Why Boise State can cover

The Broncos crushed the Miners 54-13 at home last season, with Hank Bachmeier throwing for 340 yards and a pair of touchdowns. One of the senior quarterback's scoring passes was a 61-yarder to wide receiver Stefan Cobbs, who made his first TD catch of 2022 on Saturday. Bachmeier completed passes to nine different players against UT Martin, with wideout Latrell Caples and running back George Holani hauling in four apiece.

Holani was the offensive star for Boise State in the victory, making a touchdown catch while also running for 110 yards and a TD. It was the eighth career 100-yard rushing performance by the redshirt junior, who returned five punts for 69 yards to finish with 226 all-purpose yards. The Broncos' defense has been strong against the run of late, limiting New Mexico and UT Martin to a combined total of 51 rushing yards after giving up 178 against Oregon State in their season opener.

Why UTEP can cover

The Miners struggled against the run in Saturday's setback, allowing the Lobos to gain 188 yards on the ground, but defended the pass well. UTEP limited New Mexico to 111 yards through the air and did not allow a passing touchdown. It also got to Lobos quarterback Miles Kendrick twice, with Cal Wallerstedt registering both sacks.

The redshirt junior linebacker leads the Miners with three sacks on the season, which also are the first three of his career. Wallerstedt is first in Conference USA with 5.5 tackles for loss, which place him 13th in the nation. UTEP has scored more than 13 points just once in four games despite showing an ability to move the ball as it is tied for 12th in the country with 82 first downs.
