Massey (back) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Anne Rogers reports.
Nick Loftin was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday and Massey is expected to be activated in a corresponding move ahead of the Royals' weekend series against the Orioles. Massey has been out all season with a lower-back injury but slashed .382/.417/.706 with two home runs in eight rehab games between Omaha and Double-A Northwest Arkansas. The 26-year-old should share playing time at second base with Adam Frazier once activated.

Royals' Michael Massey: Continuing rehab assignment
Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Monday that Massey (back) will travel with Triple-A Omaha this week as part of his rehab assignment, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
Massey started the season on the 10-day IL after experiencing lower-back tightness late in spring training. Quatraro noted that he wants Massey to get in a few more games and at-bats to ensure the 26-year-old is 100 percent healthy before returning to the Royals. Massey has appeared in five games with Triple-A Omaha, slashing .409/.458/.636 with five doubles and six RBI over 24 plate appearances.

Massey experienced lower-back tightness a little over a week ago and hadn't played in any Cactus League games since March 16, so his move to the IL to begin the season was fully expected. Per MLB.com, Massey has been limited to playing light catch since the injury cropped up, but the Royals still aren't anticipating his stay on the IL to be a lengthy one. He'll remain behind at the Royals' spring facility in Arizona to continue ramping back up and will first be eligible for activation April 4, though it may be a stretch for him to make it back by that date.

After hitting .229 with a middling .655 OPS across 129 contests in 2023, this is a good start to the spring for Massey. The Royals had an active offseason, and the signing of Adam Frazier -- who is 0-for-6 over three spring games -- could have a negative impact on Massey's playing time, though Frazier can also be an option in the corner outfield. Utility man Nick Loftin could also poach some at-bats at the keystone, especially against left-handed pitchers, so Massey will need to continue his solid spring to avoid losing his spot.

Massey jumped on a hanging sinker from Sawyer Gipson-Long in the top of the third inning and sent it into the stands in right field, putting the Royals up 3-0. He later added a single but was left stranded, giving him his sixth multi-hit game this month. The second baseman is now up to 15 home runs on the season, with five of them coming in September.
