  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Rebounds with quality start

Abbott (8-1) picked up the win Wednesday against the Marlins, allowing one run on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over 7.2 innings. Abbott was pulled in the fourth inning of his previous start after allowing four earned runs. The 26-year-old bounced back Wednesday by firing seven scoreless innings before Heriberto Hernandez broke the shutout with an RBI single during the eighth frame. The outing marked Abbott's sixth quality start of the campaign and snapped a streak of three consecutive appearances with fewer than five Ks. He'll take a 2.07 ERA and an 83:24 K:BB over 91.1 innings into his next start, which won't come until after the All-Star break.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Rolls through Cardinals

Abbott (7-1) yielded a run on three hits over seven innings Sunday, striking out three and earning a win over St. Louis. Abbott coughed up a run in the second inning before retiring the final 18 batters he faced in a dominant performance. He's given up one or zero earned runs in 12 of his 14 starts this season, but he was tagged with a combined nine runs in the other two. With Sunday's 100-pitch performance, he dropped his season ERA to 1.79 with a 72:20 K:BB across 75.1 frames. Abbott is 5-1 with a 1.59 ERA over his last seven outings. He's in line for a home matchup against San Diego next weekend.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Fires shutout in Cleveland

Abbott (6-1) picked up the win in Tuesday's 1-0 victory over the Guardians, scattering three hits and a walk over nine scoreless innings. He struck out five. Gabriel Arias got to third base in the second inning after a double and a stolen base, but that was as close as Cleveland got to producing any offense against Abbott. It was the first career shutout for the southpaw, who generated 31 called or swinging strikes among his season-high 110 pitches (77 total strikes), and it continued a dazzling stretch in which he's held the opposition without an earned run in five of eight outings since the beginning of May. Abbott sports a 1.32 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 44:12 K:BB over 47.2 innings during that span, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Twins.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Saddled with first loss

Abbott (5-1) took the loss Wednesday, coughing up five runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings as the Reds were routed 9-1 by the Brewers. He struck out six. The southpaw was very sharp for the most part, generating 36 called or swinging strikes among his 100 pitches (72 total strikes), but a couple offerings caught too much of the plate and got turned into two-run homers by Jackson Chourio in the fifth inning and Daz Cameron in the sixth. It's the first time this season Abbott has served up multiple home runs in a start, and despite the setback he'll take a 2.18 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 59:19 K:BB through 53.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road early next week in Cleveland.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Dominant in third straight win

Abbott (5-0) earned the win against the Cubs on Friday, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out eight over seven scoreless innings. Abbott generated 12 whiffs on 93 pitches and retired the final 15 batters he faced, completing seven innings for the first time this season. It was an especially impressive effort considering he just limited the vaunted Cubs lineup to one run Saturday. The southpaw improved to 5-0 on the year and has now yielded only eight earned runs across nine starts. He'll carry a 1.51 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 53:18 K:BB across 47.2 innings into a home matchup with the Brewers next week.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Improves to 4-0

Abbott (4-0) earned the win against the Cubs on Saturday, allowing one run on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Abbott allowed a solo homer in the third inning but otherwise kept the Cubs in check despite inducing just five whiffs on 83 pitches. The southpaw has now given up more than one earned run only once in eight starts this year and has completed at least five frames six times. He'll take a stellar 1.77 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 45:17 K:BB over 40.2 innings into a road rematch with the Cubs next weekend.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Posts five scoreless frames

Abbott tossed five scoreless innings while allowing four hits and no walks Tuesday against Atlanta. He struck out eight and did not factor into the decision. Abbott was excellent once again and continued what's been a strong start to his delayed debut this season. Outside of a poor start in Colorado, Abbott has only allowed two earned runs in 20 innings, and Tuesday was his first outing of the season with no walks. He now sits at a 2.25 ERA and 1.17 WHIP through five starts and will aim to keep rolling this weekend against the Astros.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Walks four in no-decision

Abbott didn't factor in the decision Thursday against the Cardinals after allowing a run on three hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out three. The lone tally against him came during the third inning as St. Louis scored on two singles, an error, a walk and a wild pitch. Abbott was unable to stick around long enough to qualify for the victory thanks to an extended rain delay. It's the second straight start in which the left-hander has walked at least four batters, which is a major jump compared to the three free passes he issued in his first two outings of the season. Abbott's overall numbers this year are still good with a 3.32 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 23:12 K:BB across 19 innings.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Coughs up four runs

Abbott did not factor into the decision in Friday's 8-7 win over the Rockies. He allowed four runs on five hits and five walks while striking out four over four innings. Abbott entered Friday's game having given up just two earned runs over his first 11 big-league innings this season. He started out nicely by retiring the side in the first, but he gave up a run on a bases-loaded walk in the second inning before yielding three more runs in the third, including a Jordan Beck solo homer. Abbott didn't make it into the fifth inning despite tossing 83 pitches (45 strikes) while generating eight whiffs. He's slated to make his next start at home against the Cardinals next week.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Activated off IL

