Quantrill pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and five walks while striking out four batters in Colorado's 2-1 extra-inning win in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader with the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision. Quantrill didn't have his best command Sunday, walking a season-high five batters while throwing 62 of his 108 total pitches for strikes. In the end though, he was able to notch his first scoreless outing of the year while extending his quality start streak to three outings in a row. After a slow start to the 2024 campaign, Quantrill now owns a 4.33 ERA and 1.48 WHIP with 15 strikeouts over 27 innings in five starts this season. The 29-year-old's next projected start is expected to be Saturday at home versus the Astros.... See More ... See Less

Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Gets no support against PHI
Quantrill didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with one strikeout in six innings against the Phillies. Quantrill notched his second straight quality start and yielded fewer than three runs for the first time in 2023. Despite making three of his first four starts away from Coors Field, Quantrill owns a 5.57 ERA and an 11:7 K:BB through 21.0 innings. After their series in Philadelphia, the Rockies will play their next nine games at home, with Quantrill tentatively lined up to face the Mariners on Sunday before seeing either the Padres or Astros in his following start.... Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Goes six innings in loss
Quantrill (0-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks in six innings. He struck out six. Quantrill struck out a season-high six batters in his first quality start of the year, but he fell victim to the long ball, allowing home runs to Corbin Carroll and Randal Grichuk. Both of those home runs came in the first two innings, as Quantrill was able to settle in and throw four shutout frames afterwards. It's been a rough go early for the 29-year-old and he'll take a 7.20 ERA and 1.73 WHIP into his next start on the road against Philadelphia.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Struggles in second start
Quantrill allowed four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Wednesday. Quantrill had control issues in the outing, though most of his struggles came in the second inning, when he walked three batters and gave up all four of the runs against him. He at least managed to retire five of the final six batters he faced, but he was pulled after the fourth frame having thrown 90 pitches. Quantrill's tenure in Colorado has not gotten off to a good beginning, as he's given up nine earned runs across his first nine innings and has posted a 4:5 K:BB along with a 2.00 WHIP.... Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Tagged for five runs
Quantrill (0-1) struck out one and yielded five runs on nine hits and one walk over five-plus innings in Friday's 7-3 loss to Arizona. Quantrill served up back-to-back home runs to Lourdes Gurriel and Christian Walker in the first inning. Through five frames Quantrill had allowed just three runs, but he was charged with two more after his exit in the sixth when the Rockies bullpen allowed two inherited runners to cross the plate. The 29-year-old righty posted a disappointing 5.24 ERA across 99.2 innings in 2023, and his outlook doesn't seem much better in 2024. Quantrill is currently lined up for a road matchup with the Cubs next week.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Rockies debut set
Quantrill will start the second game of the regular season against the Diamondbacks, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports. Quantrill was hit hard in his final outing of spring training, but he's still set to follow Kyle Freeland in the rotation as the Rockies' second starter. Positively, he's worked 4.2 innings in each of his last two starts, so he should be able to handle a full workload to begin the campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Looks good in ramp-up
Quantrill allowed four hits and one walk while striking out three across 4.2 scoreless innings in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Giants. Quantrill made his longest appearance of the spring and tallied his first strikeout of the exhibition season. Despite the lack of swing and miss, he's been effective, allowing only three earned runs across 10.2 frames. Quantrill will be relied upon as a key part of the Rockies' rotation, though he's likely to find consistent success hard to come by given his contact-heavy approach at Coors Field.... See More ... Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Efficient first spring appearance
Quantrill completed two innings while allowing two hits and one run with no strikeouts or walks in his Cactus League debut with the Rockies on Saturday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Quantrill will serve a key role in the Rockies' rotation during the regular season after being acquired by the team this offseason. He had a strong debut with the club, focusing on pumping his splitter and sinker into the strike zone. His ability to use those pitches consistently will be a key to his success, as he'll want to keep the ball on the ground while pitching in one of the more hitter-friendly home parks in the league.... Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Avoids arbitration with Rockies
The Rockies and Quantrill avoided arbitration Wednesday by agreeing to a one-year, $6.55 million contract, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Colorado acquired Quantrill from Cleveland back in November and it has now locked him into a contract for the 2024 campaign. The right-hander posted a disappointing 5.24 ERA and 58:35 K:BB over 99.2 innings in 2023 but held a career 3.54 ERA heading into the season. Quantrill will open 2024 in the Rockies' rotation but won't be a desirable fantasy option.... See More ... See Less -
Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Acquired by Rockies via trade
The Rockies acquired Quantrill from the Guardians in exchange for Kody Huff on Friday. Quantrill had been designated for assignment by Cleveland earlier in the week but quickly landed in another organization, and he should slide right into Colorado's rotation. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 5.24 ERA and 58:35 K:BB over 99.2 innings in 2023 but boasted a career 3.54 ERA coming into last season. Quantrill is a sensible addition by the Rockies, but landing in Colorado virtually eliminates whatever fantasy appeal he might have had in 2024.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Pushed off 40-man roster
Quantrill was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Tuesday. Qunatrill was a reliable member of Cleveland's starting rotation between 2021-22 before stumbling to a 5.24 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 58:35 K:BB over 99.2 innings in 2023. The 28-year-old right-hander can elect free agency if he passes through waivers unclaimed and would actually probably do quite well for himself in this pitching-thin market.... See More ... Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Shaky in fourth win
