Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Headed down to Triple-A
Teng was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
The move corresponds with the Giants removing Sean Hjelle (elbow) from the 15-day IL. Teng has struggled in his first season in the majors, allowing 12 earned runs on 15 hits and eight walks over 11 innings. The right-hander will look to get his command back with Sacramento, where he posted a 4.22 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 79 innings in 2023.

Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Goes three innings in debut
Teng allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over three innings versus the Padres on Sunday.
Starter Daulton Jefferies (hip) gave up nine runs (five earned) over the first two innings, and Teng was called on for a long-relief assignment. Teng gave up three runs himself in the third inning, but he settled in after that. All in all, it's a fairly forgettable major-league debut for the right-hander, who posted a mediocre 4.42 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 164:68 K:BB over 126.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A last season. The Giants' rotation has some holes early in 2024, but Teng figures to be a multi-inning reliever in the short term and could lose his spot on the 26-man roster once Alex Cobb (hip) is able to make his season debut.

Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Recalled from Sacramento
The Giants recalled Teng from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
The move corresponds with Luke Jackson (back) being placed on the Giants' 15-day IL. Teng started 2023 in Double-A Richmond, and he managed to work his way up to Triple-A Sacramento by June. With Sacramento, he posted a 4.22 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 96:48 K:BB over 79 innings while going 6-5 over 16 starts. Teng will fill Jackson's spot in the bullpen.

The Giants optioned Teng (oblique) to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Teng didn't make any Cactus League appearances due to a left oblique strain, but he seems to be just about fully healthy at this point, as he's scheduled to pitch in a minor-league game Wednesday, according to Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com. The 25-year-old right-hander should open the season as a member of Sacramento's rotation.

The Giants announced Wednesday that Teng will miss at least the first 2-to-3 weeks of spring training with a left oblique strain, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Teng was added to the Giants' 40-man roster over the winter, but even if he wasn't sidelined for the start of camp with the oblique injury, he wouldn't have been a serious candidate for a spot in the big club's Opening Day rotation. Teng has shown some upside with a 13.0 K/9 over 47.1 innings with Richmond this season. He also posted a 4.75 ERA in his second season at Double-A, but his 3.23 FIP suggests he had some poor luck. He rides a sweeper and mixes in a fastball, though he may need to develop a third pitch to navigate the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He'll likely spend the rest of 2023 at Triple-A.

Giants' Kai-Wei Teng: Sweeper leading to success
Teng has a 2.63 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 24 innings across six starts for Double-A Richmond.
According to Dylan White of Baseball America, Teng throws his sweeper nearly two-thirds of the time. That's an extreme percentage, especially for a starting pitcher, but his breaking ball is a better pitch than his 94-mph fastball. Essentially a two-pitch pitcher right now, Teng has gone between 3.2 innings and 4.2 innings in all six starts.

Teng was handed a 10-game suspension for using a foreign substance to doctor baseballs. He's now posted a 1-2 record, 4.74 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 39:15 K:BB across 24.2 innings with High-A Eugene.
