Austin Davis: Dumped by Houston
The Astros released Davis on June 26.
A veteran of 136 career appearances in the majors, Davis failed to gain any momentum for a call-up to Houston in 2023 after struggling mightily at Triple-A Sugar Land. Over his 20 relief outings at Sugar Land spanning 25.2 innings, Davis pitched to an 11.22 ERA and walked more batters (38) than he struck out (34).... See More ... See Less
Astros' Austin Davis: Reassigned to MiLB camp
Davis was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Astros on Tuesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Astros' Austin Davis: Signs with Astros
Davis signed a minor-league contract with the Astros on Wednesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Davis elected free agency in September after being designated for assignment by Minnesota, but he'll serve as a non-roster invitee during spring training in 2023 after signing with the Astros. Over 52 appearances (three starts) between the Red Sox and Twins last year, he posted a 5.79 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 56 innings.... See More ... See Less
Austin Davis: Heads to free agency
Davis elected free agency after clearing waivers Sunday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A St. Paul after the Twins recently designated him for assignment, Davis will try his luck on the open market. Between stops with Boston and Minnesota, Davis turned in a 5.79 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over 56 innings in the big leagues this season.... See More ... See Less

Twins' Austin Davis: Claimed by Twins
Davis was claimed off waivers by the Twins on Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Davis hasn't been particularly effective over the last two months, posting a 9.00 ERA and 1.88 WHIP in 25 innings over 22 appearances since the start of July. Since he doesn't have any minor-league options remaining, Davis will join the big club rather than Triple-A St. Paul, though the Twins may wait until the roster expands Thursday before officially activating him.... Red Sox's Austin Davis: Dropped from 40-man roster
Davis will be designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Sunday, Chad Jennings of The Athletic reports.
Davis had a strong start to the 2022 season but was much less effective over the last several months. He gave up four runs (two earned) in two innings during Sunday's loss to the Rays and will ultimately lose his spot on Boston's 40-man roster. It's not yet clear whether the 29-year-old will land a spot in another team's bullpen.... See More ... See Less
Red Sox's Austin Davis: Serving as opener
Davis will serve as the opener during Friday's game against the Brewers, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.
Although Brayan Bello was initially slated to start Friday's matchup, he'll instead be available out of the bullpen and could serve as the bulk reliever while Davis begins the game on the mound. Over nine appearances since the start of July, Davis has posted a 10.13 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 10.2 innings.... See More ... See Less

Red Sox's Austin Davis: Tosses two scoreless innings
Davis allowed no hits and a walk while striking out two in two-plus scoreless innings during Sunday's loss to the Rangers. He didn't factor into the decision.
Davis, a reliever, set down the first six batters faced, before he issued a walk to the leadoff batter in the third inning and was removed. The 29-year-old made his first career start as Sunday's opener, and he was effective ahead of Tanner Houck, who pitched three innings as the primary pitcher. Davis has held the opposition scoreless in 11 of his last 12 appearances, and he has a 2.35 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 15.1 innings this season. The southpaw should be an option to serve as an opener once again at some point, but he'll likely return to a bullpen role following Sunday's outing.... See More ... See Less
Red Sox's Austin Davis: Starting Sunday
Davis will start Sunday's series finale against the Rangers, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.
Davis will open the game for Boston and could pitch multiple innings, per Red Sox manager Alex Cora, but he's pitched no more than two innings this season. This will be the left-hander's first MLB start and first start of any kind since 2016 at High-A Clearwater. He gets the nod over Tanner Houck, who opened the season in Boston's rotation but has mostly been used as a bulk-inning pitcher since missing a turn in Toronto due to his unvaccinated status. Houck also made one start, lasting just 2.2 innings and allowing three runs May 8, the last time he's pitched. He's rested enough to throw multiple innings Sunday following Davis.... See More ... Red Sox's Austin Davis: Tagged with loss
Davis (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief Monday against the Tigers after allowing one run on two hits across one inning. He struck out one.
Davis allowed a one-out single to Tucker Barnhart in the seventh but retired the side afterward, so he began the eighth inning as well. He left the game after just one batter into the eighth after allowing another single, this time to Austin Meadows. Unfortunately for Davis, Meadows would come around to score on Javier Baez's home run in the next at-bat when Ryan Brasier was on the mound, so Davis was stuck with the loss. This was Davis' second outing of the season, as he had pitched a one-out scoreless outing against the Yankees on April 9.... See More ... See Less

He snapped a seven-inning scoreless streak with the meltdown. Davis has a 5.32 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 25:9 K:BB across 22 innings between Boston and Pittsburgh this season. He likely won't find himself in high-leverage spots such as Sunday's very often.... See More ... See Less

Davis was traded from the Pirates to the Red Sox in exchange for Michael Chavis on Friday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Davis is unlikely to be a major piece of the puzzle for the Red Sox. He'll give the team another left-handed option in the bullpen, but he owns a 5.59 ERA in 9.2 innings this season and a 5.65 ERA in 71.2 innings for his career.... See More ... See Less
