  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Battles sinus infection Wednesday

Clevinger said he was dealing with a sinus infection during his Cactus League start Wednesday against the Rangers, James Fegan of The Athletic reports. There was a concerning dip in his velocity readings, and Clevinger blamed it on the illness, saying he struggled to find an "extra gear" with his fastball. Still, the 32-year-old right-hander managed to induce a bevy of groundouts as he turned in five innings of one-run ball versus Texas. He should be in the clear to open the 2023 regular season as a starter for the White Sox.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Will make spring debut Saturday

Clevinger will make his Cactus League debut Saturday versus the Padres, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Major League Baseball announced Sunday that it declined to discipline Clevinger following an investigation into domestic violence charges. The right-hander has been with the White Sox throughout camp and will make his first game appearance this weekend.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Won't face discipline from MLB

Clevinger will not face discipline from Major League Baseball following an investigation into domestic violence charges, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Rogers also reports that Clevinger has voluntarily agreed to evaluations by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Player Association's treatment boards, and that he will comply with any recommendations. It was reported in January that the league was investigating Clevinger for allegations of domestic violence and child abuse that included physical, verbal and emotional abuse toward the mother of Clevinger's daughter as well as his daughter.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Not on administrative leave

Clevinger, who remains under MLB investigation after being accused of domestic violence in January, is eligible to participate in spring training, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. With the White Sox having not placed Clevinger on administrative leave, he looks on track to report to spring training this week as he begins preparations for the 2023 season. The 32-year-old, who signed with Chicago this offseason, could be available to pitch until the league completes its investigation.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Under MLB investigation

Clevinger is being investigated by MLB due to allegations of domestic violence and child abuse, Brittany Ghiroli and Katie Strang of The Athletic report. The allegations include physical, verbal and emotional abuse toward the mother of Clevinger's 10-month-old daughter. The White Sox were reportedly unaware of the allegations when they signed Clevinger to a one-year, $12 million deal in November. Details regarding a potential suspension for the righty have not yet been announced.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Links up with ChiSox

Clevinger and the White Sox came to terms on a one-year contract Sunday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. The former Cleveland starter will make his way back to the American League Central after spending the past two and a half seasons on the West Coast after being acquired by the Padres at the 2020 trade deadline. Clevinger missed the entire 2021 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he was cleared early in the 2022 campaign and staged a relatively smooth comeback from the procedure. Over 114 innings with the Friars, Clevinger compiled a 4.33 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 91:35 K:BB. Heading into his age-32 season, Clevinger should add some stability to the back end of an otherwise strong rotation that includes 2022 AL Cy Young Award runner-up Dylan Cease, Lance Lynn, Lucas Giolito and Michael Kopech (knee).

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Struggles in Game 4

Clevinger was unable to record an out during Saturday's 10-6 loss to the Phillies in Game 4 of the NLCS, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out zero. Clevinger's rough postseason continued Saturday night as he was relieved by Nick Martinez without recording an out in the first inning. The 31-year-old Clevinger was given four runs by his offense in the top of the first, but a leadoff single followed by a Rhys Hoskins homer, a walk and a Bryce Harper RBI double was enough to knock him from the game. Clevinger has now surrendered seven runs across two postseason starts while recording only eight outs in total.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Starting Game 1 of NLDS

Clevinger (illness) will start Game 1 of the NLDS against the Dodgers on Tuesday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Clevinger landed on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday but was able to travel with the team for the NL Wild Card Series after testing negative for the virus. The right-hander was kept off the team's wild-card roster but will take the mound to begin the NLDS on Tuesday. Over his final six starts of the regular season, Clevinger posted a 6.52 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 29 innings.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Not on wild-card roster

Clevinger (illness) was left off the wild-card roster Friday, Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports. Clevinger has been battling a non-COVID illness this week and will not be a part of the Padres' active roster as they take on the Mets in the wild-card round. The right-hander could join the active roster again if the Padres advance to the next round.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Traveling to New York

Clevinger (illness) tested negative for COVID-19 on Thursday and is traveling to New York to join the Padres ahead of Friday's wild-card game against the Mets, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Clevinger was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Wednesday, but he should be in the mix to be on the Padres' postseason roster now that he's tested negative. It's not yet clear whether the right-hander will be part of the team's playoff rotation, but he'll at least be an option to pitch as long as he continues to test negative.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Goes on IL with illness

The Padres placed Clevinger on the injured list Wednesday with an illness. San Diego didn't specify whether Clevinger was moved to the 15-day injured list or the COVID-19-related IL. If it's the latter, Clevinger would be eligible to return for the Padres' wild-card round series with the Mets, though it's unclear if he would have been included in the team's playoff rotation even if he hadn't fallen ill. Clevinger had been on track to start Wednesday's regular-season finale against the Giants, but that assignment will instead go to Craig Stammen. The 31-year-old righty will finish the regular season with a 7-7 record, 4.33 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 91:35 K:BB over 114.1 innings.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Not starting Wednesday