Quantrill (4-7) earned the win Friday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk over five innings against the Tigers. He struck out three. Quantrill was knocked around and yielded the most runs and hits of any of his September starts. However, even with the less-than-stellar outing, the 28-year-old righty ends the month with a solid 2.75 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 20:13 K:BB over 32.2 innings. Quantrill turned his season around dramatically, as he entered September with a 6.45 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 38:22 K:BB over 67 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Goes just four innings Saturday
Quantrill (3-7) took the loss against Baltimore on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits and four walks while striking out four batters over four innings. That Quantrill was able to escape the outing with just one run charged to his ledger is pretty impressive given that he allowed nine baserunners over four frames. Baltimore left eight runners on base while Quantrill was in the contest, including five over his final two innings. The right-hander was lifted after 93 pitches, snapping a streak of four straight outings during which he went at least 5.2 frames. Quantrill figures to have one more regular-season start left, which tentatively lines up to come next weekend in Detroit.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Let down by bullpen Thursday
Quantrill pitched six scoreless innings against the Angels on Thursday, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six batters in a no-decision. Quantrill was excellent in the outing, holding Los Angeles to three singles and allowing multiple baserunners in just one frame. The right-hander looked to be in line to have his seven-start winless streak snapped when the Guardians put up two runs in the half-inning following his departure, but Emmanuel Clase blew a save opportunity in the ninth to hold Quantrill to a no-decision. Despite the disappointing finish, Cleveland has to be happy with how Quantrill has pitched since returning from a lengthy stay on the injured list Sept. 1. In two outings since rejoining the rotation, he's posted two quality starts while allowing two runs on five hits over 12 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Tosses quality start
Quantrill did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks over six innings in the Guardians' win over Tampa Bay. He struck out two. Quantrill was on an MLB mound for the first time since July 5 and settled in nicely after allowing a run in each of the first two innings. It was the first time he completed at least six innings since May 13. The 28-year-old lowered his season ERA to 6.16 with a 40:25 K:BB through 73 innings. Quantrill is currently projected for a road outing against the Angels next week.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Activated for return Friday
Quantrill (shoulder) was activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Friday versus the Rays, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Quantrill is back in the rotation for Cleveland after missing nearly two full months due to shoulder inflammation. The 28-year-old right-hander had posted a rough 6.45 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 38:22 K:BB in 67 innings (13 starts) prior to the lengthy IL stint.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Likely to rejoin rotation this week
Quantrill (shoulder) is expected to return from the 15-day injured list Sept. 1 and will likely start in the Guardians' series opener with the Rays that day, Julia Kreuz of MLB.com reports. While Cleveland hasn't confirmed that Quantrill will be activated this week, the club already reopened a spot for him in the rotation by designating right-hander Noah Syndergaard for assignment Sunday. The transaction came after Quantrill looked sharp in his fourth and final rehab start Saturday, when he struck out six and allowed two runs on five hits and no walks over 7.1 innings in a win for Triple-A Columbus. Th 28-year-old tossed 89 pitches in the outing and should be fully stretched out as he steps back into the Cleveland rotation during the final month of the season.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Making one more rehab start
Quantrill (shoulder) will make a fourth and final rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Columbus before being reinstated from the 15-day injured list, MLB.com reports. Though Quantrill looks to be just about fully stretched out for starting duty after he built up to 5.1 innings and 84 pitches his last time out for Columbus on Aug. 20, both he and the Guardians determined that he could benefit from one more tune-up outing in the minors prior to being activated from the IL. Despite increasing his workload in his previous start for Columbus, Quantrill's results (three strikeouts, six earned runs allowed on six hits and three walks) still left something to be desired. Quantrill will be targeting 95 pitches in Saturday's outing and will hope to show sharper command before getting the green light to rejoin the Cleveland rotation. He'll tentatively line up for a Sept. 1 return from the IL and could bump either of Xzavion Curry or Noah Syndergaard from the rotation once reinstated.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Serves up three HRs in rehab start
Quantrill (shoulder) tossed 5.1 innings and struck out three while giving up six earned runs on six hits and three walks in his third rehab start Sunday for Triple-A Columbus. The Guardians were likely hoping for a sharper outing for Quantrill on Sunday in what's expected to be his final rehab start, but despite his struggles, the right-hander still managed to build up to 84 pitches (54 strikes). Assuming Quantrill checked out fine physically following the start for Columbus, he'll likely be activated from the 15-day injured list over the upcoming weekend to make his next appearance with the Guardians during their series in Toronto. Unless the Guardians elect to expand their rotation to six men, either Noah Syndergaard or Xzavion Curry would seemingly be most at risk of ceding his starting role to Quantrill.... See More ... Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Third rehab start Sunday
Quantrill (shoulder) is expected to throw around 85 pitches Sunday in his third minor-league rehab start, Joe Noga of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Quantrill got roughed up in his rehab debut Aug. 9 with Triple-A Columbus before bouncing back to work 3.2 innings of one-run ball this past Tuesday with Double-A Akron. If all goes well Sunday on the farm, he should be able to return to the Guardians' rotation late next week. The 28-year-old right-hander has been sidelined since July 6 due to shoulder inflammation.... See More ... See Less
