Player Outlook
Danny Coulombe didn't make Minnesota's Opening Day roster and was subsequently traded to Baltimore, where he quickly established himself as the team's top left-handed reliever. The 34-year-old doesn't throw very hard - he averaged just 91.1 mph on his sinker - but gave up only 2 hits on the pitch all season. Coulombe's wicked breaking balls were effective as well, with all three pitches inducing 30-plus percent whiff rates, including an 86 mph cutter that he threw 42.5% of the time. This led to career-best marks across multiple categories, including strikeouts (58), WHIP (1.11) and holds (21). The southpaw also ranked in the 87th percentile or better in average exit velocity allowed (85.6 mph, 96th percentile), hard-hit percentage (30.4%, 95th) and walk rate (5.6%, 87th). On the heels of a strong season, Coulombe projects as one of Baltimore's top setup men for 2024.

  • Orioles' Danny Coulombe: Lining up for setup role

Coulombe has allowed one run on four hits over three innings in Grapefruit League play this spring. Coulombe is one of the safer bets to earn a bullpen spot for the Orioles this spring. He is arguably the top left-hander in the bullpen and figures to fill a setup role after posting a 2.81 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 58:12 K:BB over 51.1 innings in similar usage last season. He also had two saves and 21 holds in his first year with the Orioles.

  • Orioles' Danny Coulombe: Avoids arbitration

Coulombe signed a one-year contract with the Orioles on Monday that includes a club option for 2025. The deal buys out the left-hander's final year of arbitration eligibility, and potentially, his first year of free agency. Coulombe was excellent for Baltimore in 2023, collecting a 2.81 ERA and 58:12 K:BB over 51.1 innings. He'll be a key setup man in the bullpen again in 2024.

Coulombe (5-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and struck out two over one inning, taking the loss Sunday versus the Red Sox. Two of Coulombe's three losses this season occurred over his last five appearances. He's allowed five runs (four earned) across his last 4.2 innings. Despite the late skid, he has a 2.81 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 58:12 K:BB with two saves and 21 holds through 51.1 innings this season. He'll be a key lefty in Baltimore's bullpen during the playoffs, though Yennier Cano and Tyler Wells are likely the top options for save chances.

Coulombe has arguably been the Orioles' most consistent lefty reliever this year with a 2.64 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 53:11 K:BB through 48.2 innings, and he's added two saves and 20 holds over 57 appearances. While he's struggled in the series, he should still be able to hold down a setup role the rest of the way.

He's now at a 2.37 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 27:4 K:BB through 19 innings while adding eight holds and two blown saves. He remains in the setup mix as part of the bridge to closer Felix Bautista.

  • Orioles' Danny Coulombe: Takes loss Saturday

Coulombe (1-1) allowed a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning Saturday versus Atlanta, taking the loss and a blown save. He didn't walk or strike out a batter. For the season, Coulombe is at a 3.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 16:3 K:BB across 12 innings, and he's picked up five holds. Despite the recent slump, he should still be part of the bridge to closer Felix Bautista when the Orioles are holding leads late.
