The Mets and Cubs have talked about a potential trade involving Chicago catcher Geovany Soto, wrote the New York Daily News' Andy Martino.
- A deal isn't likely, according to "a baseball official with direct knowledge of the situation," Martino reported.
- Soto, 29, has spent his entire career in the Cubs' organization, and is currently having his worst big-league season. His .623 OPS is down from .721 in 2011, and .890 in 2010.
- The Mets have been linked to a number of catchers over the past few weeks, including Colorado's Ramon Hernandez and Boston's Kelly Shoppach.
- Josh Thole is the Mets' current number-one catcher, and he's batting .271/.322/.335 in 70 games and 218 at-bats, with one home run and 13 RBI.
- The Mets are reluctant to pay a heavy price for any catcher they acquire because they're comfortable with Thole as their everyday catcher in 2013. Any catcher they acquire will complement Thole, not take his job, reported Martino.
- Soto is earning $4.3 million this season and is arbitration eligible heading into next year. He'll be a free agent after the 2013 season.
