Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall is doubtful to play in the team's Week 9 home contest against Marshall after a violent hit in a win over Arkansas State forced him to spend Saturday night in the hospital, coach Tim Beck said Monday. McCall, who has since been released from the medical facility and is resting at home, did not suffer a concussion, according to Beck.
McCall slid and collided with Arkansas State defensive back Trevian Thomas late during the Chanticleers' 27-17 victory. McCall hit his head on the turf as a result of the collision and laid motionless on the field for several minutes. He was later carted off the field before being transported from the stadium via ambulance to a local medical facility.
Redshirt senior Jarrett Guest, who took over at quarterback following McCall's exit, is seemingly in line to start against the Thundering Herd if McCall is unable to play. Although McCall's status is in doubt for Week 9, Beck expressed optimism Monday that Coastal Carolina's veteran signal-caller could be available to return for the team's Week 10 road game against Old Dominion.
McCall is in his fifth season of his NCAA career, which has been exclusively spent at Coastal Carolina. He emerged as the team's starter in 2020 and has held that role since, capturing Sun Belt Player of the Year honors each of the past three seasons. McCall hit a milestone shortly before suffering his injury, surpassing 10,000 passing yards for his NCAA career. This season, McCall has passed for 1,919 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions.
The Chanticleers, who are in their first season with Beck at the helm, sit 4-3 as they prepare to face Marshall. Coastal Carolina won the only previous meeting between the schools in 2022.
