Player Outlook
It was another miserable year for the Rockies in 2023 with an NL-worst 59 wins, but Nolan Jones excelled after being acquired from the Guardians during the offseason. He missed Colorado's Opening Day roster but was called up for his season debut in late May, and he hit the ground running with a .942 OPS in his first 28 games. Jones put up similar numbers the rest of the way and finished his rookie campaign with a .297/.389/.542 slash line, 20 homers, 20 steals, 62 RBI and 60 runs in 106 contests. Encouragingly, the Coors Field effect didn't appear to have much of an impact on him, as he posted a .928 OPS at home compared to a .935 OPS on the road. However, his .404 BABIP isn't sustainable, which combined with a 29.7 percent strikeout rate is a strong indication of overperformance (that is also backed up by an xBA of .247 and xSLG of .492. Even taking that into account, it was an excellent season for Jones, who will open 2024 as an everyday starter in the Rockies outfield and should provide strong fantasy production even if he's unable to fully replicate last season's numbers.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Returns to action Monday

Jones (knee) will start in left field and bat second for the Rockies in Monday's Cactus League game versus the Brewers, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Jones had to depart Saturday's game after fouling a pitch off his right knee, but he managed to escape with just a bruise and is back in action after one day of rest. The 25-year-old will be the Rockies' everyday left fielder in 2024 following a breakout 2023 campaign.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Knee injury minor

Jones said Sunday his right knee injury appears to be minor, and he should be good to go for Thursday's Opening Day matchup with the Diamondbacks, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. The 25-year-old looked as though he might have suffered a more serious injury when he experienced some numbness in his foot after fouling a pitch off his knee Saturday, but he's just dealing with a bruise and should be considered day-to-day. Jones believes he could play in Monday's or Tuesday's exhibitions against the Brewers, but the Rockies may play it safe and hold him out until Thursday.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Exits with trainer

Jones was removed from Saturday's Cactus League game against the Reds with an apparent knee injury, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Jones appeared to have fouled a ball off his right knee and wasn't able to put any weight on it immediately afterward. A trainer eventually helped him off the field and into the clubhouse, where the medical staff will take a closer look at him. The Rockies will likely offer more information in the near future, at which point an idea may emerge regarding how much time -- if any -- Jones will miss. The 25-year-old outfielder entered Saturday's game slashing .267/.340/.422 with four RBI across 50 plate appearances this spring.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Returns to action Saturday

Jones (back) is starting in left field for the Rockies' spring training game against the Cubs on Saturday, Patrick Lyons of Just Baseball reports. Jones missed Colorado's last two exhibition games after being removed from Wednesday's contest due to lower-back tightness, but the issue seems to have subsided ahead of Saturday's game. Jones is 5-for-19 so far this spring with an RBI and four runs scored alongside six strikeouts.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Not in Thursday's lineup

Jones (back) is not in the Rockies' lineup for Thursday's Cactus League game versus the Royals, Manny Randhawa of MLB.com reports. He's not listed among the team's reserves, either. Jones had expressed optimism that he'd be able to play Thursday after departing Wednesday's game with lower-back tightness, but it's not a surprise the Rockies opted to hold him out at least a day. He should still be considered day-to-day for the time being.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Will occupy key spot in lineup

Jones is expected to hit third in Colorado's lineup during the regular season, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Jones was traded to the Rockies before the 2023 season after stalling in the Guardians' system, and he delivered a breakout season. His line was highlighted by a .245 ISO, and he also swiped 20 bases on 24 attempts. Jones primarily hit fifth and sixth during his first year with the club, so he may not be quite as free to take off on the basepaths in 2024, though he could make up for that with improved counting stats.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Drives in three in win

Jones went 1-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, three RBI and one run scored in Thursday's 14-5 win over the Dodgers. Jones knocked in one run on a fielder's choice in the third inning and added a two-run double a frame later. He's had a strong end of the season, hitting .330 (31-for-94) in September with six home runs, 10 steals and 21 RBI over 26 contests this month. Jones is at a .290/.383/.535 slash line with 19 homers, 18 steals, 60 RBI, 59 runs scored and 22 doubles across 103 games for the season, which has been a breakout year for the 25-year-old.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Swats 18th home run

Jones went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks in Sunday's loss to the Cubs. Jones got a hold of a slider from Jordan Wicks during the sixth inning and sent it over the wall in center field to extend the Rockies' lead to 3-1. The long ball was Jones' seventh against left-handed pitching and his 10th on the road, as he's shown he doesn't need to rely on playing at home to be an impactful bat. He's been a true breakout star for the Rockies and is potentially setting himself up for a massive year in 2024 with a full season under his belt. The 25-year-old is now slashing .286/.382/.531 with 18 home runs, 55 RBI, 56 runs, 17 steals and a 50:117 BB:K in 393 plate appearances.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Possible waiver wire pickups

