DeShawn Shead: Retiring from NFL
Shead announced his retirement Friday and will transition into a coaching role with the Seahawks, John Boyle of the team's official site reports.
Shead spent six seasons with the Seahawks, during which he played 54 games at safety and cornerback. The last time the 32-year-old saw the field was in 2019 with the Lions, a season in which he tallied 18 tackles and a forced fumble. The veteran will now aim to impart his defensive knowledge through his new coaching role.

DeShawn Shead: Let go by Saints
The Saints waived Shead on Saturday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Shead just signed with the team Tuesday, but the Saints have more pressing needs on offense -- namely, wide receiver and fullback -- for the season finale. The 31-year-old last played for the Lions in 2018, recording 18 tackles and a forced fumble.

Shead spent the first five years of his career in Seattle before heading to Detroit last season, and he now finds his way back to the Pacific Northwest. Lions' DeShawn Shead: Gets one-year deal with Detroit
Shead agreed to a one-year, $3.35 million contract with the Lions on Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports.
Shead was recently cut loose by Seattle after his recovery from a torn ACL kept him out for all but two games last season. The Portland State product is now healthy and proved to be a versatile defensive back who logged playing time at each position in the Seahawks secondary since the team signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2012. Shead will initially slot in as the No. 3 cornerback in Detroit behind Darius Slay and Nevin Lawson, though it's possible that the Lions' 2017 second-round pick, Teez Tabor, could push him for playing time before long.

Seahawks' DeShawn Shead: To be released Monday
The Seahawks plan to release Shead on Monday after his contract tolls for 2018, Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.
Shead spent the bulk of the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which means he would have played the 2018 season at the same contract amount he earned with the team in 2017, Crabtree said. The Seahawks granting his release after the contact tolls will allow him to test the market as an unrestricted free agent. Seattle apparently has some interest in bringing back the 29-year-old, but the oft-injured cornerback is also likely to draw interest elsewhere.

Shead recorded two solo tackles in the Seahawks' Week 17 loss to the Cardinals.
Shead also played against the Cowboys in Week 16, but didn't make any statistical contributions. The 28-year-old remained on the Physically Unable to Perform list through Week 15 as he recovered from a torn ACL in a January 2017 playoff game, and enters 2018 as a free agent.

Shead resumed practicing earlier this month and was recently cleared for game action. The 29-year-old hasn't played since tearing his ACL last January and his role on the Seahawks defense remains to be seen, but opportunities should be there as the team's secondary remains ravaged by injury.

Shead could make his season debut Sunday against the Jags, but head coach Pete Carroll will proceed with caution. In 2016, Shead accrued 81 tackles, 14 sacks and one interception, and he could be even more useful with Richard Sherman (Achilles) out for the year.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that Shead (knee) is "really close" to being ready to practice again, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Shead has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list all season while recovering from a torn ACL suffered in the playoffs back in January. Once Shead resumes practicing, the Seahawks will have a 21-day window in which to activate him to the 53-man roster. The Seahawks could benefit from Shead's return, given that Richard Sherman (Achilles) is out for the season and Shaquil Griffin is recovering from a concussion.

There were rumblings that Shead could make a return following the team's bye week in early October, but the depth corner has struggled to come back from the torn ACL he suffered back in January. With his absence this week, it's fair to wonder if he'll return at any point this season. For now, the team will continue to lean on the likes of rookie Shaquill Griffin and Jeremy Lane at the right cornerback spot.

Shead (knee) will remain on the Physically Unable to Perform list and not return to practice this week, Gregg Bell of The News Tribune reports.
Shead was hopeful to return by Week 7 or 8 this season after tearing his ACL in January. The goal was apparently a little optimistic, as he will need some practice time before suiting up on Sundays again. Week 10 against the Cardinals figures to be the earliest potential return date for the 28-year-old at this point.