Clevinger won't start Wednesday's game against the Giants as initially planned, with the Padres instead having Craig Stammen take the hill for the regular-season finale, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Considering Stammen hasn't covered more than two innings in any of his appearances in the majors or minors this season, he'll likely be serving as more of an opener than a traditional starter. The Padres haven't indicated that Clevinger will be available as a bulk reliever or if the team will rely on a cadre of bullpen arms to cover the remaining innings once Stammen exits.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Short start on tap

Clevinger is scheduled to start Wednesday against the Giants, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. The 31-year-old seemingly made his final start of the regular season with a quality start Saturday against the White Sox, but he'll take the mound Wednesday on three days rest for a short tune-up ahead of the playoffs. Clevinger won't be included in the Padres' potential rotation plans until the NLDS, and it's unclear if he'll be included on the roster as a bullpen option for the wild-card round.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Secures seventh win

Clevinger (7-7) allowed a run on three hits and struck out three over six innings to earn the win Saturday over the White Sox. Clevinger was efficient, needing just 66 pitches (48 strikes) to earn a quality start. He's alternated between strong and shaky over his last four starts, though he's been rewarded with wins in his two good outings in that span. For the year, the right-hander owns a 4.33 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 91:35 K:BB across 114.1 innings through 23 outings (22 starts). This was likely his last start of the regular season, and it's unclear what his role will be in the postseason in the likely event the Padres clinch a playoff berth.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Lasts four innings Sunday

Clevinger did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk over four innings against Colorado. He struck out two. After making it through at least five innings in his last three starts, Clevinger was chased after allowing five runs over four innings Sunday. He has now allowed 20 runs over 23 innings in his last five starts, ballooning his ERA to 4.49, up from 3.59 on Aug. 29. He will attempt to get back on track in his next start, tentatively scheduled against the White Sox this weekend.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Gets back on track

Clevinger (6-7) earned the win during Tuesday's 5-0 victory over St. Louis, allowing three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 5.2 scoreless innings. Clevinger wore down as the start progressed -- he permitted multiple baserunners in each of his final two frames -- but was able to avoid any big blows and post his first scoreless start in 14 turns. A healthy 12 swinging strikes led to only three strikeouts as the 31-year-old has failed to eclipse four whiffs in any of his last nine starts. Clevinger sports a 4.23 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 86 strikeouts in 104.1 innings across 21 games and 20 starts. He's projected to pitch again this week Sunday in Colorado.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Knocked around by Mariners

Clevinger (5-7) was charged with the loss after he pitched five innings, giving up six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two versus the Mariners on Wednesday. Clevinger struggled with the long ball Wednesday, surrendering all six runs on three homers by the Mariners. Most notably, Carlos Santana busted the game wide-open with a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving Seattle a 6-0 lead. Clevinger has now produced three consecutive disappointing starts, giving up 15 runs over 13.1 innings while allowing six homers over that span. The difficult stretch has raised his ERA from 3.59 to 4.47 over 98.2 frames in 20 starts this season.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Surrenders four runs in no-decision

Clevinger didn't factor into the decision during Friday's 5-4 win against the Dodgers, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts in five innings. Clevinger permitted the bulk of the damage in the third inning, allowing two runs on four baserunners while also serving up solo shots in the first and fourth. The 31-year-old tossed 60 of 90 pitches for strikes with 13 of the swinging variety, though he failed to surpass four strikeouts for the seventh straight start. During the stretch, Clevinger has surrendered 22 runs in 33.1 innings while posting 2-3 record. He carries a 4.13 ERA and 1.19 WHIP into his next start, projected to come midweek in Seattle.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Roughed up in fourth inning

Clevinger (5-6) took the loss during Sunday's 9-4 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Clevinger permitted a single baserunner in each of his first three frames before falling apart in the fourth, allowing five baserunners and two runs, prompting his removal. Reliever Luis Garcia let all three inherited runners score, giving Clevinger his first start of surrendering more than three runs in his last five turns. The 31-year-old still possesses quality numbers with a 3.96 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 77 strikeouts in 88.2 innings, though a 4.47 FIP indicates he's been slightly fortunate. He's currently tabbed for a rematch with Los Angeles this weekend.

  • Padres' Mike Clevinger: Done in by long ball

Clevinger (4-5) allowed two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out four over six innings, taking the loss versus the Guardians on Tuesday. Clevinger pitched well on the whole, but he allowed solo home runs to Oscar Gonzalez and Andres Gimenez. That was enough to tag the right-hander with the loss, though this was his first quality start in four outings. Clevinger has had some uneven efforts of late, but he still sports a solid 3.59 ERA with a 1.16 WHIP and 70:26 K:BB through 80.1 innings across 16 appearances (15 starts). He's tentatively lined up for a road start in San Francisco next week, which could be a two-start week for the 31-year-old.
