  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Not in major-league camp

Vavra (shoulder) is on a throwing progression at the Orioles' minor-league complex and won't begin spring training at major-league camp, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Vavra's target date for game action is mid-March, and it's possible he could be invited to major-league camp at that time. That said, the utility player faces an uphill battle to begin the year with the Orioles given the team's depth. It's more likely he starts at Triple-A Norfolk once he completes his recovery from a right shoulder strain that cost him the second half of 2023.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Outrighted to Triple-A

Vavra (shoulder) cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.

The Orioles needed to clear space on their 40-man roster ahead of Tuesday's Rule 5 Draft protection deadline and Vavra is one of the victims. He'll remain in the organization, but it's unclear what his health situation is after he ended the season with right shoulder issues.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Goes on 60-day IL

The Orioles recalled Vavra from Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a strained right shoulder.

Vavra has resided on Norfolk's IL since mid-June due to the shoulder injury, but he was cleared to begin a rehab assignment at Single-A Delmarva on Aug. 31. However, he appeared in just two games for the affiliate before being pulled off the rehab assignment after experiencing a setback with the shoulder. The Orioles haven't revealed whether or not Vavra's injury is season-ending, but he's not expected to see any action with the big club again in 2023 even if his setback proves to be a minor one. The Orioles moved him to the 60-day IL in the big leagues for the purpose of opening up a spot on the 40-man roster for first baseman/outfielder Heston Kjerstad, whose contract was selected from Triple-A.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Pulled off minor league rehab

Vavra has been pulled off a minor-league rehab assignment in order to undergo further testing and evaluation of his right shoulder injury, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Vavra made it through just two rehab games before the assignment was halted due to continued discomfort. He's been on the injured list at Triple-A Norfolk since mid-June with what has been referred to as a right shoulder strain, but the Orioles want to see if something more serious might be going on with the shoulder.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Lands on minor-league IL

Vavra (shoulder) was placed on Triple-A Norfolk's 7-day injured list Friday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Vavra suffered a right shoulder strain and will be sidelined at least a week. His injury leaves the Orioles with one less option available should they need an extra position player in the majors. • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Hits bench versus lefty

Vavra is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees.

With southpaw Nestor Cortes on the hill for New York, the lefty-hitting Vavra will head to the bench while Anthony Santander steps in as Baltimore's right fielder. Vavra had picked up starts at either corner-outfield spot in five of the past eight games while going 5-for-16 with four RBI, three runs and a stolen base.

Vavra is starting in right field and batting eighth for the Orioles in Tuesday's game versus the Yankees, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Vavra went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Angels.

Vavra is getting a bit of run in the corner outfield, and he's gone 2-for-8 with one RBI, a walk and two runs scored over his last three games. The utility man is slashing a modest .242/.342/.242, as all eight of his hits this season have been singles. He's unlikely to bat higher than the bottom third of the order if he can maintain his newfound playing time.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Nabs third straight start

Vavra will start in right field and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Angels.

With Ramon Urias (hamstring) recently landing on the injured list and with Kyle Stowers having been demoted to Triple-A Norfolk, Vavra appears to have settled into the open spot in the Baltimore lineup. He'll be making his third consecutive start Wednesday, all of which have come in the corner outfield. The lefty-hitting Vavra could still find himself out of the lineup versus southpaws.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Starting in right field

Vavra is starting in right field and batting eighth for the Orioles in Monday's game versus the Angels, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

With Kyle Stowers optioned and Anthony Santander spending a large chunk of his time at designated hitter, there are some at-bats to be had in right field for the O's. Vavra hasn't done much at the plate during his opportunities this season, picking up six hits -- all singles -- in 26 at-bats.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Called up Tuesday

Vavra was called up from Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday.

Over nine games in Triple-A, Vavra produced a .286 average with four doubles, five RBI, eight runs scored and a stolen base over 42 at-bats. He did strike out at least once in every contest though, going down on strikes 11 times over those nine contests. In the big leagues, he'll help replace Ramon Urias (hamstring), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Making strong impression

Vavra is hitting .342 (13-for-38) over 13 Grapefruit League games.

Vavra is in contention to open the season as a utility man for the Orioles. He's done about all he can to prove he's ready for the role in spring training, but it's unclear if he'll break camp with the team. With starting roles around the diamond pretty well defined, Vavra is unlikely to be more than a bench bat if he makes the team, so it's possible the Orioles will want the 25-year-old to log more consistent playing time with Triple-A Norfolk.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Will be in Friday's lineup

Vavra (shoulder) will return to the Orioles' Grapefruit League lineup Friday versus the Twins, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: Swinging again

Vavra (shoulder) said he will resume swinging a bat Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Vavra noted that he feels much better since experiencing left shoulder discomfort late last week, and his ability to swing the bat again should represent an important test as he aims to return to the Grapefruit League lineup. If all goes well during his workout Tuesday, Vavra could be cleared for game action within the next couple of days.

Vavra said Sunday that his injured shoulder is feeling better and that he "should not be out long," Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Vavra was scratched from the lineup for Saturday's spring game, and he remains out of the lineup for Sunday's exhibition contest. However, it does not appear he is dealing with an issue that will put his availability for Opening Day in question.

  • Orioles' Terrin Vavra: In mix for reps at first base

Vavra is being considered for the backup role at first base, Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Vavra is far from alone in the competition to be Ryan Mountcastle's understudy at first. The group also includes Anthony Santander, Franchy Cordero and James McCann. There doesn't appear to be a clear path to playing time for Vavra, who has seen at least some time at every position excluding first and catcher over the last two years. He's most likely to be a utility man if he breaks camp with the Orioles.
