White Sox's Nik Turley: Outrighted to alternate camp
Turley cleared waivers and was outrighted to alternate camp Thursday.
Turley was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Tuesday, and he'll report to the team's alternate training site in Schaumburg after going unclaimed on waivers. He made 25 relief appearances for the Pirates last year, but Turley is unlikely to pitch in high-leverage situations if he's called up at some point in 2021.

Chicago removed Turley from the 40-man roster to clear spot for Jake Lamb, who is a candidate to fill a strong-side platoon role at designated hitter. Turley likely would have been in line to serve as a low-leverage reliever in the White Sox bullpen if he had remained with the team for Opening Day.

The 31-year-old was recently waived by the A's and didn't make it through the waiver wire unclaimed. Turley appeared in 25 games for the Pirates last season and had a 4.98 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB over 21.2 innings.

Athletics' Nik Turley: Acquired by Athletics
Turley was traded from the Pirates to the Athletics on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Oakland picked Turley up for cheap after he was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh earlier in the week. It's tough to get too excited about a 31-year-old with a 7.78 ERA in 39.1 career MLB innings, but he at least throws left-handed, which could help his chances of winning a relief role.

Turley threw 21.2 innings of relief for the Pirates last season with mediocre results, posting a 4.98 ERA, a 21.7 percent strikeout rate and a 12.0 percent walk rate. The 31-year-old lefty may not be a particularly attractive option on the waiver wire. Troy Stokes was claimed off waivers in a corresponding move.

Turley (0-3) allowed three runs on two hits and hit a batter in one inning in a loss to Cleveland on Sunday.
Turley was responsible for Cleveland's three-run, go-ahead rally in the seventh inning. The southpaw had strung together 4.1 scoreless innings over his previous five outings. Turley ends the season with a 4.98 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 21.2 innings across 25 appearances.

Turley (0-1) gave up a run on a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Monday versus the Brewers.
Turley allowed a double to Ben Gamel, and then intentionally walked Avisail Garcia before Chris Stratton entered from the bullpen. Stratton gave up an RBI single to Orlando Arcia, which was enough to stick Turley with the loss. The 30-year-old Turley has allowed three runs over his last 1.2 innings, raising his ERA to 4.85 with a 1.23 WHIP and 10 strikeouts in 13 innings this season.

Pirates' Nik Turley: Nabs save
Turley did not allow a baserunner and struck out one across a scoreless inning to earn the save in the second game of the Pirates' doubleheader Thursday against the Cardinals.
The Pirates won each game of the doubleheader in close fashion, and Richard Rodriguez was used in the first game. That gave Turley the opportunity to earn his first career save. Turley has a 3.18 ERA, but a 9:7 to K:BB across 11.1 innings for the season.

Turley (elbow) was shipped to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, John Dreker of PiratesProspects.com reports.
Turley was placed on the 60-day disabled list June 29 with a left elbow sprain, and he failed to pitch again in 2018 following the move. He'll report to Triple-A in a paper move for the time being but is expected to become a minor-league free agent during the offseason.

Turley had been suspended for 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. He'll now remain off the roster until his elbow heals. When he does return to action, he won't be a compelling fantasy asset, as he's a 28-year-old with just 17.2 career major-league innings and an 11.21 ERA.

Turley, who was recently claimed off waivers from the Twins, will begin serving his suspension at the start of the season. He spent most of the 2017 campaign with Triple-A Rochester, posting an impressive 2.66 ERA and 79:22 K:BB across 67.2 innings of work (18 total appearances, 10 starts). His success didn't carry over to the majors, however, as he posted an unsightly 11.21 ERA and 2.15 WHIP across 17.2 big-league frames. The 28-year-old will likely serve as organizational bullpen depth when he returns from his suspension in the second half of 2018.

Turley was claimed off waivers by the Pirates on Monday, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Turley spent most of the 2017 season at Triple-A Rochester as a member of the Twins organization. Over 18 games, 10 of which were starts, he put together a 2.66 ERA and impressive 28.9 percent K-rate. However, his success didn't translate to the majors. Across 10 games (17.2 innings) with the big club he was knocked for an 11.21 ERA and 2.15 WHIP.

The Twins had designated Turley as their 26th man for Monday's doubleheader with the White Sox, so it was fully expected that he'd report back to Rochester at the conclusion of the twin bill. The Twins optioned Turley to Triple-A Rochester, but subsequently recalled him to serve as the 26th man for Monday's doubleheader with the White Sox.
In order to facilitate the addition of Game 1 starter Tim Melville to the active roster, Turley was optioned in what amounted to a procedural move. Though Turley will stick around with the big club for now, he'll likely be bound for Rochester once the doubleheader is completed, as either Melville or Dillon Gee -- the Game 2 starter Monday -- will assume the long-relief role that had previously fallen to Turley.

Turley was summoned back to the big club to offer a fresh bullpen arm for Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Indians after the Twins' bullpen pitched five innings in Game 1. With Dillon Gee unavailable after tossing 2.2 innings during the first game, Turley should offer length out of the bullpen. He has struggled during his brief time in the majors this season, posting a 16.39 ERA and 2.89 WHIP through 9.1 innings.

He'll head back to the minors after another disastrous outing Thursday in which he failed to get out of the first inning while allowing five earned runs to the White Sox. Minnesota will fill his roster spot with a corresponding move Friday.
