White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Undergoes shoulder surgery
Gonzalez underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder in mid-July, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.
This news was just revealed by the White Sox on Friday, and it helps to explain why Gonzalez was transferred to the 60-day IL just before the All-Star break. The 26-year-old right-hander is aiming to be ready for the start of spring training in 2024.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Shifts to 60-day IL
The White Sox transferred Gonzalez (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday.
Though Gonzalez was officially diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation upon landing on the 10-day IL on June 19, he'll wind up missing at least two months -- well beyond the timeline typically associated with the injury. With Gonzalez on the shelf until at least the second half of August, Zach Remillard may have some staying power on the White Sox's 26-man active roster as a utility infielder.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Heads to IL with sore shoulder
Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with right shoulder inflammation, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Gonzalez has dealt with the injury for nearly a week and the White Sox finally decided to put him on the IL. He'll be eligible to return on June 28, although it's unclear at this time whether he will be ready by then. Zach Remillard is starting at second base Monday and the White Sox also called up Jose Rodriguez.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Limited by sore shoudler
Manager Pedro Grifol said Saturday that Gonzalez is limited by a sore right shoulder, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Gonzalez hasn't started since Tuesday and hasn't appeared off the bench since Wednesday, though his .194/.208/.376 season slash line means there's no guarantee he'd be playing even if healthy. He'll be evaluated when the team gets back to Chicago on Monday, which means it's unlikely he appears in Sunday's series finale against Seattle.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Steal, run scored off bench
Gonzalez logged a stolen base and a run scored as a pinch runner in Wednesday's 8-4 win over the Dodgers.
Gonzalez ran for Eloy Jimenez in the ninth inning as the White Sox rallied for a three-run frame. Over nine contests in June, Gonzalez has gone 3-for-22 with four steals, two RBI and three runs scored. His cold bat could lead to more opportunities for Elvis Andrus at second base. For the season, Gonzalez owns a .194/.208/.376 slash line with seven steals, three home runs, 14 RBI and 11 runs scored over 97 plate appearances.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Sitting out vs. Dodgers
Gonzalez is out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Dodgers.
Gonzalez gets a breather after going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers. Elvis Andrus gets the start at second base and will hit ninth in Gonzalez's place.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Pair of RBI in return to lineup
Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI on Sunday against the Marlins.
Gonzalez was back in the lineup after a two-game absence, with Elvis Andrus starting in his place. He delivered a two-RBI double in the sixth inning, only his third hit across 19 at-bats through seven games in June. Gonzalez may find it difficult to earn playing time moving forward so long as Andrus, Tim Anderson and Yoan Moncada remain healthy.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Sits for second straight
Gonzalez will be on the bench Saturday against Miami.
Gonzalez had been settling in as the White Sox's primary second baseman, starting 14 of 16 games at the keystone even with Elvis Andrus back from his oblique injury for the last six games of that stretch. Gonzalez has hit just .198/.213/.384 through 39 games this season, however, so it's perhaps no surprise that he's been back on the bench for the last two games. That said, Andrus is hitting just .200/.278/.248 himself, so he hasn't deserved everyday at-bats either.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Nabs two thefts Thursday
Gonzalez went 0-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases in the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Yankees.
It wasn't a successful day at the plate for Gonzalez, who also went 0-for-3 in the nightcap to finish at 0-for-6 overall. However, he redeemed himself from a fantasy perspective with two thefts in the opener to bring his total to six on the season. Four of the steals have come since May 30, a stretch during which he has started seven of Chicago's eight games.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Another start at second base
Gonzalez is starting at second base and batting eighth Thursday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees.
Elvis Andrus returned from the injured list on June 2, but it's been Gonzalez at second base for four of five games since then. Andrus has made just two starts during that span, with one of them coming at third base. Gonzalez has been all-or-nothing at the plate, but he does have an .874 OPS since May 1 thanks in large part to a three-game homer streak last month.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Maintains home run streak
Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, one double, an additional RBI, an additional run scored and one steal in Tuesday's 7-3 victory over the Angels.
