Player Outlook
The Red Sox appeared to have moved on from Bobby Dalbec, a one-time top prospect that failed to deliver in more than 900 at-bats in the majors, as they handed first base to Triston Casas. There was a late-season uprising in 2021, but Dalbec took a step back in 2022 - his inability to consistently hit right-handers made it impossible for the club to consider him as a full-time starter. Deeming Casas ready, the organization placed Dalbec at Triple-A Worcester, where he spent most of the 2023 season. For the WooSox, he made everyone ignore an habitually high strikeout rate; the power-hitting corner infielder mashed with a .938 OPS and 33 home runs over 114 games. In three separate stints in the majors, however, Dalbec reverted to MLB-version of himself. Surprisingly, the Red Sox haven't traded him yet, despite interest from other teams during the winter meetings. With Justin Turner in free agency, Boston needs a right-handed hitting backup, and Dalbec received a vote of confidence from manager Alex Cora and new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow during the offseason.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Still with team

Dalbec appears to have won a spot on the roster, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Confirmation of Boston's 26-man roster is still pending, but the Red Sox released Dalbec's main competition, C.J. Cron, on Sunday. The team could still be in the market for right-handed complement to Triston Casas at first base, although manager Alex Cora told reporters that there is a "good chance" Dalbec sticks. He finished the Grapefruit League batting .255 (12-for-47) with three home runs and nine RBI. His position versatility could be helpful, as Dalbec can play both corner infield spots.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Will play outfield

Dalbec will soon get starts as an outfielder in spring games, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Dalbec is competing with C.J. Cron to be the right-handed backup behind Triston Casas at first base and can also play third base. With Rob Refsnyder (toe) set to miss four-to-six weeks, the Red Sox will give Dalbec exposure to the outfield. He doesn't have major-league experience there, but Dalbec did play 36 games in right field for Triple-A Worcester last season. Dalbec, who started at third base Wednesday and went 2-for-4, is 8-for-27 (.296) with a double, a home run and seven RBI over 12 Grapefruit League contests.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Facing competition at 1B

Dalbec is not projected to make the Opening Day roster in the latest roster projection from Ian Browne of MLB.com. While the Red Sox have exposed Dalbec to the outfield, he had been expected to back up Triston Casas at first base. That all changed when Boston inked C.J. Cron to a minor-league deal with an invite to camp Friday. If Cron passes a physical, he could serve as the right-handed complement to Casas.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Receiving outfield reps

Dalbec is taking reps in the outfield Friday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. Defense has never been a strength for Dalbec, but becoming a viable option in the corner outfield would increase his value as a utility player. The 28-year-old tallied just 53 plate appearances with the Red Sox last season, seeing most of his action at first base, but he was a force offensively at Triple-A Worcester with 33 home runs, 17 steals and a .938 OPS.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Strikeouts piling up

Dalbec went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in Friday's 3-0 win over Baltimore. Dalbec continues to fill a spot in the lineup at first base with Triston Casas (shoulder) done for the season. Dalbec hit safely in the first five games after being called up from Triple-A Worcester, but he's gone the other the way since. The corner infielder is 1-for-16 with 10 strikeouts over his last five contests.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Cranks first homer of campaign

Dalbec went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Rangers. Dalbec's homer, a 427-foot blast off Jon Gray in the second inning, was his first with the Red Sox in nearly a full calendar year. The 28-year-old Dalbec has been swinging the bat well since he was recalled from Triple-A on Saturday, going 6-for-14 with three extra-base hits in four games. He should continue to see fairly regular time at first base down the stretch, with Triston Casas (shoulder) likely out for the year.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Makes second straight start

Dalbec started at first base and went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Monday's 4-2 win over Texas. Dalbec made a second consecutive start at first base in place of the injured Triston Casas (shoulder), who is likely done for the season, per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. Dalbec is 3-for-8 in two games since being called up following Casas' placement on the injured list.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Starts at first base

Dalbec started at first base and went 1-for-3 in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Toronto. Dalbec was summoned from Triple-A Worcester after Boston placed Triston Casas (shoulder) on the injured list. Dalbec mashed for the WooSox, slugging .557 with 33 home runs and 80 RBI over 114 games. Hitting Triple-A pitching, however, has never been the issue. The 28-year-old maintains a .232/.298/.452 slash line over 915 plate appearances in the majors. While Dalbec could get regular work in the final weeks of the season, he does not have a path to a regular gig in 2024.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Back in big leagues

Dalbec was recalled from Triple-A Worcester by the Red Sox on Saturday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Dalbec hit a lopsided .232/.298/.456 over his first three big-league seasons, good for a league-average 100 wRC+. He's only received 14 plate appearances at the MLB level this season, striking out in eight of them. He owns a .938 OPS and 33 homers for Triple-A Worcester, but he still struck out 34.3 percent of the time, so it's unlikely his big-league numbers will be significantly better going forward. He could make a handful of starts down the stretch in the absence of Triston Casas (shoulder), though the Red Sox could also play Justin Turner at first base.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Back in action at Triple-A

