Jake McCarthy entered the 2023 season with plenty of fantasy buzz after finishing the previous year with a flourish. Unfortunately, he found himself back in the minors before the end of April following a slow start. He returned after a month on the farm and hit .311 with 15 stolen bases during a 31-game stretch, but that surge in production wound up being short-lived. McCarthy hardly played in the final two months of the season and was removed from the Diamondbacks' Wild Card Series roster due to an oblique injury. The 26-year-old has been an elite base stealer with 49 swipes since 2022 as a semi-regular. His quality of contact (23.7 percent hard-hit rate in 2023) has been woeful, though, and he hasn't graded out well defensively, so getting enough consistent playing time to take advantage of those wheels is a legitimate question. Arizona re-signed Lourdes Gurriel, which could push McCarthy to a reserve role.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Plates three, swipes bag

McCarthy went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a stolen base during Sunday's 12-5 win over the White Sox. McCarthy was productive despite generating only one hit. He stole second after walking in the first inning, scored Joc Pederson on a fielder's choice in the third frame and plated Pederson again in the fourth on a sacrifice fly before hitting an RBI triple in the sixth. McCarthy's pilfer was his 10th of the campaign, and his fifth of June. He's slashing .279/.365/.409 through 180 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Absent from starting nine

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox. Despite the fact that right-hander Chris Flexen is starting for Chicago, McCarthy will give way to Randal Grichuk in right field. McCarthy had started five of the D-Backs' previous six games, so it's likely Friday's absence is nothing more than a rest day.

McCarthy isn't in the Diamondbacks' lineup Tuesday against the Angels. With southpaw Jose Suarez slated to start on the mound for the Angels, the lefty-hitting McCarthy will step out of the lineup. Randal Grichuk will fill the open spot in right field while batting fifth.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Two steals in win

McCarthy went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored in a 10-5 win over the Mets on Saturday. McCarthy singled, stole two bases and scored on a Christian Walker grand slam in the third inning, and he later singled and scored in the eighth. McCarthy was a late addition to the lineup after Lourdes Gurriel (undisclosed) was scratched and made the most of a rare opportunity to face a left-handed starter. Since May 21, McCarthy has started only six of a possible 10 games but has tallied four steals during that stretch.

The outfielder is 13-for-46 (.282) over 20 games in May, putting him right in line with his .284/.358/.404 slash line for the season.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Taking seat Wednesday

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. McCarthy maintains a .369 on-base percentage over 86 plate appearances this season and has seemingly moved into an everyday role in the outfield while Alek Thomas (hamstring) is on the shelf, but the 26-year-old McCarthy will hit the bench Wednesday. The Diamondbacks haven't indicated that the lefty-hitting McCarthy is dealing with an injury, but he was lifted for a pinch hitter in Tuesday's 6-2 win and is now on the bench Wednesday while the Reds bring a right-hander (Graham Ashcraft) to the hill. Pavin Smith will replace McCarthy in the Arizona outfield.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Three hits Sunday

McCarthy went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored in Sunday's 11-4 win over the Padres. McCarthy had an RBI double and two singles on the evening and came around to score all three times he reached base. In 11 games since April 19, McCarthy is slashing .371/.452/.457 and has consistently been hitting leadoff for the Diamondbacks. Things may get a bit murky with Alek Thomas (hamstring) set to return to the big club this week, as it's currently unclear how manager Torey Lovullo plans to split up playing time between the two once Thomas is officially back in the fold.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Back in lineup

McCarthy started in right field, batted leadoff and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple and an RBI in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the Mariners. McCarthy was back in the starting lineup after sitting out the previous two games and tripled home the Diamondbacks' lone run in the eighth inning. This was his first time batting atop the order, as primary leadoff hitter Ketel Marte was moved to third. With the triple, McCarthy extended his hit streak to six games, and he has gone 8-for-18 with three walks, two RBI and four runs over that period.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Swipes first bag of season

McCarthy went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Cardinals. McCarthy was involved in a five-run fifth inning for the Diamondbacks, doubling home Joc Pederson before eventually scoring on a base hit from Corbin Carroll. McCarthy wound up reaching on a two-out base knock the following frame and stole second before the inning concluded for his first theft of the year. The 26-year-old is known for his elite base stealing, so it was encouraging to finally see him active on the basepaths after tallying 49 steals in 198 games over the last two seasons. McCarthy is now slashing .276/.300/.379 with four RBI, four runs and a 1:9 BB:K in 30 plate appearances this year.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Sits versus lefty

McCarthy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies. Arizona is facing a left-handed starting pitcher (Austin Gomber) for the sixth time in eight games, so the lefty-hitting McCarthy once again finds himself on the bench. McCarthy and the right-handed-hitting Randal Grichuk are expected to form a platoon in right field until Arizona gets Alek Thomas (hamstring) back from the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Held out of starting lineup

McCarthy served as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-1 in Sunday's 5-2 loss to Atlanta. McCarthy had started recently against left-handers, but he was held out Sunday against Atlanta's Chris Sale. That's because the righty-hitting Randal Grichuk was activated from the injured list Friday, and he'll get starts against lefties. Expect McCarthy and Grichuk to platoon in right field until Alek Thomas (hamstring) is ready to return. At that point, Grichuk will likely platoon with Thomas, squeezing McCarthy's playing time.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Two hits, two RBI in loss

McCarthy started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 9-8 loss to Atlanta. McCarthy got the start against a lefty and delivered early with an RBI single in the first inning when the Diamondbacks plated six runs. He later delivered another run with a double. Now that Randal Grichuk is off the injured list, McCarthy's opportunities against left-handers may dry up. Grichuk made his season debut Saturday but served as the designated hitter in what was likely a soft re-entry before he gets work in the field. At some point, Alek Thomas (hamstring) will return, which will also cut into McCarthy's playing time.
