College football scores, rankings, highlights: Georgia, Notre Dame wrap up regular season with rivalry wins

Just like that, the 2023 college football regular season is in the books, and it was yet another week of close calls for College Football Playoff contenders during Rivalry Week Saturday. No. 8 Alabama used a final-minute prayer to beat Auburn in the Iron Bowl. No. 5 Florida State overcame an early 12-0 deficit against Florida at The Swamp and No. 4 Washington survived Washington State with a walk-off field goal in the Apple Cup. Granted, it was a guarantee that somebody in the top four would go down Saturday with No. 3 Michigan hosting No. 2 Ohio State. "The Game" ended with the Wolverines knocking off the Buckeyes for their third-straight win in the rivalry series. Michigan now heads to the Big Ten Championship Game to face Iowa as the Wolverines seek a third-straight Big Ten crown and CFP berth. Everyone is still looking up to No. 1 Georgia, which remains perfect in its quest for a national title three-peat after beating Georgia Tech.

Winners & losers from Week 13

Rivalry Week always brings chaos, and the final regular-season Saturday of the 2023 season was no exception. Five of the six teams that played as heavy favorites on Saturday failed to cover while Louisville lost to rival Kentucky.

But with the chaos came magical moments. Alabama put together an all-time sequence to survive Auburn. Michigan blasted past Ohio State thanks to a big day from quarterback J.J. McCarthy. And just as importantly, the ones who took care of business stood apart.

Now, conference championship weekend is set. Alabama vies with Georgia with a College Football Playoff spot on the line. Oregon and Washington also have a play-in game. Texas and Florida State will try to handle Oklahoma State and Louisville, respectively. Michigan will be heavy favorites against Iowa.

Texas A&M coaching search drama

With the college football regular season coming to a close, the Texas A&M coaching search is coming into focus. And as we all expected, it's a rollercoaster finding the next Aggies football coach. After it appeared on Saturday that Texas A&M was tapping Kentucky coach Mark Stoops to lead the program with an announcement imminent as he reportedly emerged as a top target, instead he will be staying with the Wildcats, according to multiple reports.

Stoops, 56, took over a moribund Kentucky team in 2013, eventually guiding the Wildcats to a bowl game appearance in his fourth season. Since 2018, Stoops has quietly transformed into one of the top coaches in the SEC. He has a 47-28 record over the past six years with four bowl wins over the past five seasons. Kentucky has won 10 games twice over that period, which matches the same number that Texas A&M has since 1998. Prior to Stoops's arrival, the Wildcats had not won 10 games since 1977.

Ohio State doesn't fall far in projected rankings

Rivalry Week in college football absolutely delivered the kind of thrills and excitement that fans expect from the final week of the regular season. But looking ahead to the new college football rankings, there are less shake ups than you might expect as Week 13 featured more close calls than outright upsets and many of the favorites held serve to close out November on the college football calendar.

There is guaranteed to be a shake up in the fop five following Michigan's 30-24 win against Ohio State as the Wolverines will challenge Georgia for first-place votes and the Buckeyes now have to sort out their position among the one-loss teams in the top 10. Other changes we're sure to see include a drop for Louisville after an upset loss to rival Kentucky at home, likely knocking the Cardinals from the top 10 as Jeff Brohm prepares his team for the ACC Championship Game.

Georgia survives in Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate

Final: No. 1 Georgia 31, Georgia Tech 23

Kendall Milton rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Carson Beck threw for 175 yards, one touchdown and one interceptions as the Bulldogs survived a valiant performance from their intrastate rivals. Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King's got the scoring started with a 9-yard run to open scoring in the first quarter, but Milton's 3-yard touchdown in the second quarter gave the two-time reigning national champions a 14-10 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. However, the Yellow Jackets hung around and made it a one-score game with 3:46 left as King scored from five yards out made it a one-score game. Georgia fell on the ensuing onside kick and iced it away.

It is the 29th straight win for a Georgia team that will play Alabama in the SEC Championship Game next Saturday on CBS.