The Reds activated Abbott (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Saturday. Abbott began the season on the injured list due to a rotator cuff strain in his left shoulder that put an early end to his 2024 campaign. He made two rehab starts with Triple-A Louisville and has progressed enough in his throwing program to make his 2025 regular-season debut Saturday against the Pirates. Will Benson was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Abbott on the 26-man roster.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Make second rehab start

Abbott (shoulder) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings for Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. Abbott made his second rehab start and reached 92 pitches on the day. The left-hander will work a side bullpen session Tuesday, per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, and the Reds will need to make a decision on whether to give him another rehab start or activate him. Abbott, who was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to March 24, is eligible to return April 9.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Set for rehab assignment

Abbott (shoulder) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Abbott is expected to make two starts with Louisville, the first of which will be Tuesday, while the latter is set for April 6. The right-hander will then be re-evaluated for a potential return to the major-league roster after his second rehab outing. If all goes to plan, Abbott is roughly on track to be back in the Cincinnati rotation April 12.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Shelved to begin season

The Reds placed Abbott (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday. Abbott built up to four innings and 50 pitches in his second and final Cactus League outing this past Saturday, but since he's not quite stretched out enough to handle a typical starter's workload, the Reds will have him open the season on the IL after he got off to a delayed start this spring due to a rotator cuff strain. He'll be eligible for activation April 8, and he should be ready to go on or around that date if he experiences no setbacks while making another rehab start or two over the next couple weeks. Carson Spiers appears in line to serve as the Reds' No. 5 starter until Abbott is cleared to join the big-league rotation.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Throws four scoreless innings

Abbott (shoulder) allowed one hit and struck out three over four scoreless innings in Saturday's spring start against the Padres. Abbott made his second Cactus League start and was impressive against a star-studded San Diego lineup. The left-hander was brought along slowly during spring training as a precaution, as Abbott missed the final six weeks of the 2024 regular season with a shoulder injury that persisted over the winter. As such, he'll open the season on the injured list, and it's not yet clear how much time Abbott will need to get ready to rejoin the rotation. He worked his pitch count up to 50 on Saturday, which means at least one more outing.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Headed to injured list

Abbott (shoulder) will begin the season on the injured list, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Abbott was able to make his spring debut Monday after spending most of camp working through the same shoulder issue that put an early end to his 2024 campaign. He was able to go three innings during his first spring start, but the Reds will send him to the 15-day IL at the start of the season to ensure he has enough time to build up his workload -- ideally to around five frames. While Abbott is out, Carson Spiers will serve as the fifth member of Cincinnati's rotation.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Favorite to win fifth starter job

Abbott appears to be the favorite to win the Reds' fifth starter job, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. The southpaw has yet to in a major-league spring training game this season, but the Reds won't need a fifth starter right away so Abbott's incumbency advantage still weighs heavily. That said, his edge is pretty precarious. "If there's a hiccup -- even not just him but weather-wise -- it could derail that first day," manager Terry Francona said. Graham Ashcraft and Carson Spiers are also still vying for the job.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Completes first live session of camp

Abbott (shoulder) expressed optimism Sunday that he'll be ready for Opening Day after he recently tossed his first live batting practice session of the spring, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "Big step, big checkmark," Abbott said. "I feel really confident where we are." Just two days earlier, manager Terry Francona suggested that Abbott's availability for Opening Day was more of a question mark, but the southpaw's ability to face hitters is a big step in a positive direction. Abbott is likely to throw live BP sessions on at least a couple more occasions before the Reds include him in the Cactus League pitching schedule. He should still have enough time to get stretched out for starting duty before the Reds open their season March 27, but any minor snags in the buildup process would likely make him a candidate for a stint on the injured list.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Overcomes illness

Abbott (shoulder) returned to camp Sunday after being away for two days due to illness, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Abbott is not yet scheduled to face hitters in a live batting practice session. The Reds will check in with the left-hander to determine the impact of the last two days of inactivity, then make decisions on the next steps of Abbott's progression.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Likely for bulk innings Friday

Abbott won't start Friday against the Pirates but could be available in bulk relief, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Abbott was originally listed as the probable pitcher for Friday's game, but the Reds have since named Buck Farmer as the official starter. Farmer hasn't completed more than two innings in any appearance this season, so he'll presumably be in store for an abbreviated outing before Abbott likely enters the game and covers several frames.

  • Reds' Andrew Abbott: Saddled with 10th loss

Abbott (10-10) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk over five innings against the Royals. He struck out four. Abbott didn't pitch particularly poorly but was mainly done in by the ninth spot in the order, with Dairon Blanco leading off the third with a bunt single and a stolen base that eventually led to the initial run, then a homer by Blanco in the fifth that pushed the deficit to three. An additional run scored on a sac fly, and Abbott's outing was over after five innings. Sunday marked the eighth consecutive outing for Abbott in which he's alternated allowing two runs or less followed immediately by four runs or more. It was also his fourth loss in five decisions after winning eight of his previous 10. If the trend holds, Abbott would notch a quality start during his next outing, and the matchup seems to fall in line with that possibility as he's next slated for a road matchup against the punchless Pirates.
