Former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino hasn't been completely out of football since being fired by the Razorbacks in April. Petrino has been staying busy by consulting with football teams, including Cal, according to a story by ESPN.com.
Coach Jeff Tedford has been active in seeking out offensive minds this offseason. In early June, Tedford went to Massachusetts to pick the brain of New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick. The goal of that visit was to figure out how to use tight ends more. In 2011, Cal's TEs combined for 36 catches and 359 yards.
Although the date and purpose of the Petrino meeting is unknown, it's a safe bet that Tedford and Petrino talked offensive philosophies. Petrino has had major offensive success at the FBS level as both an offensive coordinator and head coach. In his final three seasons at Louisville (2004-06), Petrino's Cardinals ranked first, third and third in scoring offense, respectively.
Tedford has made it no secret that he wants to utilize his TEs, but he's also made it clear he wants his two best RBs -- Isi Sofele and C.J. Anderson -- on the field as often as possible. Petrino dealt with a similar situation during his only year at Auburn in 2002 when he had to keep Carnell "Cadillac" Williams and Ronnie Brown happy. Each back rushed for more than 745 yards that season. The Tigers rushed for 2,448 yards as a team.
Besides Cal, Petrino also reportedly met with the NFL's Tennessee Titans.
Cal's practice is scheduled to end at 6:45 p.m. PT Thursday, expect Tedford to address the Petrino meeting then.
