Cobb (hip/elbow/shoulder) has been held back from throwing for the last few days due to soreness in his right shoulder, and he is set to see a team doctor Friday night, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.comreports. Cobb was shifted to the 60-day IL on April 20 to give him more time to recover from his multiple ailments. He underwent left hip surgery in the offseason and was progressing through his rehab assignment following spring training, but he has suffered another setback with right shoulder soreness this time. Cobb's visit with the team doctor Friday night should give him and the Giants a better idea of the next steps forward in his rehab schedule.... See More ... See Less

Giants' Alex Cobb: Shifted to 60-day IL
Cobb (hip/elbow/shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list by the Giants on Saturday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Mitch White. Cobb had been poised for a quicker-than-expected return from offseason hip surgery, but he's been slowed this month but elbow and shoulder issues. He doesn't have structural issues and has already resumed throwing, but being moved to the 60-day IL will allow Cobb a more deliberate pace after he was probably rushed a bit the first time around. The right-hander now won't be eligible to return until late May.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Set to throw from flat ground
Cobb (hip) had a clean MRI on his shoulder and will throw from flat ground Friday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Cobb has dealt with both elbow and shoulder pain while working his way back from hip surgery. However, he's now set to resume throwing for the first time since April 1. Given his inability to ramp up consistently, Cobb will likely need several weeks before he's ready to return to a big-league mound.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Dealing with cranky shoulder
The Giants announced Thursday that Cobb (hip) is dealing with mild shoulder irritation, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Cobb is primarily recovering from left hip surgery that occurred shortly after the end of the 2023 season. During the ramp-up process, he's dealt with both elbow and shoulder issues that have slowed his progress. Cobb described his shoulder as "cranky" but noted that he doesn't expect his return timetable to be affected significantly.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Pauses throwing for elbow issue
Cobb (hip) said Friday he's been shut down from throwing for a few days due to some flexor tendon inflammation, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. It doesn't appear to be a serious concern since Cobb is expected to resume throwing Monday, but any arm issue is a notable development as he makes his way back from offseason hip surgery. The 36-year-old's return timeline will be pushed back at least a week, which likely means he won't make his season debut until sometime in May.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Threw bullpen session Sunday
Cobb (hip) continued his rehab process, throwing a bullpen session in Arizona on Sunday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Cobb made a five-inning rehab start Thursday and then followed it up with another throwing session a few days later. The right-hander is eligible to be activated from the 15-day injured list April 9, and while he appears to be built up, it's unclear how many exhibition outings the club wants to give Cobb to make up for missing spring training.... Giants' Alex Cobb: Throws five innings Thursday
Cobb (hip) threw five innings in a minor-league game Thursday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. It's unclear how many starts the Giants want Cobb to make while he's on a rehab assignment, but the fact he's already built up to five innings suggests he may be able to make his regular-season debut sooner than initially thought. The 36-year-old righty will be eligible to come off the injured list April 9.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Moves to 15-day IL
The Giants placed Cobb (hip) on the 15-day injured list Thursday. After undergoing left hip surgery Oct. 31, Cobb wasn't able to heal swiftly enough to earn a spot on the Giants' Opening Day roster, but he's still coming along far quicker than his initial six-month recovery timeline. Cobb threw 40 pitches in a minor-league spring training game last Friday and looks like he should be ready to make a rehab start with one of the Giants' affiliates in the near future or continue building up his pitch count at extended spring training in Arizona. He'll need at least a few outings before he's ready to handle a typical starter's workload with the Giants, but he looks like he could be a candidate to make his season debut in late April or early May.... Giants' Alex Cobb: Throwing 40 pitches in minors game
Cobb (hip) will throw 40 pitches in a minor-league game Friday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. He had been slated for his Cactus League debut Friday, but the Giants have elected to have Cobb throw in a more controlled setting instead. A stint on the injured list to begin the season is still expected for the veteran right-hander, but it's looking like he could be ready by mid-April.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Making Cactus League debut Friday
Cobb (hip) is scheduled to throw three innings during one of Friday's split-squad Cactus League games against the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chroniclereports. The veteran right-hander struck out five in two hitless frames during a minor-league spring game Saturday and is now scheduled for his first Cactus League outing. Cobb underwent hip surgery in October and was initially expected to make his return during the middle of the summer, but he's significantly ahead of schedule in his recovery. A stint on the injured list to begin the season is still the expectation, but at this rate, Cobb could be ramped up for his season debut just a few weeks into the season.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Sharp in minor-league outing