Dalbec (wrist) has returned to action for Triple-A Worcester. Dalbec was hit by a pitch on his left wrist in late June and missed some time. The infielder returned to action July 5 and is 13-for-40 with three home runs and nine RBI over 10 games. That includes Wednesday's win over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in which he started a 5-4-3 triple play.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Hurts wrist, not playing

Dalbec was injured after being hit by a pitch in the area of his left hand/wrist last Thursday while playing for Triple-A Worcester, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Dalbec was hit by the pitch in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader, then homered in the second game before the area began to swell. He has missed the five games since. WooSox manager Chad Tracy provided an update Tuesday to Katie Morrison-O'Day of MassLive.com, saying X-rays came back clean and the team is waiting on CT scan results. The manager is hopeful Dalbec will return this week.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Sent back to Worcester

Boston optioned Dalbec to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Dalbec drew only one plate appearance during this latest brief stint with the Red Sox and has gone 2-for-12 with eight strikeouts in 10 major-league games this year. Alex Verdugo was activated from the bereavement list in a corresponding roster move.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Launches two homers

Dalbec went 4-for-6 with a triple, two home runs, four RBI and two additional runs scored for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday. Dalbec broke out of a mini slump -- 3-for-21 over the previous six games -- in a big way Wednesday. He continues to rake at Triple-A with 16 home runs and 40 RBI over 47 games for the WooSox. It seems like there would be a home for his bat in Boston, but the team remains committed to fixing Triston Casas at first base and won't have Dalbec at third base ahead of Rafael Devers. It appears the organization is content having him light up the minors and improve his trade value.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Being shopped

The Red Sox are actively shopping Dalbec, Peter Gammons reports. Gammons reported two National League executives as the source of his intel. Dalbec does not have a path to a regular role with Boston, but both execs believe Dalbec can harness his power and play everyday at third base.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Optioned to Triple-A

Dalbec was optioned to Triple-A Worcester by Boston on Friday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. It's likely that the corresponding transaction will be Pablo Reyes joining Boston on Saturday after he was acquired by the Red Sox in a trade before Friday's game. Dalbec will head back to Triple-A for now, but he figures to make several more trips between Boston and Worcester before the 2023 season comes to a close.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Shifts to third base

Dalbec started at third base and went 0-for-3 in Thursday's 9-3 loss to Tampa Bay. He filled in for a resting Rafael Devers after playing shortstop the day before. The Red Sox are moving Dalbec around -- he's played first base, shortstop and now third base over the last three games -- trying to take advantage of a potentially explosive right-handed bat against a string of southpaws. He's 2-for-9 with two walks and a stolen base since being called up.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Starts at shortstop

Dalbec started at shortstop and went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 9-7 loss to the Rays. Dalbec made his second career start at shortstop, and it was an inauspicious one. He booted a grounder in the first inning that helped lead to Tampa Bay scoring three times. Dalbec is familiar with that side of the infield, having come up through the system as a third baseman, but he doesn't have a defensive home on this year's club. He's expected to remain up with the team while the Red Sox are projected to face four straight lefties through the weekend, but Dalbec could be back in the minors after that stretch.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: On base twice, steals bag

Dalbec started at first base and went 1-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base in Tuesday's 7-2 loss to the Rays. The Red Sox held primary first baseman Triston Casas on the bench, giving Dalbec his first start since being called up from Triple-A Worcester after Boston placed Adam Duvall (wrist) on the injured list. The Red Sox opted to call up Dalbec instead of center fielder Jarren Duran because they are projected to face several lefties in the coming week and felt Dalbec's right-handed bat was a better offensive fit. At this time, first base is not considered a platoon, although Casas, much like Dalbec the last two seasons, is off to a slow start. He's batting .161 after two hitless at-bats off the bench Tuesday. The Red Sox will see right-hander Taj Bradley on Wednesday, so expect Casas back in the lineup. After Wednesday, Boston is projected to see four consecutive lefties, which means potential starts for Dalbec. At some point next week, the team could replace Dalbec with the lefty-hitting Duran, who could be part of the rotation replacing Duvall in the field.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Making start at first base

Dalbec is starting at first base and batting eighth for Tuesday's contest against the Rays. Dalbec laced his first hit of the season Monday in a pinch-hit capacity and will now make his first start Tuesday. Boston is slated to face a slew of southpaws over the next several days, so Dalbec could be busy.

  • Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Makes season debut

Dalbec went 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter then finished the game at first base in Monday's 1-0 loss to the Rays. Dalbec batted for Triston Casas in the eighth inning against lefty reliever Colin Poche for his his first appearance of 2023. He was called up when the Red Sox placed center fielder Adam Duvall (wrist) on the injured list. Dalbec got the call over natural center fielder Jarren Duran, because Boston is expected to see seven lefties in the next eight games, making the righty-hitting Dalbec a better offensive fit at this time, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. However, the team could promote Duran after the upcoming stretch and move Dalbec back to Triple-A Worcester. For now, Red Sox manager Alex Cora plans to rotate Rob Refsnyder, Raimel Tapia and the team's primary shortstop, Enrique Hernandez, in center. When Hernandez starts in the outfield, Cora could use Dalbec as a replacement at short, although Yu Chang is the most likely option.
