Abbott (8-6) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings against Cleveland. He struck out one and did not walk a batter. Abbot ran into trouble early on after surrendering a leadoff double to Ramon Laureano to open the second. The lefty allowed five consecutive hits to start the frame and then gave up hits to two of the first three batters he faced in the third before being relieved by Daniel Duarte. Abbot has now failed to make it through five innings in four consecutive starts while his one strikeout Wednesday marked a season low. He's also lost his last three decisions and now holds a 6.10 ERA in September.... See More ... See Less

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Fans seven in no-decision
Abbott (8-5) did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 4.1 innings in a 7-5 loss against the Pirates. He struck out seven. Abbott mostly cruised through the first three innings before serving up a solo homer to Ke'Bryan Hayes in the top of the fourth and an additional solo shot to Henry Davis in the top of the fifth. The rookie left-hander still managed to generate a lot of whiffs and will carry a respectable 3.70 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 119:44 K:BB into his final regular-season start next week at Cleveland.... Reds' Andrew Abbott: Early exit in no-decision
Abbott came away with a no-decision Saturday in the Reds' 3-2 win over the Mets, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out five. The rookie southpaw tossed an inefficient 91 pitches (54 strikes) before getting the hook after serving up a pair of doubles in the bottom of the fourth inning, missing out on his ninth win of the season in the process. Abbott has failed to complete more than four innings in four of his last five starts, stumbling to a 6.33 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB through 21.1 innings over that stretch, but the Reds don't have any better rotation options as they try to hang onto a wild-card spot in the NL. He lines up to take the mound next at home against the Pirates next weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Andrew Abbott: Will start against Mets
Abbott's next start will come during the series against the Mets that opens Friday in New York, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Reds manager David Bell said that Abbott will start Friday or Saturday. Bell is trying to manage Abbott's workload. The rookie left-hander blew past his previous career high in innings (118.0) in early August and is up to 153 in 2023. The workload appears to be affecting Abbott's performance, as the 24-year-old has a 6.51 ERA with 42 hits and 20 walks allowed over his last 37.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Andrew Abbott: Yields six runs in loss
Abbott (8-5) took the loss Friday, allowing six runs on four hits and three walks over four innings against St. Louis. He struck out three. After a stellar 1.90 ERA and 66:19 K:BB in 61.2 innings over his first 10 starts, Abbott has struggled mightily of late. The 24-year-old rookie sports a 6.51 ERA with 41:20 K:BB in 37.1 innings over his last eight starts. Abbott will look to right the ship in his next outing, scheduled to come in Detroit.... Reds' Andrew Abbott: Escapes with no-decision
Abbott came away with a no-decision in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Angels, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks over four-plus innings. He struck out five. The rookie southpaw stuck around long enough to see the Reds take the lead in the top of the fifth inning, but after he put the first two batters aboard in the bottom of the frame, Abbott got the hook and failed to qualify for the win in an eventual 9-4 victory. He's now failed to complete six innings in five straight starts, posting a 6.46 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 27:12 K:BB through 23.2 innings over that stretch. Abbott will try to get on track in his next outing, likely to come early next week in San Francisco.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Andrew Abbott: Bounces back versus Pirates
Abbott (7-3) earned the win over the Pirates on Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out nine. Coming off back-to-back clunkers against the Cubs and Nationals which saw him yield a combined 10 runs over nine innings, Abbott produced a much sharper effort Friday. He cruised through five shutout frames, but the lefty was chased one out short of a quality start after giving up a sixth-inning home run to Ke'Bryan Hayes and then a double and RBI single. Abbott collected 10 swinging strikes on 98 pitches in the outing.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Andrew Abbott: Falters against Cubs
Abbott pitched 3.1 innings in a no-decision Monday in the Reds' 6-5 win over the Cubs, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five batters. Abbott was handed a 6-1 lead through the middle of the the third frame, but he was unable to convert that to a win. The rookie allowed Chicago to quickly get back into the contest with a three-run bottom of the third, and he was pulled with one out in the fourth after 76 pitches, only 45 of which were strikes. The outing was the shortest of Abbott's career and snapped a string of three straight quality starts. Despite the poor performance, there's no reason for Abbott's fantasy managers to panic -- he came into Monday having tossed two straight scoreless starts and still holds an impressive 2.35 ERA and 1.03 WHIP on the campaign.... Reds' Andrew Abbott: Dominant over eight shutout frames
Abbott (5-2) earned the win Thursday, allowing one hit and two walks over eight scoreless innings against the Giants. He struck out six. Abbot was spectacular, allowing only three baserunners while pitching a career-high eight innings. It was the fourth time this season he's thrown five or more shutout innings. and the second time he's allowed just one hit. The left-hander has won five of nine starts to begin his rookie campaign and lowered his ERA to 2.10.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Andrew Abbott: Bounces back but takes loss
