Pac-12 scoreboard

Oregon State 27, No. 19 UCLA 20: QB Sean Mannion threw for a career-high 379 yards as the Beavers upset No. 19 UCLA 27-20. The win over the Bruins (3-1, 0-1 in Pac-12) comes on the heels of Oregon State's Week 2 win over then-No. 13 Wisconsin and gives the Beavers (2-0, 1-0) consecutive wins over ranked opponents for the first time since their 2000 Fiesta Bowl season. Receivers Brandin Cooks and Markus Wheaton were Mannion's favorite targets as they combined for 15 catches for 325 yards and two touchdowns. Colorado 35, Washington State 34: Colorado (1-3, 1-0) overcame a 31-14 deficit with 7:22 left in the fourth quarter to shock Washington State 35-34 in Pullman, Wash. Buffaloes QB Jordan Webb scored on a 4-yard draw with 11 seconds left to give Colorado the win. Webb was 29 of 43 for 346 yards and two touchdowns. The junior also had two rushing touchdowns. Cougar (2-2, 0-1) quarterback Connor Halliday threw for 404 yards in the loss.

No. 13 USC 27, Cal 9: USC QB Matt Barkley played an average game Saturday, but that's all that's all the Trojans (3-1, 1-1) needed to beat Cal 27-9. It was USC's ninth-straight win over the Golden Bears (1-3, 0-1). Barkely threw two interceptions, but he also had two touchdown passes in a game that USC never trailed. Cal trimmed the Trojan's 17-3 halftime lead to a score in the third quarter, but USC outscored the Bears 10-0 in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Barkley was 22 of 34 for 192 yards. Half of Barkley's completions went to sophomore WR Marqise Lee, who continued his impressive season with 11 catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns. (For more on the game, check out CBSSports.com's Eye on College Football blog here).

Arizona State 37, Utah 7: The Sun Devils outgained Utah 512-209 in in a dominating performance. QB Taylor Kelly threw for a career-high 326 yards and three touchdowns for Arizona State (3-1, 1-0). Kelly threw touchdown passes of 38, 10 and 13 yards. K Alex Garoutte took over in the second half, hitting field goals of 22, 22 and 43. Utah is 2-2 and 0-1 in the Pac-12.

No. 3 Oregon 49, No. 22 Arizona 0: For once, the Oregon offense wasn't the story. The Ducks' defense shined Saturday night as Oregon (4-0, 1-0) shutout the nation's 12th highest-scoring offense. QB Marcus Mariota threw two touchdown passes and K Rob Beard hit two field goals. In his first start against a ranked opponent, Mariota threw for 263 yards and an interception. Arizona (3-1, 0-1) totaled 329 yards and had its chances to score, but couldn't score despite five trips to the red zone.

Play of the weekend: The play of the weekend is actually two plays that came from one team. Trailing Washington State 31-14 in the fourth quarter, Colorado needed some big plays to get back in the game and they got them from QB Webb and RB Tony Jones. First, Webb threw a 70-yard TD pass to Nick Kasa that cut the Cougar lead to 31-21. Jones followed that on Colorado's next possession with an 84-yard touchdown run that pulled the Buffaloes within 31-28. Colorado won 35-34.

He said what? "Everyone doubted us. I saw the blogs, I saw the ESPN analysts saying UCLA was going to win. Our defense is real," Oregon State CB Jordan Poyer after the Beavers upset No. 19 UCLA.

RapidReports offensive star of the day: QB Webb, Colorado. The Buffaloes got their first win Saturday thanks to Webb. The junior threw two touchdown passes and rushed for two more as Colorado upset Washington State 35-34. Webb threw for a career-high 346 yards in the win.

RapidReports defensive star of the day: The Oregon State defense. If you want your Heisman hopes to die, play Oregon State. Two weeks ago, the Beaver defense ended Montee Ball's Heisman campaign before it started when they limited the Wisconsin running back to 61 yards. On Saturday, the Beavers did the same to UCLA RB Johnathan Franklin. Franklin came into the game as the nation's leading rusher (180.3 ypg), but was limited to 45 yards.

His seat is getting uncomfortable: Mike Leach, Washington State. Leach isn't actually on the hot seat, but he did have the worst day of any coach in the Pac-12. The Cougars blew a 31-14 fourth-quarter lead to previously winless Colorado. This is the same Buffaloes team that lost 69-14 to Fresno State last week and lost to FCS Sacramento State in Week 2. WSU will have to get over the loss to Colorado quickly, they play Oregon in Seattle next week.

A possible spot on the bench for: QB Zach Maynard, Cal. After picking apart Ohio State last week, Maynard fell to earth against USC. The Golden Bears' quarterback was inconsistent against the Trojans, finishing 18 of 33 for 173 yards. Maynard also threw two interceptions, including a crucial one at USC's 14 when Cal trailed 17-9. To be fair, Maynard's offensive line wasn't much help as the senior was sacked six times and under constant pressure.

Why you care about these three stat lines:

  1. Oregon State stuffed UCLA running back Johnathan Franklin: Franklin, the nation's top running back, came into Saturday' game averaging 180.3 yards per carry. However, he found no success against the Oregon State defense. The Beavers limited Franklin to 45 yards, two weeks after holding Wisconsin star RB Montee Ball to 61 yards. The statement here: Don't plan on running on the Beavers this year.
  2. The Oregon defense shuts out Arizona: The Ducks went into Saturday night's game allowing 24.3 points per game and they gave that up to teams like Tennessee Tech and Fresno State. Oregon proved that that their defense might be for real by shutting out the nation's 12th-ranked scoring offense, Arizona (46.4 ppg).
  3. Washington State QB Connor Halliday throws for 404 yards: WSU started the season with Jeff Tuel at quarterback, but after an injury, Halliday was given the starting nod. Halliday has been impressive in two starts, averaging 391 passing yards per game. Halliday is beginning to grasp coach Mike Leach's Air Raid offense, which makes the Cougars a dangerous opponent.

Key number: 74. Oregon State's 27-20 win over UCLA on Saturday was the 74th victory of coach Mike Riley's career, tying him with Lon Stiner (1933-48) for the most wins in school history.
