Evan Spencer: Placed on reserve/retired list
Spencer was placed on the reserve/retired list on Friday.
Spencer was a sixth-round pick of the Redskins in 2015 and spent his rookie year on Tampa Bay's practice squad after Washington waived him. It's unclear why he retired, but since he was in for a season of little more than a practice-squad role once again, his absence likely won't have an impact on the Buccaneers.

Evan Spencer: Signed to practice squad Thursday
Spencer was signed to the Bucs practice squad Thursday, the team's official site reports.
After having made the initial version of the team's 53-man roster, Spencer was jettisoned Tuesday when the team opted to ink veteran Cecil Shorts. However, given the obvious interest that the Bucs had in retaining him, he was unsurprisingly brought back in a practice squad capacity for the time being. Spencer tallied five receptions for 54 yards in the preseason and flashed during some training camp practices as well. Spencer spent a bulk of last season on the practice squad as well and would appear likely to be the first receiver summoned to the active roster in case of an injury.

Spencer was released by the Buccaneers on Tuesday.
The Buccaneers parted ways with Spencer on Tuesday in order to make room for veteran Cecil Shorts, who the team signed to a one-year deal. The team was looking to bolster the back end of their receiver depth chart and choose to go with experience in Shorts over a young wideout like Spencer. The former sixth-round pick could find his way onto a roster, if not a team's practice squad.

Spencer has secured a spot on the Buccaneer's final roster as the fifth receiver, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The final spot was essentially between Spencer and second-year wide receiver Kenny Bell, who ended up being released on Friday. Spencer likely won't see much of the field this year barring any unforeseen circumstances, but his three catches for 27 yards in Tampa Bay's final preseason game looked to be just what he needed to stay on the team.

Buccaneers' Evan Spencer: Secures all three targets in preseason finale
Spencer secured all three of his targets for 27 yards in Wednesday's 20-13 preseason loss to the Redskins.
Spencer made a solid impression at the right time, especially considering he'd missed last Friday's tilt against the Browns with a knee injury. He ran without any issue after returning to practice earlier in the week and tied Bernard Reedy and Peyton Barber for second on the Bucs in receptions for the night. Spencer finishes the exhibition slate with five receptions for 54 yards over three games and will now wait to see if he's done enough to secure a spot on the final roster.

The 23-year-old missed last Friday's game against the Browns with a knee injury suffered against the Jaguars the previous week, but has been back on the practice field this week. Spencer figures to receive plenty of reps in Wednesday night's preseason finale as the Bucs attempt to finalize the back end of their wide receiver corps. The former Buckeye has had a quiet showing through the two exhibition contests he has participated in, securing just two of six targets for 27 yards.

The second-year pro remained a spectator for the third consecutive practice and is losing valuable opportunities to make his case for a spot on the latter half of the Bucs' wide receiver depth chart. Spencer secured two of four targets for 27 yards in Saturday's 27-21 preseason victory over the Jaguars.
The former Buckeye was solid in his second-half opportunities, somewhat redeeming himself after failing to catch the two targets he saw in the preseason opener against the Eagles. The former Ohio State Buckeye has opened some eyes during training camp and particularly shined during a one-on-one drill against Jags corner Aaron Colvin, making an impressive catch despite tight coverage. Spencer will look to carry over his solid practice performances into game action on Saturday against Jacksonville, as he was only able to haul in one of five targets for six yards in the preseason opener versus the Eagles last Thursday.

Buccaneers' Evan Spencer: Makes multiple heady plays in Friday practice
Spencer made some eye-catching grabs in Friday's practice, hauling in a deflected ball in traffic and making a one-handed touchdown catch .
The Ohio State product showed some good concentration on both plays, as he tries to stand out in what is a crowded and competitive position this summer. Spencer brings solid size at 6-foot-2, 208 pounds, as well as familiarity with head coach Dirk Koetter's offensive system after spending the majority of last season on the Bucs' practice squad. The second-year receiver should see plenty of time during preseason games as the team tries to sort through the plethora of candidates at receiver.

Spencer had been on the practice squad since Week 3, so the Buccaneers decided to fill the open spot on their roster with a familiar face. His role over the season's final two weeks is not defined, but the Buccaneers may give him a few snaps to let him show what he can do.