The real question is how Nolan Jones is available enough to qualify for this list still. The power has been there all along, but he's really showcased his speed of late with five stolen bases already this month. How do a .280 batting average, 28 home runs, 24 stolen bases, 90 RBI and 84 runs sound to you? That's Jones' 162-game pace, and you'd be lucky to get those numbers in Round 5 of next year's draft, much less off the waiver wire. I suppose you could criticize his 31.7 percent strikeout rate, but the boost he gets from playing half his games at Coors Field more than makes up for it. Incidentally, that's where he'll be spending all of this week.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Notches steal

Jones went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, one RBI and one stolen base in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Jones extended his hitting streak to six games, a span in which he's gone 9-for-22 (.409) with four of his 12 steals on the season. The 25-year-old outfielder's improved hitting and solid baserunning have helped him hold down a steady place in the Rockies' lineup lately. For the year, he's mustered a .282/.365/.511 slash line with 14 home runs, 44 RBI, 42 runs scored, 18 doubles and two triples over 318 plate appearances.

Jones went 1-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and two stolen bases Sunday against the Blue Jays. Jones had a strong weekend series against the Blue Jays. While Jones is known primarily for his power, he has six swiped bags across 43 games since the All-Star break.

The 25-year-old has now hit 14 homers on the year, five of which have come since Aug. 8. Since the All-Star break, Jones has produced a .280 batting average with nine homers, 28 RBI, 23 runs scored and three stolen bases over 143 at-bats in 41 games.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Posts big stat line Saturday

Jones went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs, two RBI and a stolen base in an 11-5 victory versus the White Sox on Saturday. Jones knocked a two-run single in the second inning, giving him exactly two RBI in each of his past three games. He's now collected at least three hits three times over 17 contests during a solid August during which he's slashing .311/.394/.557 with three homers, 14 RBI, 10 runs and a stolen base. Strikeouts have been a problem for Jones -- he's at a 33.2 percent strikeout rate over 256 plate appearances -- but he's nonetheless managed to post a strong .283/.363/.504 slash line.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Pops 12th home

Jones went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and walk Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. Jones has struck out at a 46.8 clip across his last 12 starts, though he's still flashed power by blasting three home runs in that span. While his results have been inconsistent, his playing time has been steady as he's started 15 consecutive games -- all of which have come in a corner outfield spot. Jones should continue to see consistent run to close the campaign and be a decent source of powerfor fantasy managers as a result.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Homers twice during win

Jones went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI in Tuesday's 7-3 win over the Brewers. Jones had gone 11 games without a home run entering Tuesday but made up for the drought by sending two balls over the fence in the fourth and seventh innings. The 25-year-old outfielder is now slashing .333/.433/.667 with six RBI since the beginning of August and figures to continue seeing regular playing time while Kris Bryant (finger) is on the injured list.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Leads offense in win

Jones went 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 9-4 win over the Cardinals. Jones had gone seven games without an extra-base hit prior to Friday, while the 25-year-old's four hits matched his season high. He's slashing .278/.362/.483 with nine home runs, seven stolen bases, 25 RBI, 24 runs scored and nine doubles over 199 plate appearances. With Randal Grichuk traded to the Angels and Kris Bryant (finger) not close to returning, more playing time has opened up in the outfield for Jones.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Back in lineup Tuesday

Jones (cramps) is back in the lineup Tuesday versus the Padres. Jones will start in right field and bat sixth for the Rockies after making an early exit from Monday's series opener due to some mild cramping. The 25-year-old has posted an impressive .836 OPS with nine homers and seven steals through 50 major-league games this season.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Out of Monday's lineup

Jones (cramps) is not in Monday's lineup against the Padres. He left Sunday's game with cramping during an at-bat in the eighth inning, and while the removal was deemed precautionary, Jones is still absent Monday with a righty (Seth Lugo) on the hill for San Diego. Michael Toglia is starting in right field and batting sixth.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Exits with trainer

Jones was removed from Sunday's game against the Athletics in the ninth inning due to an apparent injury, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. Jones appeared to land awkwardly on first base while running out a grounder earlier in Sunday's matchup, and he was visited by a trainer at the end of the eighth inning before being replaced defensively to begin the ninth. He went 2-for-4 before leaving the game, and it's unclear whether he'll be available for Monday's series opener against the Padres.

  • Rockies' Nolan Jones: Power ticking back up

Jones went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk Monday against the Nationals. Jones entered the All-Star break with only one home run across his previous 22 games, however, he's cleared the fences four times in eight games since. Two of those have come away from Coors Field, including his two-run shot Monday. Despite the hot stretch, Jones is still striking out at a 44.8 percent clip in the same eight-game span. As a result, he'll likely remain a particularly streaky hitter across the final two months of the campaign.