Clemson closes regular season with win against South Carolina

Final: No. 24 Clemson 16, South Carolina 7

It wasn't pretty, but Clemson sent its regular season out on a high note with a win against archrival South Carolina Saturday evening. The Tigers did it without scoring a single offensive touchdown. Defensive back Khalil Barnes recovered a fumbled lateral 35 seconds into the game and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring and give the Tigers an early 7-0 lead. South Carolina responded with its own touchdown later in the first quarter but Clemson's defense completely shut things down from there. Kicker Jonathan Weitz hit three field goals from 40-plus yards to steadily build on Clemson's lead, and the Tigers were able to kneel the clock out late in the fourth quarter.

Clemson has enjoyed a rather quiet resurgence over the past few weeks. The Tigers started the year 4-4 but made a statement on Nov. 4 with a 31-23 win against Notre Dame. That sparked a four-game winning streak for the Tigers, with two of those wins coming against ranked teams. Next up for Clemson is a bowl game, marking their 16th-straight postseason appearance with Dabo Swinney at the helm.

Florida State survives at The Swamp

FINAL: No. 5 Florida State 24, Florida 15

It required a gritty effort in a rivalry game setting on the road, but Florida State beats Florida to stay undefeated, giving the Seminoles their second consecutive victory in the annual series between the in-state foes. In Tate Rodemaker's first start at quarterback following Jordan Travis' season-ending injury in Week 12, FSU rallied from an early 12-0 deficit, outscoring the the Gators 10-0 in the fourth quarter and delivering the dagger via a 26-yard Trey Benson touchdown run with less than 3 minutes to play. The Seminoles' ACC Championship Game date with Louisville is now the last hurdle before a potential College Football Playoff berth.

As for Florida, Saturday wraps up a disappointing second season under coach Billy Napier, as the Gators regress to five wins and miss out on bowl season. Florida is now 11-14 under Napier after stumbling to a 6-7 finish in 2022, though the Gators did reach a bowl game last winter. There will be plenty to evaluate in the Gainesville during the offseason.

Georgia pulling away from Georgia Tech

Late Q3: No. 1 Georgia 31, Georgia Tech 13

Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate has been tight for the majority of the game, but the Bulldogs have started to pull away from the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta. Freshman kicker Peyton Woodring connected on a 39-yard field goal to make it a two-score game early in the third quarter, and Kendall Milton scored his second touchdown of the game with a 4-yard score with 31 seconds left in the frame to finally get some breathing room. Milton has had a fantastic game running for 139 yards on 16 carries as they appear on their way to their 29th consecutive victory.

Have yourself a day, Audric Estime

Notre Dame running back Audric Estime is having himself a day against Stanford. Estime scored his fourth touchdown of the night to extend ND's lead over the Cardinal in Northern California. Estime has rushed for 238 yards on 25 attempts and has a season-high four touchdowns. Estime has been one of the top backs in the entire country and he continues to build on an impressive campaign.

Georgia up one-score at the break

HALF: No. 1 Georgia 21, Georgia Tech 13

The top-ranked Bulldogs roared back from a first quarter deficit thanks to touchdown runs from Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards -- the latter of which coming with just over one minute to play in the half. Milton has been a stud tonight, rushing for 86 yards on just 10 carries. Quarterback Carson Beck, who entered the game as a long shot to win the Heisman Trophy, has completed 8 of 11 for 122 yards and a 29-yard touchdown to Dominic Lovett in the first quarter for the Bulldogs' first score of the game.

In a day full of insane endings and near-upsets, it appeared that Georgia was the next in line for rivalry week drama. However, the Bulldogs controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball in the second quarter, which is going to put a ton of pressure on Yellow Jackets' head coach Brent Key at halftime considering the talent discrepancy on his roster.

Notre Dame in control at Stanford

HALFTIME: No. 18 Notre Dame 28, Stanford 16

It looked like an upset might be brewing on The Farm after Stanford held a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Notre Dame promptly outscored the Cardinal 21-3 in the second quarter to go up by 12 at halftime. Fighting Irish running back Audric Estime has already found the end zone twice, including a 39-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Notre Dame is seeking revenge after Stanford came into Notre Dame Stadium last fall and upset the Irish, 16-14, and it looks to have things under control this time around ... at least for now.

Upset buzzing in Atlanta?

