Codey McElroy: Moves to waivers
The Buccaneers waived McElroy (foot) with an injury designation Tuesday, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
With McElroy -- who spent the majority of the past two-and-a-half seasons on the team's practice squad -- having been waived, Cameron Brate, Kyle Rudolph, Cade Otton and Ko Kieft profile as Tampa Bay's top tight end options. McElroy is also set to undergo foot surgery this week, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports, so he'll have bounce back from that before getting a chance to resurface.

McElroy was elevated for two games during the 2021 campaign. He played 15 total snaps and caught one of two targets for zero yards.

McElroy was inconsistent during the Bucs' final preseason contest Saturday. He showed off his athleticism on a 20-yard touchdown catch, but he also missed his assignment on special teams that led to a blocked field-goal attempt. Tampa Bay has elected to keep just three tight ends -- Cameron Brate, O.J. Howard and Rob Gronkowski -- on their 53-man roster. McElroy will likely end up on the Bucs' practice squad if he clears waivers.

Buccaneers' Codey McElroy: Mixed reviews in preseason finale
McElroy secured both his targets for 32 yards and a touchdown in Saturday night's 23-16 preseason win over the Texans, but his missed assignment on a Jose Borregales field-goal attempt led to a blocked kick, Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
McElroy's 20-yard scoring connection with rookie quarterback Kyle Trask in the latter portion of the third quarter showed off the young tight end's athleticism and hands, but the special-teams gaffe is precisely the type of mistake a bubble player wants to steer clear of. Head coach Bruce Arians didn't mince words when commenting on the miscue, calling McElroy's miss "a total whiff" and noting "it didn't help his cause." The Buccaneers aren't even guaranteed to keep four tight ends when they make final roster cuts by Tuesday's deadline, and for what it's worth, Greg Auman of The Athletic projects Tampa Bay to keep neither Tanner Hudson nor McElroy on the 53-man roster to open the season.

McElroy heads into Saturday night's preseason game against the Texans with a legitimate chance to unseat Tanner Hudson for a possible No. 4 tight end spot, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
The athletic McElroy has made an impression on head coach Bruce Arians in a very important category, that being his blocking. Arians noted "he's gotten better and better" with respect to McElroy's progress in that area, while Hudson, who's paced the Buccaneers in receptions in each of the first two exhibitions, continues to struggle with that aspect of his game. There's still no guarantee Tampa Bay will keep four tight ends, but that decision will likely largely be based on the performance of each player versus Houston.

McElroy, who is battling for a reserve tight end role, has stood out with his sure hands during the first few days of training camp, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.
The athletic McElroy is an intriguing prospect, considering he played two seasons of minor-league baseball and some college basketball before devoting himself to football on a full-time basis. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Oklahoma State product is already 28 years old and counts a 30-yard grab back in 2019 as his only career NFL reception, but the Buccaneers thought enough of his potential to ink him to a reserve/futures contract in February following a 2020 season on the practice squad. McElroy is competing with fellow incumbent Tanner Hudson and journeyman Jerell Adams for a roster spot, and preseason games could ultimately be the deciding factor on who wins the job battle.