Cobb (hip) struck out five over two hitless innings in a minor-league game Saturday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Cobb threw 18 of his 27 pitches for strikes in what was his first game appearance since he had left hip surgery last October. The veteran right-hander's next outing figures to come during Cactus League play next week. A timetable for Cobb rejoining the Giants' rotation isn't clear yet, but a return before the end of April is looking distinctly possible.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Appearing in minor-league game
Cobb (hip) will throw two innings in a minor-league game Saturday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. The Giants had left open the possibility that Cobb would make his Cactus League debut that day, but they've elected to have him pitch in a more controlled environment instead. Cobb has made a rapid recovery from hip surgery and looks to be on track to rejoin the Giants' rotation sometime in April.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Cleared for live batting practice
Cobb (hip) will throw a live batting practice session Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Cobb continues to make good progress from last October's left hip surgery and is now expected back much sooner than initially anticipated. The Giants have not yet offered a clear timeline for Cobb's season debut, but president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi did say last weekend that the righty could be back "relatively soon into the year."... Giants' Alex Cobb: May have shorter absence
Giants GM Farhan Zaidi said Sunday that Cobb (hip) could be available "relatively soon into the year," Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. It's not exactly an explicit return timeline, but it's still a major improvement on the mid-summer return that was the previous expectation. Cobb underwent surgery on his left hip in late October, and his recovery has apparently gone better than anticipated. The 36-year-old has already resumed throwing off a mound and could soon be cleared to face live hitters.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Throws off mound
Cobb (hip) threw 12 pitches off a mound Sunday and will have another session Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Cobb had left hip surgery in October and isn't expected to be available until the middle of the season. Previous reports indicated he may begin facing hitters in spring training, but he's still got a long way to go before he can push for a rotation spot. With Cobb out early in the season, Tristan Beck and Keaton Winn are considered frontrunners to round out the Giants' rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Nearing mound work
Cobb (hip) said Wednesday that he hopes to be cleared to throw off a mound soon, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Coming back from October left hip surgery, Cobb began throwing on flat ground a few weeks ago and is eager to take the next step. The goal is to progress to facing hitters before the end of spring training with an eye toward rejoining the Giants' rotation before the All-Star break, although any timetable at this juncture is tentative.... Giants' Alex Cobb: Begins throwing program
Cobb (hip) began a throwing program Thursday, Evan Webeck of The Mercury News reports. Cobb played catch from 60 feet in what was his first bit of throwing since he underwent left hip surgery in October. The veteran right-hander is hopeful of rejoining the Giants' rotation prior to the All-Star break, although there's no clear timetable for him at this point. Cobb held a 3.87 ERA and 131:37 K:BB over 151.1 frames for San Francisco in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Hopes to begin throwing soon
Cobb (hip) hopes to begin a flat-ground throwing program in the next few days, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Cobb underwent surgery in late October to repair a torn labrum and remove three bone chips from in his left hip. He's been keeping his arm in shape by throwing plyo balls from his knees and hopes to play catch soon. Cobb thinks he'll be able to return sooner than expected, although there's no clear timetable for when it might happen, with the right-hander saying only that "I fully expect to be back in the first half." The 36-year-old was a first-time All-Star in 2023 after posting a 2.91 ERA in the first half, but he stumbled to a 5.25 ERA after the break while dealing with nagging hip pain.... See More ... Giants' Alex Cobb: Scheduled for surgery
Cobb will undergo left hip surgery Tuesday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Cobb has been attempting to rehab his hip injury without going under the knife, but the team has since announced that he'll undergo a procedure Tuesday to repair his labrum and hip impingement issues, per Shea. The right-hander is expected to need around six months to return to the mound, meaning he'd miss at least the first month of the 2024 campaign. The Giants were expected to pick up his $10 million club option for the upcoming season, though this setback will certainly complicate the organization's decision.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Alex Cobb: Hip injury ends regular season
Cobb was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a left hip impingement. Cobb has been dealing with a nagging hip issue throughout the second half and it flared up on him during Tuesday's start against the Diamondbacks. He is done for the remainder of the regular season, although the Giants have not ruled out the possibility that he could return for the playoffs, should they qualify. Kyle Harrison will absorb Cobb's rotation spot.... See More ... See Less