END Q1: Georgia Tech 10, No. 1 Georgia 7

The evening wave of games seems to be following the same path as the previous games of the day. The Yellow Jackets -- 24-point underdogs heading into the game -- lead the two-time reigning national champion Bulldogs by a field goal through the first 15 minutes. The Yellow Jackets recovered a Daijun Edwards fumble on the Bulldogs 37-yard line midway through the frame, and quarterback Haynes King strolled in from 9 yards out four plays later to give them the lead. Bulldogs' quarterback Carson Beck found Dominic Lovett to tie it up, but Tech tacked on a field goal late in the quarter for the lead.

Washington survives Apple Cup to stay unbeaten

Final: Washington 24, Washington State 21

It all started with a fourth-and-1 call with less than two minutes remaining that set up a 42-yard walk-off field goal by Grady Gross. The Huskies elected to go for it backed up deep in their own territory before coach Kalen DeBoer dialed up a play for star wide receiver Rome Odunze, who took it 23 yards to get inside Washington State territory. UW quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had two throws that were almost intercepted in the final moments, but the Huskies nevertheless survived against theirt in-state rival in the final Pac-12 Apple Cup to win their 19th consecutive game.

The Huskies will face Oregon next week in the Pac-12 Championship Game with a berth to the College Football Playoff on the line. As for Washington State, it finishes the 2023 season 5-7 and out of reach of bowl eligibility.

Pokes survive in 2OT

2OT: Oklahoma State 40, BYU 34

Oklahoma State overcame a 24-6 halftime deficit to outlast BYU and punch a ticket to the Big 12 Championship Game against Texas. The Cowboys forced a fumble off tight end Isaac Rex on the final play of double-overtime to walk off with a final victory and reach 9-3.

The Cougars jumped on Oklahoma State early and needed a win to reach bowl eligibility during their first season in the Big 12. However, Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon II exploded for five touchdowns to overtime a two-interception day from quarterback Alan Bowman. The Cougars were ultimately held to 321 yards of offense and 3.6 yards per carry as Oklahoma State survived its early mistakes.

BYU forces OT in Stillwater

END REGULATION: No. 20 Oklahoma State 27, BYU 27

We're off to overtime in Stillwater after BYU hits a 48-yard field goal as time expires to knot this one at 27. A missed extra-point earlier in the game by Oklahoma State looms large, or this one would have been all but finished and the Cowboys would have secured their spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. Will Oklahoma State escape and punch their ticket to Arlington, Texas, or will the Cougars pull a stunning upset? It all comes down to the wire here with tons at stake in the conference title race.

'Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate'

No. 1 Georgia will be traveling to Atlanta in back-to-back weekends, first tonight for its annual rivalry game against Georgia Tech and then again next weekend for the SEC Championship Game against No. 8 Alabama. The Bulldogs are looking to make it six straight wins in the series with the Yellow Jackets as Georgia inches closer to a potential College Football Playoff National Championship three-peat. Georgia Tech is a 24-point underdog on home turf, and while the Yellow Jackets are much improved this season, they still find themselves encountering a behemoth. Over the last two weeks, the Bulldogs beat ranked Ole Miss and Tennessee teams a combined 90-27.

Alabama stuns Auburn with last-second TD

Alabama just ripped Auburn's heart out. The Tigers made a valiant stand on defense with their backs to the goal line, forcing the Crimson Tide into third-and-goal from the 26-yard line. Quarterback Jalen Milroe ran the ball on a keeper for no gain, setting up fourth-and-goal from way deep. Alabama, down 24-20 with just over 40 seconds left to play, couldn't kick a field goal so the Crimson Tide set up for a Hail Mary. Auburn dropped nine players into coverage, meaning Milroe had plenty of time to sit in the pocket and allow his receivers to run open in Auburn's secondary. After about 10 seconds, Milroe launched a pass towards the back corner of the end zone. Wide receiver Isaiah Bond came down with it with 32 seconds left. Alabama hit the extra point to take a 27-24 lead, and then housed an interception on Auburn's ensuing possession to slam the door shut. An absolutely heartbreaking way for Auburn to lose after it lead for a majority of the second half.

