No. 1 -- Can the Spartans pass effectively? With the losses of three-year starting QB Kirk Cousins and his three top WRs, the Spartans needed to establish some chemistry between Cousins‘ replacement, Andrew Maxwell, and his receivers. But Maxwell got hurt midway through the spring, as did projected go-to guy Tony Lippett. No one else emerged from the WR pack during scrimmages or the spring game. The player who made the longest reception in the spring game was starting CB Johnny Adams. No. 2 -- Who will start on the OL? With OT Skyler Burkland and OG Blake Treadwell returning from injuries that sidelined them most of last season, along with the emergence of redshirt freshman C Jack Allen, coach Mark Dantonio feels he has seven starters along the O-line. RG Chris McDonald and RT Fou Fonoti seem safe but the other starting jobs remain undecided. “How you play in August is going to determine who starts in the fall,” Dantonio said. No. 3 -- Who are the leaders? The Spartans had a three-year captain in Cousins and two other strong leaders in OG Joel Foreman and FS Trenton Robinson last season. Dantonio is still waiting for this season’s leaders to assert themselves. He’s hoping that upperclassmen like Maxwell, Fonoti and LB Chris Norman will take control of the locker room. “There is a void in leadership,” he said.
