Winn (0-1) was charged with Friday's loss after giving up four runs on four hits over one-third of an inning against the Royals. Winn entered a 1-1 game to start the seventh inning and allowed four singles before his removal. The 24-year-old breezed through his introduction to MLB, throwing seven scoreless innings over five outings (zero hits, one walk, seven strikeouts) before facing his first adversity Friday. Texans general manager Chris Young raved about the right-hander to Kenndi Landry of MLB.com earlier this week, noting Winn was attacking the strike zone. Walks have been issue in the past for Winn, whose strikes may have caught too much of the zone Friday.... See More ... See Less

Rangers' Cole Winn: Gets call from Triple-A
The Rangers recalled Winn from Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday. Winn will give the Rangers a fresh arm in the bullpen for Sunday's series finale in Houston, but he may not stick around in the big leagues for long. He was added to the 26-man active roster as a replacement for Cody Bradford (back), who was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. The Rangers will replace Bradford in the rotation in the series opener in Detroit on Monday, when Michael Lorenzen (neck) will be brought back from the IL. Texas could end up sending Winn back to Round Rock to make room on the active roster for Lorenzen.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Cole Winn: On starter path
Winn allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out one over 1.2 innings in Monday's Cactus League start against the White Sox. Winn ran into early trouble in the form of a walk, a single and a wild pitch, giving up a run while struggling to control the count. He was pulled with two outs in his second frame after bumping up against a 40-pitch limit. A first-round pick in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, Winn's career stalled at Triple-A Round Rock the last two seasons to the extent the organization moved him to the bullpen. However, strong stint as a starter in the Puerto Rican Winter League put him back on a path to a rotation spot.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Cole Winn: Still overmatched at Triple-A
Winn has a 7.88 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in 16 innings for Triple-A Round Rock. The 23-year-old righty has averaged four innings per appearance while walking 13 and striking out 16. The results haven't matched Winn's prospect pedigree to date at Triple-A, where he has a 6.49 ERA and 1.74 WHIP in 145.2 career innings.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Cole Winn: Good to go
Winn (ankle) will make his next scheduled start Sunday at Salt Lake, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Winn was hit in the ankle by a comebacker in his previous start but escaped without serious injury. He'll return without missing a turn in the rotation and will look to build on his 2.20 ERA and 15:5 K:BB through his first four starts.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Cole Winn: Mixed results Tuesday in Triple-A
Winn struck out seven without a walk Tuesday for Triple-A Round Rock, but he only lasted 3.1 innings while allowing two runs on four hits. You'd like to see Winn pitching a bit deeper into games now that he's established in Triple-A, but he's only hit the five-inning mark once so far in four starts. Still, he's posted strong numbers across his 16.1 innings to this point -- a 2.20 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with a 15:5 K:BB. Last year's results -- a 2.41, 0.86 WHIP and 11.2 K/9 -- certainly earned the 2018 first-rounder plenty of attention, but he threw only 86 innings, so you have to imagine that the Rangers will watch his workload carefully. Based on the way he's been used so far, if he does reach the majors, he'll likely have trouble accumulating quality starts or wins in the near term, but he looks on pace to be a promising young arm for fantasy rosters in 2023.... Rangers' Cole Winn: Transferred to Triple-A
Winn was promoted to Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. Winn missed nearly a month in August and early September due to the COVID-19 outbreak at Double-A Frisco, but he returned to action Sept. 4 and tossed eight scoreless innings across his last three appearances. The right-hander will make his first Triple-A start Thursday against Tacoma.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Cole Winn: Back in action
Winn returned to Double-A Frisco's roster Saturday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports Winn hasn't pitched since mid-August due to the team's COVID-19 outbreak. He was putting up great numbers prior to his absence, striking out 33.1 percent of opposing batters over 16 starts en route to a 2.57 ERA and 0.83 WHIP.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Cole Winn: Sidelined due to contact tracing
Winn is in the league's COVID-19 contact tracing protocols, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Several players and staff members have been impacted by a recent COVID-19 outbreak at Double-A Frisco, and Winn will spend some time away from the team since he's considered a close contact. The right-hander has posted a 2.33 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 19.1 innings across his last five starts, but his return timetable depends on whether he tests positive for the virus.... See More ... Rangers' Cole Winn: Fans eight Friday
Winn allowed one hit and one walk while striking out eight over 5.1 scoreless innings for Double-A Frisco. Winn lowered his season ERA to 2.59, second in the Double-A Central league, to go along with an 11.2 K/9 rate. After a rocky introduction to professional baseball in 2019 and a missing year due to the pandemic, Winn has restored the luster of being a 2018 first-round draft pick. The right-hander, who pitched in the All-Star Futures game, has a 2.445 ERA and 0.80 WHIP over 66 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Cole Winn: Sparkling start continues
Winn allowed one hit, walked three and struck out seven over six scoreless innings for Double-A Frisco on Wednesday. Winn has held opponents scoreless in three of his five starts, and the 21-year-old right-hander sports a 1.63 ERA and 0.72 WHIP thus far for the Rough Riders. Winn has undershot expectations since joining the Rangers, but his start in 2021 is a promising sign that he'll deliver on the potential of being a 15th-overall pick in 2018.... See More ... Rangers' Cole Winn: Debut scheduled
Winn will make his professional debut Thursday for Low-A Hickory, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. Winn, the Rangers' No. 1 pick in 2018, had stayed back in extended spring training and is skipping short-season rookie leagues entirely.... See More ... See Less