Odunze does it again

Rome Odunze just made his second touchdown grab of the day to put Washington up 21-14 entering the fourth quarter against a Washington State team that just refuses to go away. Odunze has made six catches for 110 yards. Washington's next-best receiver has 26 yards today as chunks have been difficult for the Huskies to find in the passing game. Huge fourth quarter coming for UW, which has locked up a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game already but would put its CFP hopes at risk with a loss to the 5-6 Cougars.

FSU looks to impress CFP committee

Florida State was holding steady at the No. 4 spot in the College Football Playoff Rankings until earlier in the week, when the Seminoles were bumped down to No. 5 as Washington moved into the fourth spot. It came after the Seminoles lost star quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending injury in Week 12 against North Alabama, putting the offense in Tate Rodemaker's hands moving forward. While it's unclear just how much the injury to Travis factored into FSU's one-spot drop, the Seminoles could certainly use a convincing road win against Florida to curb any external doubt about what the team can be moving forward without their leader. If FSU takes care of the Gators, they still have to clear No. 10 Louisville in the ACC Championship Game in order to enter selection Sunday undefeated.

Mountain West goes to computer tiebreaker

That's right. Computer rankings will be used Sunday morning to sort out a three-way tie atop the Mountain West Conference between San Jose State, UNLV and Boise State in determining who will compete in the league championship game. UNLV has already done enough to guarantee a spot in the game, so it boils down to San Jose State and Boise State for the other spot. The Rebels will host if the Boise State gets in, but will have to go on the road if it's San Jose State that competes for the league crown. To say the least, this is not something that you see everyday at the FBS level of college football, but it's bound to be more commonplace as conferences move away from divisions.

Noah Fifita dominating for Arizona

One in-state rivalry game that has featured little drama today has been Arizona vs. Arizona State. The No. 15 Wildcats are dominating the Sun Devils 52-23 in the fourth quarter as quarterback Noah Fifita has passed for more than 500 yards and four touchdowns. This will mark six straight victories to close the season for Arizona under second-year coach Jedd Fisch. He's not one whose been mentioned a ton in connection with other jobs — and maybe he's happy in Tucson — but the job he's done this season is incredible. The Wildcats are going to be 9-3 entering bowl season with a chance to win 10 games for the first time since 2014 and just the fourth time in program history.

To the wire at Auburn

We've already had one top-10 team go down against an in-state rival today. Now, two more are at risk in similar situations as Washington State gives Washington a run for its money and AUBURN is leading No. 8 Alabama 24-20 in the fourth quarter as the Tigers continue shredding the Crimson Tide on the ground. Give credit to Alabama's defense for holding Auburn to a 21-yard field goal just now. This would be quite a stunner 10 years after the infamous "Kick Six" game.

Incredible catch for Washington State

Kyle Williams just made an awesome catch for Washington State to tie things up at 14-14 against Washington with 8 seconds left in the first half. Cam Ward threw a perfect ball to the front pylon and Williams managed to get a foot down and control the ball in unison before his other foot came down out of bounds. Ward finished the first half 17 of 24 passing for 208 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The Cougars outgained the Huskies 237-151 in the first half, and things are quite interesting in a rivalry showdown with CFP implications.

Tennessee up big in hostile rivalry battle

Neyland Stadium has turned into a Fight Club for one night only. Things have been very chippy between SEC East rivals Tennessee and Vanderbilt so far. The Vols enter halftime with a 31-10 lead, but things have almost boiled over multiple times in the first two quarters. Tensions rose in the second quarter when Vanderbilt was called for two consecutive false starts. Officials stopped play on both occasions, but Tennessee still went after and tackled Vanderbilt quarterback AJ Swann without drawing a flag. VU coach Clark Lea was irate as a result and tore into the officials, drawing an unsportsmanlike penalty of his own. Vanderbilt ran the ball on third-and-39 and players started to scuffle as soon as the play ended. Vanderbilt's bench cleared and the two sides were called for offsetting unsportsmanlike penalties.

Later in the second quarter, Vanderbilt cornerback Alan Wright was called for a late hit after the extra point that extended Tennessee's lead to 31-10. When the Commodores kneeled the ball to end the half, coaches from both teams immediately ran on the field to ensure that their players went immediately to the locker room. If things don't cool down, the second half could get rough.

