Player Outlook
Gavin Stone fell on his face against big-league hitters, and the big-league numbers (6.64 FIP, 1.90 WHIP) and Pacific Coast League numbers (4.52 FIP, 1.31 WHIP) are pretty ugly for a pitcher with an ADP inside the top 450 for 2024. However, he showed signs of looking like the 2022 version and 2023 spring training version of himself down the stretch. He had a 1.73 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 35 strikeouts in his final 26 innings at Triple-A and had a 3.52 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 10 strikeouts in 7.2 innings over his final two big-league appearances. It's a tiny sample and the competition at Triple-A was pretty watered down when he was having that late-season success. However, Stone, whose changeup is his best pitch and who has shown he can handle a starter's workload, isn't the type of arm teams move to the bullpen until they've exhausted all efforts to develop him as a starter. His team context is obviously elite and he was very well thought of a year ago, so Stone checks a lot of boxes as a post-hype sleeper. Injuries and transactions will still play a role in determining the Dodgers' starting rotation, but Stone is firmly in the mix for one of the final spots as of the Winter Meetings.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Officially captures fifth spot

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts informed Stone on Monday that he'll open the season as the team's No. 5 starter, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. Stone was told he officially won the job after he struck out eight of the 11 batters he faced during an exhibition appearance versus the Korean national team Monday in Seoul. The young right-hander also impressed during Cactus League action, allowing just one run with a 9:1 K:BB over 9.2 innings of work. Stone struggled mightily during his time with the big club last season, but a 32.6 percent strikeout rate in the minors points to his upside. He'll be available out of the bullpen for Los Angeles' two-game, season-opening set with the Padres in Seoul on Wednesday and Thursday, but his first start will likely come at home versus the Giants in the Dodgers' first series of April.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Expected to be fifth starter

Stone is likely to open the season as the Dodgers' No. 5 starter, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Stone earned the rotation spot with an impressive Cactus League performance which saw him yield just one run with a 9:1 K:BB over 9.2 innings of work. The 25-year-old was knocked around last season with the Dodgers, posting a 9.00 ERA and 22:13 K:BB across 31 frames. However, Stone is a former top prospect who collected a 32.6 percent strikeout rate in the minors. He should be better equipped for success in the big leagues in 2024 and makes for a fine late-round fantasy option.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Frontrunner for No. 5 starter role

With Emmet Sheehan (upper body) set to begin the season on the IL, Stone and Michael Grove look like the leading candidates to claim the Dodgers' No. 5 rotation spot, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. Stone was originally thought to be competing with Sheehan for the team's final rotation spot, but it appears that Grove is in the running as well. Grove may have helped his case with a standout Cactus League start Saturday during which he pitched 3.1 scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six batters, but he struggled in two previous spring appearances. Meanwhile, Stone has been excellent in surrendering just one run over 5.2 innings with a 4:1 K:BB, so he's probably the frontrunner between the two. Manager Dave Roberts mentioned Kyle Hurt and Ryan Yarbrough are in the mix for the No. 5 starter role as well.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Making push for rotation spot

Through three Cactus League outings this spring, Stone has allowed one run on three hits over 5.2 innings while posting a 4:1 K:BB. Stone was already being considered for a spot in the Opening Day rotation entering spring with news that Walker Buehler (elbow) won't be ready to pitch right away, and a subsequent minor setback for Emmet Sheehan (general soreness) has only increased Stone's odds of working as a starter out the gate. The right-hander has done his part to boost his chances, looking great through his first three spring outings, with the most recent being a three-inning, 35-pitch scoreless start against Colorado on Sunday. Stone also put on 10-to-15 pounds during the offseason in an attempt to add and maintain velocity during the campaign, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Optioned to Triple-A

The Dodgers optioned Stone to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Stone gave up 10 runs over 13 innings across three appearances during his latest stint in the majors, and he will now return to the minors amid his struggles. Michael Grove (lat) will return from the injured list to replace Stone on the active roster.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Takes loss as primary pitcher

Stone (1-1) took the loss Friday as the Dodgers fell 5-1 to the Giants, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings of relief. He worked behind opener Caleb Ferguson, who pitched a scoreless inning. Stone ended up getting tagged for home runs by Mike Yastrzemski and Thairo Estrada, accounting for all three runs on his line. Friday marked the third time in Stone's last four outings that he has given up multiple home runs. He's now sitting on a 9.00 ERA, 1.90 WHIP and 22:13 K:BB through 31 innings over eight appearances (four starts) for the season.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Gets last 10 outs for save

Stone allowed a hit and two walks while striking out five over 3.1 scoreless innings to earn the save in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Mariners. Stone was initially expected to be a bulk reliever but instead finished off the game after strong performances from opener Shelby Miller and Ryan Yarbrough, who went 4.2 innings. This was Stone's first scoreless outing in the majors, and just the second time he's allowed fewer than four runs. He's at a 9.45 ERA, 2.03 WHIP and 17:11 K:BB through 26.2 innings over seven appearances. He may continue to work in some sort of piggyback role with Yarbrough, though Clayton Kershaw's workload is also being managed to close out the regular season. In any case, Stone should next be available to pitch near the end of the upcoming week.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: To pitch Sunday

Stone will pitch Sunday against the Mariners as either a traditional starter or bulk reliever, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. Stone pitched as a traditional starter Monday and struggled across 5.1 innings against San Diego. Manager Dave Roberts' wording Friday, when he indicated that Stone would work "the bulk innings", suggests that the right-hander will follow an opener this time around, though it's unclear who will fill that role. Emmet Sheehan was originally projected to start Sunday but could throw a shorter outing instead with the Dodgers likely monitoring his innings carefully.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Poor outing in spot start

