Whether Prielipp will require Tommy John surgery or something less invasive like an internal brace procedure won't be known until he's on the table. The left-hander already had Tommy John surgery in 2021 while in college at Alabama and had made two rehab starts recently -- his only two appearances thus far in pro ball -- before being shut down.

Prielipp was working his way back from Tommy John surgery in 2021, but he landed on the 7-day injured list April 14 with general left elbow soreness. He then made a rehab start in the Florida Complex League on June 9 and didn't make a second start. It sounds like he's had a significant setback, but there are not full details on the surgery.

The talented lefty gave up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four in 2.2 innings, but it's possible his elbow didn't respond well, given that he hasn't pitched in 11 days since. The Twins don't want to rush Prielipp back as he gets symptomatic treatment for general elbow soreness, according to president of baseball operations Derek Falvey, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
We can't really downplay any elbow issue with a pitcher, especially one like Prielipp who recently returned from Tommy John surgery. However, as Falvey notes, Prielipp's fastball/slider combination was outstanding in camp prior to him getting shut down, so there is enough upside here to be patient in deeper dynasty leagues unless the diagnosis worsens.

The 48th overall pick in last year's draft, Prielipp made his first pro start April 8, giving up three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three in four innings. He had Tommy John surgery in 2021 and threw only 28 innings during his time at Alabama.