Oklahoma fans are happy

The Sooners are big fans of what BYU is doing to Oklahoma State right now as the Cougars have a 24-6 lead on the Cowboys at halftime. If Oklahoma State wins, it will play Texas for the Big 12 championship next week. But if BYU hangs on, it will be the Sooners heading to AT&T Stadium for a rematch of their earlier victory vs. the Longhorns. BYU scored all 24 of its points in the final 16:24 of the first half. Included among the storm was a 13-yard interception return for a touchdown from Eddie Heckard. There was also this trickery, which led to a field goal before halftime.

Alabama's run defense?

So, what's going on with Alabama's run defense? The Crimson Tide are up 17-14 at halftime against Auburn, but they are getting gashed on the ground. Jarquez Hunter had a 42-yard run and Damari Alston had a 56-yarder. In total, the Tigers have run for 181 yards and two scores on the ground to give themselves a chance in the Iron Bowl. Payton Thorne is just 2 of 10 for 20 yards through the air but his team is in the hunt nevertheless. Reminder that Auburn lost at home to New Mexico State last week.

Close start at Washington

Washington State just tied it up 7-7 on Washington late in the first quarter as Cam Ward found Josh Kelly for a 21-yard touchdown. That was a big drive for Wazzou after it went three-and-out on its first two possessions. Washington had just driven 51 yards for the game's first score as Dillon Johnson punched in a 1-yard run. But it looks like we've got a game. UW is looking to cap an undefeated regular season before it plays a rematch with Oregon next week in the Pac-12 Championship Game. While these two teams have committed to continue playing each other after conference realignment, this is still a huge game for Wazzou as the Cougars need to win order to reach 6-6.

Michigan wins again

Final: Michigan 30, Ohio State 24

In what will likely go down as a College Football Playoff elimination game, Michigan just beat arch rival Ohio State 30-24 to cap a 12-0 regular season. The Wolverines will enter next week's Big Ten Championship Game against Iowa with three straight victories over Ohio State under their belt. Rod Moore capped the outcome by intercepting Kyle McCord with 25 seconds remaining as the Buckeyes were driving for a potential game-winning score. McCord's two interceptions were arguably the difference as his first led directly to Michigan's first touchdown of the game in the first quarter. Blake Corum had a pair of scores on the ground to lead the Wolverines.

Apple Cup about to kick

Washington and Washington State fans received great news earlier in the week when it was announced the in-state foes will continue playing their annual feud through 2028 as the Huskies prepare to leave for the Big Ten in 2024. Although Washington already clinched its spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game last week, the undefeated Huskies know they can't sleepwalk their way into this rivalry game after just entering the top four of the College Football Playoff Rankings earlier in the week. Washington State heads to Seattle needing a victory to secure a bowl berth, and the Cougars have some newfound momentum after routing Colorado 56-14 last weekend to snap a six-game losing streak.

Down go the Cardinals

Kentucky upset No. 10 Louisville 38-31 on Saturday in a rivalry showdown as the Wildcats came up with huge plays in all three phases of the game during a wild second half. Ray Davis capped the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown run with 1:02 remaining, and the Cardinals failed to reach the end zone on the final possession as UK's Jordan Lovett intercepted Jack Plummer's heave to the end zone in the final seconds.

The Cardinals (10-2, 7-1 ACC) are still headed to the ACC Championship Game next week to face Florida State, but Saturday's outcome will send them to Charlotte for that showdown on a sour note. Louisville entered as an 8-point favorite and in prime position to end a four-game losing streak to the Wildcats, who entered having lost five of their last six.

Jayden Daniels' Heisman resume complete

FINAL: No. 14 LSU 42, Texas A&M 30

LSU ends the regular season 9-3 with a 12-point home win against Texas A&M, and that'll do it for Jayden Daniels before the Heisman Trophy winner is revealed in two weeks, as the Tigers are idle on conference championship weekend. He ends his final game of the regular season passing for 235 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for an additional 120 yards in the win against the Aggies. The second-year LSU signal-caller sits as the current betting favorite to win the award, though he'll now have to wait and see what Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon quarterback Bo Nix do (both play in the Pac-12 Championship Game next Friday) in terms of the race for college football's top player award. With the win, LSU also has a chance to win 10 games for the second time in as many years with coach Brian Kelly at the helm.
