Jared Abbrederis: Announces retirement from football
Abbrederis posted Friday on his personal Twitter account that he has retired from professional football.
A fifth-round pick of the Packers in 2014, Abbrederis suited up for 22 regular-season contests with Green Bay and Detroit across his four years in the NFL, finishing his career with 13 receptions for 163 yards and no touchdowns. Abbrederis' most significant action came during the Packers' 2015 postseason run, when a slew of injuries to other wideouts vaulted him up the depth chart and allowed him to pick up 16 targets over two playoff outings.

Jared Abbrederis: Waived by Lions
Abbrederis was waived by the Lions on Tuesday.
Abbrederis beat out Jace Billingsley at the end of the preseason for the fifth and final spot on the Lions depth chart, but it's Billingsley who the team decided to bring back this week. The third-year pro Abbrederis played a reserve role on the Lions' offense for the majority of the season, recording three receptions for 44 yards in seven contests. He'll now look to catch on with another roster or practice squad in need of some wideout depth.

With Golden Tate, Marvin Jones, Kenny Golladay and TJ Jones all seemingly locks for the final roster, Abbrederis entered Thursday's game in a competition with Jace Billingsley for a potential No. 5 gig. Abbrederis certainly didn't impress, but Billingsley clearly didn't either, as the latter caught only two passes for two yards while muffing both a kickoff and punt. The future of both players with the Lions should be determined over the weekend.

Abbrederis caught all three targets for 26 yards and a touchdown during Friday's preseason game against the Patriots.
Abbrederis did well to find the end zone Friday, as the battle for the No. 4 and potential No. 5 receiver jobs is coming down to the wire. However, Jace Billingsley seemed slightly more impressive and also flashed on special teams -- an area Abbrederis didn't. The Wisconsin product will have one last opportunity to impress when Detroit heads to Buffalo for the preseason finale Thursday.

Abbrederis caught two of three targets for 24 yards during Saturday's preseason game against the Jets.
Abbrederis played in 41 of 66 offensive snaps Saturday -- which is 20 percent more than the next closest receiver -- so it appears Lions management is taking a long look at the Wisconsin product as they look to solidify the bottom of the depth chart. With Golden Tate, Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay all looking like locks to make the final roster, Abbrederis is essentially competing with T.J. Jones, Jace Billingsley and Keshawn Martin for the No. 4 and a potential No. 5 receiver job.

Lions' Jared Abbrederis: Turning heads with route running
Abbrederis, along with TJ Jones, appears to be well ahead of his competition from a route-running standpoint, Justin Rogers of The Detroit News reports.
Behind starters Golden Tate and Marvin Jones, just Kenny Golladay -- a 2017 third-round pick -- is a lock to make the Lions' final roster come September. Only one or two more receivers are expected to join them and the pair of fourth-year receivers in Abbrederis and Jones appear to be the frontrunners for those jobs. Jace Billingsley is in the mix as well, as are Keshawn Martin and Ryan Spadola, but the latter pair would likely only make the roster for what they could provide on special teams. Things may change when the pads come on in training camp, but Abbrederis (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) is just as tall and nearly as heavy as anyone he's competing with, so his slender size shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Abbrederis will compete for the No. 3 receiver job this preseason, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.
After being released by the Packers due to his injury history, Abbrederis signed a reserve/future contract with the Lions in January. Having played the slot in Green Bay, the third-year wideout seems like a natural fit for the No. 3 spot behind Marvin Jones and Golden Tate in Detroit. However, he'll have to fend off competition from TJ Jones, Jace Billingsley and rookie Kenny Golladay.
