Top Junior Caminero News

  • Rays' Junior Caminero: Not in Game 1 lineup

Caminero is not in the lineup for Tuesday's Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Rangers.

Caminero did make the Rays' roster, but he will not be in the lineup for the series opener after starting the final seven regular-season games. Tampa Bay is going with Taylor Walls at shortstop and Curtis Mead at second base Tuesday.

  • Rays' Junior Caminero: Hits first major-league home run

Caminero went 2-for-6 with a solo homer, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 12-8 win over the Blue Jays.

Caminero got an RBI single in the second and then launched an opposite field home run off Tim Mayza in the fifth for his first big-league blast. The 20-year-old phenom slashed .235/.278/.353 with seven RBI, four runs and a 2:8 BB:K in 36 plate appearances after he was called up. He should be in the mix to make the postseason roster for the Rays.

  • Rays' Junior Caminero: Eventful big-league debut

Caminero went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in Saturday's 7-6 win over the Blue Jays.

Making his MLB debut after having just turned 20 years old in July, Caminero collected his first career hit in the third inning, a line-drive single to left field that left his bat with an exit velocity of 112 mph. The Rays' top prospect was then a key figure in his team's comeback rally in the ninth, beating out a potential inning-ending double-play grounder to set the stage for Josh Lowe's walkoff hit. Caminero slashed .342/.404/.747 over his final 20 games with Double-A Montgomery prior to his promotion, and he seems to have carried that confidence with him to the majors. With Tampa Bay having clinched a playoff spot with Saturday's victory, he could see regular action over the final week of the regular season and potentially even find his way onto the postseason roster if he keeps raking.

  • Rays' Junior Caminero: Debuting as designated hitter

Caminero will bat fifth and serve as the designated hitter in his major-league debut Saturday against the Blue Jays, Steve Carney of StPeteNine.com reports.

Caminero was called up straight from Double-A on Friday and spent his first day on the roster watching from the bench. Whether that was a sign that we shouldn't expect to see him too often over the remainder of the season or merely an attempt to ease his transition to the highest level is not yet clear. The latter would seem to be more likely given that the Rays are confident installing him right in the middle of the order in his debut.

  • Rays' Junior Caminero: Not in Friday's lineup

Caminero is not in the lineup for Friday's contest versus the Blue Jays, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

Caminero was promoted from Double-A Montgomery to the big leagues Friday, but he will have to wait to make his first start. Being on the bench wouldn't seem to be a great sign for his playing time outlook down the stretch, although Tampa Bay could just want to give the top prospect a day to settle in. Curtis Mead is at third base Friday and Osleivis Basabe is handling shortstop.

  • Rays' Junior Caminero: Promotion made official

The Rays selected Caminero's contract from Double-A Montgomery on Friday, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

One of the top prospects in all of baseball, Caminero will skip the Triple-A level and report to the big leagues after turning 20 in July. He earned the promotion by slashing .324/.384/.591 with 31 home runs and 94 RBI between High-A Bowling Green and Montgomery, with 20 of those homers coming at the Double-A level. While primarily a third baseman, Caminero has experience at all four infield positions and could potentially take over at shortstop for the Rays.

  • Rays' Junior Caminero: Making jump to majors

Caminero was promoted to the majors from Double-A Montgomery on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Caminero is widely regarded as not only the Rays' best prospect, but also one of the best across the league. He'll make the jump directly from Montgomery after maintaining a .309/.373/.548 line at the level across 351 plate appearances -- good for a 140 wRC+. The 20-year-old has played primarily at third base this season, but he has also made 29 appearances at shortstop. If he gets regular playing time in the majors, it's likely to come at the latter position at the expense of Osleivis Basabe or Taylor Walls.

  • Rays' Junior Caminero: Three-homer game at Double-A

Caminero hit three home runs, including one that traveled 472 feet, in one half of Double-A Montgomery's doubleheader Saturday against Birmingham.

One of the game's very best prospects, Caminero's power has come in bunches recently, as he also had a two-homer day Aug. 5 and his next most recent Double-A homer came back on July 2, just before his 20th birthday. All told, his .302/.361/.488 slash line and 122 wRC+ as one of the youngest players at Double-A is very impressive. Caminero's 18.9 percent strikeout rate and 8.4 percent walk rate are improvements over the 25.2 percent strikeout rate and 6.3 percent walk rate he logged earlier this year with High-A Bowling Green.

  • Rays' Junior Caminero: Already dialed in at Double-A

Caminero is hitting .306 with two home runs and a 19.6 percent strikeout rate in 13 games with Double-A Montgomery.

The 19-year-old hitting savant hardly skipped a beat after getting promoted from High-A Bowling Green in late March. Caminero has been particularly dialed in over his last 10 games, slashing .371/.429/.571 with a pair of home runs. He has established himself as one of the game's elite offensive prospects for dynasty leagues.
