Player Outlook
Moss saw an extended opportunity in the final few weeks of the 2022 season with Jonathan Taylor sidelined, culminating with a 21.1-point PPR performance in Week 18 after most Fantasy seasons had finished. He didn't hit the double-digit point mark (PPR) in any other week, but he could be a Fantasy factor early in the year with Jonathan Taylor beginning the season on the PUP list. However, Moss suffered a broken arm at the end of July and is uncertain to be ready for Week 1. Fantasy drafters could take Moss with a late-round flier and potentially land a starting NFL running back for the majority of the 2023 season.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: RBs to Start

Moss is back as the No. 1 running back for the Colts with Jonathan Taylor (thumb) out, and Moss thrived in that role earlier this season. He scored at least 20.7 PPR points in three of his first four games this year, including 33.5 PPR points against the Titans in Week 5 in their first meeting. For the season, Moss has eight games this year with at least 10 total touches, and he scored at least 14.4 PPR points in five of those outings. Tennessee has allowed five running backs in the past five games to score at least 12.2 PPR points, including Bijan Robinson, Najee Harris, Jaylen Warren, Rachaad White and Chuba Hubbard, and Moss should add his name to that list. He has top-10 upside in all leagues in Week 13.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Poised for lead role in Week 13

Moss is expected to serve as the Colts' lead back for at least Sunday's game against the Titans after team owner Jim Irsay said Jonathan Taylor would undergo thumb surgery Wednesday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Taylor opened the season on the PUP list as he completed his recovery from January ankle surgery, and Moss served as Indianapolis' lead back from Weeks 2 through 4, compiling 280 yards and a touchdown on 66 carries to go with six receptions on eight targets for 42 yards and another score. The two then worked in a near-even timeshare over the ensuing three games following Taylor's return in Week 5, but Moss had since faded into a supporting role. With Irsay noting that Taylor is expected to miss 2-to-3 weeks, Moss should at least temporarily have a clear path to reclaiming a three-down role, as the Colts haven't shown much of an inclination to give work to third-stringer Trey Sermon this season. Given the opportunity in front of him, Moss is worthy of rostering in nearly every league.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Compiles 70 total yards in win

Moss rushed eight times for 55 yards and brought in two of three targets for 15 yards in the Colts' 27-20 win over the Buccaneers on Sunday. Despite Jonathan Taylor logging 15 rush attempts, Moss retained a solid complementary role and encouragingly had a modest share of passing game work as well. The fourth-year pro had recorded just eight total carries and zero targets in the last two games before the Colts' Week 11 bye, so his resurgence Sunday was certainly a welcome sight for those still holding onto Moss in deep formats. It remains to be seen if he'll be afforded a similar workload in a Week 13 road matchup against the Titans.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Eliminated from offense

Moss rushed the ball once for two yards in Sunday's 10-6 win over the Patriots. Moss had slowly seen his role in the offense decline as Jonathan Taylor ramped back up after returning from an ankle injury. Sunday appeared to complete that process, as he saw only one touch as opposed to Taylor's 23. After an excellent start to the campaign, it appears that Moss has slipped into a true backup role.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: RBs to Sit (Start/Sit)

Is the Zack Moss experiment over in Indianapolis? I hope not because he's done well, even in tandem with Jonathan Taylor, but Moss' playing time has dwindled the past two games. He played a season-low 21 percent of the snaps in Week 9 at Carolina and had seven carries for 26 yards and no targets. At this point, it will take him falling into the end zone to save his Fantasy production, and Taylor is close to being a workhorse once again. I would only use Moss as a flex option in deeper leagues against the Patriots in Germany.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Makes little impact in Week 9

Moss carried the ball seven times for 26 yards in Sunday's 27-13 win over the Panthers. The fourth-year running back produced his lowest yardage total and touch volume of the season, as the Colts didn't need to get much production from their offense on a day when the defense scored two touchdowns on interception returns. Moss's role has dwindled since Jonathan Taylor rejoined the team, but he'd still seen at least 12 touches in every game the duo was together in the Indy backfield prior to Sunday. Moss could resume his usual workload in Week 10 in what figures to be a more competitive matchup against the Patriots.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Sneaky Sleeper (Lineup Decisions)

Don't be surprised to see the Colts run wild over the Panthers -- we've seen them give 18 carries each to Moss and Taylor (that was two weeks ago against the Browns) and 29 total carries to them combined (23 for Moss in Taylor's first game back against the Titans). It should be enough to consider Moss in all formats as a RB2 ahead of the Packers RBs, the Rams RBs and the Bears RBs.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Contrarian DFS Play

Moss is the contrarian play for the second straight week. While his price did go up, Taylor is still $1,300 more despite failing to pull away from Moss at all. This could be a game where the two backs combine for 35-plus touches, 250-plus yards and multiple scores.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Continues producing in loss

Moss rushed 11 times for 66 yards and a touchdown and brought in his only target for eight yards in the Colts' 38-27 loss to the Saints on Sunday. Moss logged only one fewer carry than Jonathan Taylor, and both backs surprisingly found plenty of running room against the Saints' typically stout defense. Moss also scored his fourth touchdown in the last three games on a one-yard rush in the second quarter, making it a highly efficient afternoon. Moss figures to continue operating in a nearly even timeshare with Taylor on the road in a favorable matchup against the Panthers in Week 9.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Suiting up Sunday