Gonzalez continued his tear at the plate, swatting his third home run in as many games while also swiping his third bag of the season. Since being activated from the IL on May 13, Gonzalez owns a .323 average with three homers, 11 RBI and six runs scored. Though his recent play has been quite encouraging, Gonzalez will likely return to a backup role upon the return of Elvis Andrus (oblique), which is expected to come later this week.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Homers in second straight game
Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 6-4 loss to the Angels.
After going without a home run in his first 58 plate appearances of the season, Gonzalez has now popped solo blasts in both of the White Sox's past two games. He appears to have supplanted Hanser Alberto as Chicago's preferred second baseman for the time being, but both Gonzalez and Alberto will see their opportunities take a hit when Elvis Andrus (oblique) likely returns from the 10-day injured list later this week.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Gaining traction at second base
Gonzalez will start at second base and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Tigers.
Gonzalez will man the keystone for the sixth time in seven games and may have emerged as the primary replacement at the position while Elvis Andrus (oblique) is on the shelf. Hanser Alberto had missed a good chunk of those games while missing a shoulder injury of his own, but since he returned to action Friday, he didn't play second base Saturday and won't on Sunday either. After sitting out Saturday's game entirely, Alberto will be filling in for a resting Yoan Moncada at third base in the series finale.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Making most of playing time
Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored Wednesday against the Guardians.
Gonzalez has started each of the White Sox's last four games with Hanser Alberto (shoulder) sidelined and Elvis Andrus (oblique) on the injured list. He's collected five hits across 15 at-bats in that span, tallying six RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. For the season, Gonzalez is still hitting just .200, and he's almost certain to lose playing time when either Alberto or Andrus return.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Gets fourth straight start
Gonzalez will start at second base and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Guardians.
Gonzalez will pick up a fourth consecutive start, including his third straight at the keystone while Hanser Alberto (shoulder) has been banged up. The White Sox haven't revealed whether Alberto will require a trip to the 10-day injured list, but even if that's the case, Gonzalez may not be in store for a long-term run as an everyday player. Elvis Andrus (oblique) is expected to head out on a rehab assignment next week and could be ready to return from the IL within the first week of June to reclaim duties as Chicago's primary second baseman.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Steals second bag
Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, one run scored and one steal in Sunday's 5-2 victory over the Royals.
Gonzalez drew the start at shortstop for the White Sox on Sunday and collected a trio of hits. His performance was highlighted by a two-RBI triple in the fifth inning off Max Castillo that plated Gavin Sheets and Clint Frazier to give Chicago the lead. Sunday's outing was Gonzalez's first multi-hit performance in 2023, while his stolen base was his first since April 9. Though Gonzalez may have earned himself some more opportunities moving forward after Sunday's contest, he shouldn't be considered in most formats given his .195/.190/.293 slash line this season.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Activated Saturday
Gonzalez (shoulder) was activated from the 10-day injured list Saturday.
Elvis Andrus was placed on the IL with an oblique strain, so there could be at-bats available at the keystone over the next couple weeks. However, Hanser Alberto is starting over Gonzalez on Saturday.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Placed on 10-day IL
Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to May 1, with right shoulder inflammation.
Gonzalez will miss at least the next nine days while recovering from what sounds like a minor shoulder issue. The 26-year-old utilityman had gone just 5-for-36 (.139) with a .333 OPS through 21 games this season with Chicago.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Swipes first bag
Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a stolen base Sunday against the Pirates.
Gonzalez started against a right-handed pitcher for the first time this season while stepping into the lineup for Luis Robert to get a day of rest. He reached base on a single in the fifth inning and then swiped second base for his first stolen base of the season. Gonzalez has three hits in 13 at-bats this season, but he's not getting consistent playing time.

White Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Starts against lefty
Gonzalez went 1-for-2 in Thursday's win over the Astros.
Gonzalez started in right field and hit ninth, earning the start over Oscar Colas. That's likely only because lefty Framber Valdez was on the mound for Houston, as Colas is expected to see the majority of playing time at the position. Gonzalez earned 109 plate appearances in the majors in 2022 and posted a .238/.257/.352 line.
