Alex Mack: Announces retirement
Mack announced his retirement Thursday, Michael Silver of NFL Network reports.
Mack was contemplating retirement throughout the offseason, and he'll ultimately elect to hang up his cleats following 13 professional seasons with the Browns, Falcons and 49ers. Jake Brendel and Dohnovan West seem like the most likely candidates to start at center for San Francisco in 2022.

49ers' Alex Mack: Agrees to reworked contract
The 49ers and Mack agreed to a re-worked deal Thursday, lowering his base salary for 2022 and 2023, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Mack, who is contemplating retirement, dropped his salary in 2022 from $5M to $1.12M, freeing up $4M in cap space for the 49ers. He additionally reworked his 2023 salary, but there is no guarantee the 36-year-old is returning to the field for a 14th season quite yet. The extra cap space could provide the 49ers the extra funds for a new center if Mack ultimately does decide to hang up his cleats.

49ers' Alex Mack: Expected back in 2022
Mack is mulling retirement this offseason, but 49ers GM John Lynch said Wednesday he expects the center to play in 2022, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Mack joined San Francisco on a three-year, $14.85 million deal in March of 2021 and started every game at center. He provides stability in the middle of the 49ers' offensive line, and the team will gladly welcome him back should he opt to return for a 14th NFL season.