Moss (heel/elbow) is active for Sunday's game against the Saints. Listed as questionable heading into Sunday and considered a game-time decision leading up to the 1 p.m. ET kickoff, Moss has received the green light to suit up after coming out of a pregame warmup no worse for wear. Though he has handled snap shares ranging between 49 and 80 percent in each of the Colts' three games since Jonathan Taylor made his season debut Week 5, Moss could take more of a back seat to Indianapolis' top back while the former plays Sunday at less than 100 percent health. With that in mind, Moss may could serve as Option 1B out of the backfield, if not a clear No. 2 option behind Taylor, who may be ready to handle his heaviest workload of the season after carrying 18 times for 75 yards and a touchdown while adding three receptions for 45 yards in last week's 39-38 loss to Cleveland.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: True game-time decision

Moss (elbow/heel), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Saints, will see how his foot feels during pregame warmups before the Colts make a determination on his status, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Moss failed to practice Wednesday and Friday while turning in a limited session Thursday. Of the two injuries, his heel seems to be the bigger issue, as Schefter specifically noted that Moss wants to see how his foot feels when pushing off. Moss's status is particularly noteworthy to Jonathan Taylor, who could see his first full workload of the campaign if Moss is inactive.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Questionable after missed practice

Moss (elbow/heel) didn't practice Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Saints. Moss sandwiched a pair of absences from practices around Thursday's limited session. Even if he suits up Sunday against a Saints defense that's allowing just 98.7 rushing yards per game, Moss could see a workload reduction after he and Jonathan Taylor operated in a near-even split of the backfield snaps over the previous two weeks. Taylor had been expected to gradually take over the lead role, and Moss's injuries could speed up that process.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Logs limited practice

Moss (elbow/heel) was a limited practice participant Thursday. After missing Wednesday's practice, Moss's return to a limited session Thursday has him trending in a positive direction ahead of Sunday's game against the Saints. Friday's practice report will reveal whether Moss upgrades to full participation, and if he does, he'll likely avoid taking an injury designation into Sunday.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Back at practice

Moss (elbow/heel) returned to practice Thursday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Moss missed Wednesday's session, but his return to the field Thursday bodes well for his chances of being available for Sunday's game against the Saints. The Colts' upcoming injury report will reveal Moss's participation level, but he likely will need to practice fully by Friday in order to avoid a Week 8 injury designation.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: RBs to Sit

Moss did more than I expected in Week 7 against Cleveland with 18 carries for 57 yards and one catch for 5 yards on two targets, but I feared that Jonathan Taylor would start to take over the Colts backfield. It was a 50-50 split in playing time, but Taylor looked like himself again with 18 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown and three catches for 45 yards on four targets. Taylor is now worth trusting again in all leagues as a must-start Fantasy quarterback, but Moss is just a flex at best. And given the opponent, I would try to sit Moss if you can since Taylor might start taking on more work. The Saints are No. 3 in fewest Fantasy points allowed to opposing running backs, and Travis Etienne in Week 7 is the lone running back to score against New Orleans this year.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Nursing two injuries

Moss didn't practice Wednesday due to elbow and heel injuries, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Moss's absence to begin Week 8 prep makes his status for Sunday's game against the Saints worth tracking. Both Moss and Jonathan Taylor logged 35 snaps on offense and 18 carries in this past weekend's 39-38 loss to the Browns, but Moss's injury could pave the way for Taylor to stake a claim to the majority of the work out of the backfield now that he'll be making his fourth appearance following a four-week stint on the PUP list to open the campaign. It's possible, however, that Moss received a maintenance day to start the practice week, a notion that would be supported by participation in Thursday's session, in any capacity.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Contrarian DFS Play

Moss has already seen his price drop to $6,100 and with Jonathan Taylor looking all the way back, I don't imagine many will find that appealing. Still, Moss has been a genuinely good running back and just played 50% of the snaps in Week 7. I don't think he'll completely disappear and the explosiveness he's shown could pay off at this price on just one play.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Start Him (Lineup Decisions)

I would expect these two to split snaps and touches close to 50-50 again, including both to do decently in the passing game. Moss has an ever-so-slight edge because he seems to still have a grip on short-yardage touchdown opportunities. Only in full PPR should you consider Moss as a decent RB2 who I'd start over Taylor, Alexander Mattison, Roschon Johnson and the Broncos RBs.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Likely to see reduced workload

Jonathan Taylor is expected to get a larger workload this week at Jacksonville after playing just 10 snaps last week, but Moss is expected to still be part of the mix, the Indianapolis Star reports. "Shoot, those two guys both playing good football will be pretty fun to see," Colts offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter said. "We'll see if we can keep that coming." Taylor missed the first four games while on the PUP list while recovering from an ankle injury. With the Colts also signing Taylor to a three-year, $42 million extension last week, it would seem likely that he takes over the bulk of running back touches sooner rather than later. However, Moss is third in the NFL in rushing yards (445) while paying just four games, so it's unclear how the workload will be divided. Moss would appear likely to move to a split with Taylor at best this week, but he's been so efficient (5.0 YPC) that he can still have an impact in a reduced role.

  • Colts' Zack Moss: Start Him (Lineup Decisions)

The Colts have an edge with their offensive line getting a step on the Jaguars' front; Moss already averages 2.13 yards before contact and the Jags give up 1.35 yards before contact (and 1.94 yards before contact on power-scheme runs). It's purely a hunch but because Taylor is still ramping up and it takes as many as four weeks to "get right," Moss should lead the way and could see as many as 15 touches. I'd start Moss as an RB2 over Rhamondre Stevenson, Emari Demercado and Taylor.