Abbott (4-2) took the loss Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings against Milwaukee. He struck out three. Abbott was exceptional outside of a pair of leadoff home runs allowed to Christian Yelich in the first and William Contreras in the fourth. Though he took the loss, Abbott picked up his sixth quality start of the campaign and offered a strong bounce-back from his last start, when he gave up six runs against the Brewers on July 7. Through eight starts (47.2 innings), Abbott owns a 2.45 ERA and 51:16 K:BB with a 1.5 HR/9. His next start is tentatively scheduled to come against the Giants at Great American Ball Park.... Reds' Andrew Abbott: Coughs up six runs
Abbott (4-1) allowed six runs on nine hits and a walk over 4.1 innings Friday, striking out six and taking a loss against Milwaukee. The Brewers jumped on Abbott for four runs in the first two innings. It was the first major hiccup by the rookie after he had allowed one run or fewer in five of his first six career starts. After a 17.2-inning scoreless streak to open his career, Abbott has given up 11 runs over his last four outings. He still owns an impressive 2.38 ERA with a 48:14 K:BB across 41.2 frames.... Abbott turned in the best start of his young career Sunday, holding San Diego scoreless through 23 outs before being pulled at 101 pitches after allowing a solo home run to Ha-Seong Kim. The outing set a career high in strikeouts and marked his third straight start fanning eight or more batters, Through six appearances (37.2 innings), Abbott owns a perfect 4-0 record with a 1.21 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and a 42:13 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to take on the Brewers next, who strike out the fourth-most in MLB and rank 25th in runs per game.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Andrew Abbott: Career-high 10 strikeouts
Abbott didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Rockies after allowing three runs on four hits while striking out 10 batters over six innings. Abbott's run of three straight scoreless starts to begin MLB career came to an end in a hurry Wednesday, as the rookie left-hander allowed a leadoff home run to Brenton Doyle to open the game. He went on to surrender two more solo homers on the afternoon but still managed to reach six innings and set a career high in strikeouts. Abbott also didn't walk a batter for the first time in four starts this season.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Andrew Abbott: Sleeper pitchers for Week 13 (June 19-25)
Andrew Abbott has yet to allow a run in three major-league starts. The strikeout and walk rates have been bad, as has the quality of contact, so it's likely his luck runs out at some point. But the Rockies on the road make for such a favorable matchup that you can hope it doesn't happen this week.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Andrew Abbott: Added to roster ahead of debut
The Reds selected Abbott's contract from Triple-A Louisville ahead of his scheduled start Monday versus the Brewers. Abbott is slated to make his major-league debut Monday and will line up for a two-start week, with Cincinnati already confirming him to make his next turn through the rotation Saturday in St. Louis. The left-hander leads the minor leagues with 90 strikeouts thus far in 2023 to go along with a 2.50 ERA and 0.93 WHIP along the way across 54 innings between Double-A Pensacola and Louisville. Abbott's first matchup is a good one, as the Brewers rank last in baseball as a team with a .281 wOBA versus lefties.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Andrew Abbott: Possible waiver wire pickups
Andrew Abbott has earned his reputation as a bat-misser, his vertical approach angle creating a "rising" effect on his low-90s fastball to make it a swing-and-miss offering. It means he succeeds on deception more than stuff, which always raises sustainability concerns, and there are others. If we exclude his three starts at Double-A Chattanooga of the Southern League, which is experimenting with pre-tacked baseballs, and count only the seven he made at Triple-A Louisville, his ERA goes from 2.50 to 3.05, his K/9 from 15.0 to 12.7, and most significantly, his HR/9 from 1.3 to 1.9. That's a bit troubling given that he'll be calling the majors' most homer-friendly park home. So to be clear, Abbott is no slam dunk to succeed in the majors, but you'll still want to add him prior to his big-league debut Monday in case he strikes out everyone in sight.... See More ... Reds' Andrew Abbott: Making MLB debut Monday
The Reds will select Abbott's contract from Triple-A Louisville to have him start Monday's game against the Brewers in Cincinnati, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Hunter Greene will have his next start pushed back because of hip stiffness, so Abbott will get the chance to make his MLB debut as the Reds kick off their series with Milwaukee. According to Goldsmith , the 24-year-old lefty won't merely be in line for a spot start, as it appears Abbott will get a longer-term look in the Cincinnati rotation. Abbott has been sensational in the minors, and while his rookie status and tough home park create some fantasy risk, there's no denying there's potential for him to help in redraft formats during the 2023 campaign.... Reds' Andrew Abbott: On cusp of promotion
The Reds added Abbott to their taxi squad Sunday, and he's expected to enter Cincinnati's rotation during the upcoming week, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Cincinnati has five healthy starters at the moment, so expect manager David Bell to clarify whether one of those pitchers is moving to the bullpen, the minors or the injured list to clear a spot for Abbott, or if the 24-year-old lefty will become part of a six-man rotation. After earning a promotion to Louisville following a dazzling start to the season at Double-A Chattanooga, Abbott didn't slow down over his seven Triple-A starts, pitching to a 3.05 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 54:14 K:BB in 38.1 innings. The strikeout upside Abbott offers will make him an intriguing speculative pickup in deeper leagues, though he could endure some hiccups in his first exposure to the majors.... See More ... Reds' Andrew Abbott: Moves up to Double-A
The Reds promoted Abbott from High-A Dayton to Double-A Chattanooga on Tuesday. The 22-year-old lefty climbs a run on the minor-league ladder after he went 3-0 with a 0.67 ERA and 40:7 K:BB across 27 innings. Abbott profiles as a command specialist more so than a power pitcher, as he sports a fastball that tops out around the mid-90s.... See More ... See Less
