The right-hander isn't yet assured of a bullpen spot, however.