Stone allowed seven runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out two over 5.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Padres. Stone pitched with a lead for much of his outing, but he let it slip away in the sixth inning. The right-hander was making his first major-league appearance since Aug. 27, but he's now allowed at least four runs in five of his six outings this season. It shakes out as a 10.80 ERA, 2.19 WHIP and 12:9 K:BB through 23.1 innings overall. It's unclear if he'll remain in the majors, though it seems like the Dodgers would fare better with Emmet Sheehan as their fifth starter after Stone's latest disappointing effort.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Sent down to Triple-A

Stone was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday. After getting the call from Triple-A on Sunday, Stone was deployed as a bulk reliever behind Caleb Ferguson in the Dodgers' series finale with Boston, pitching six innings and giving up four runs on five hits while picking up the win. Though the Dodgers have an opening in the rotation, the team appears likely to call up Ryan Pepiot from Triple-A to start Wednesday versus the Diamondbacks rather than sticking with Stone. By moving Stone back to the minors, the Dodgers were able to clear room on the 26-man active roster for waiver pickup Tyson Miller. Stone should settle back into the Oklahoma City rotation upon rejoining the club.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: First career win

Stone (1-0) earned the win in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Red Sox. He allowed four runs on five hits and zero walks while striking out two over six innings. Recalled to make his first big-league appearance since July 4, Stone entered in the second and went six innings to earn his first career victory. Stone had allowed 17 earned runs over 12 innings over his previous four appearances but has pitched effectively in Triple-A since his most recent demotion, earning a 2.85 ERA with 49 strikeouts and 15 walks over 41 innings. It remains to be seen if this effort will earn Stone more opportunities moving forward for the Dodgers.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Recalled for bulk relief

Stone was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City and will serve as the Dodgers' bulk pitcher Sunday at Boston, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. The 24-year-old right-hander is expected to follow opener Caleb Ferguson in Sunday's series finale at Fenway Park. Stone has allowed 18 runs -- 17 earned -- in 12 innings of work this season at the major-league level.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Slated for bulk relief

Stone will be called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to serve as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher Caleb Ferguson in Sunday's game in Boston, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. Stone made four appearances (three starts) for the Dodgers earlier this season and posted a 12.75 ERA and 3.00 WHIP over 12 innings, but the team will bring him back and see how he fares while working behind an opener. In seven outings with Oklahoma City since the All-Star break, Stone has delivered a 3.34 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 41:15 K:BB across 35 frames.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Back with big-league club

Stone was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. Stone will get the call to the big-league squad to give Los Angeles a fresh arm after Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) was sent to the 15-day injured list. Stone has gotten roughed up through three starts so far this season (14.40 ERA and 3.00 WHIP with a 5:7 K:BB across 10 frames), though he's drawn tough opponents in Philadelphia, Atlanta and Tampa Bay. The right-hander is expected to be available in long relief Monday night in the event Michael Grove struggles.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Recalled for start

The Dodgers recalled Stone from Triple-A Oklahoma City ahead of his scheduled start Monday in Atlanta, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports. Stone will pick up his second MLB start Monday and will have an opportunity to prove he should stick around with the big club as the Dodgers battle injuries in their rotation. The right-hander struggled in his major-league debut earlier this month, though he pitched better upon returning to Oklahoma City. Stone's upside warrants him being rostered in most leagues, though it may be wise for those in daily-moves formats to keep him on the bench for Monday's outing.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Starting Monday

Stone will be recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start Monday in Atlanta, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. It won't be just a spot start for the 24-year-old, as manager Dave Roberts said the right-hander will fill the rotation spot of Dustin May (forearm) for the "foreseeable future." Stone made his big-league debut May 3 versus the Phillies and surrendered four runs on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout over four frames, but he posted a 2.45 ERA with 14 strikeouts in two starts since returning to Triple-A.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Optioned to Triple-A

Stone was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday. Stone struggled in his MLB debut against the Phillies on Wednesday, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and two walks over four innings. He's considered one of the team's top pitching prospects, and while he's heading back to Oklahoma City for now, he stands a good chance of making starts for the Dodgers again this summer.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Confirmed to start Wednesday

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Stone will be called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. The Dodgers played things coy for as long as they could, but it's now official that Stone will make his MLB debut against Philadelphia on Wednesday. The right-hander ranks as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, and he allowed just one run over his last two outings while forging a 15:4 K:BB. Stone has three pitches that can miss bats and has shown the ability to command those offerings, but those who are considering using the 24-year-old in fantasy should be aware of the risk that comes from an MLB debut.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: Possible waiver wire pickups

Though it's certainly possible Gavin Stone's impending debut Wednesday is simply to build in some extra rest for the Dodgers rotation (Dustin May in particular), it doesn't necessarily mean he'll be sent back down afterward. The Dodgers haven't been shy about using the IL in strategic ways. What seems like a small opening could become a bigger one, and the right-hander, whose changeup is a true work of art, is equipped to take advantage. His 1.48 ERA in the minors last year was as good as you'll ever see, and it was accompanied by 12.4 K/9 and an 18 percent swinging-strike rate. He's turned things around in his last two starts at Triple-A, too, allowing one earned run in 9 2/3 innings while striking out 15.

  • Dodgers' Gavin Stone: MLB debut likely for Wednesday

The Dodgers are expected to promote Stone from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start against the Phillies on Wednesday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports. The right-hander is considered one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, and while he's posted a 4.74 ERA over 24.2 innings thus far with Triple-A Oklahoma City, he's allowed just one run over his last two outings while registering a 15:4 K:BB. Stone's stuff is good enough for him to find immediate success, but the Phillies will present a challenging first test for the 24-year-old's MLB debut.
