Free agent defensive end Andre Carter, who had 10 of his 73 career sacks last season, worked out for the Raiders on Tuesday afternoon.
There was no immediate word from the Raiders on whether they expected to sign Carter.
“We’re going to shake all the bushes and see what falls out, and if we feel like we’ve got something that can helps us, we’re going to do it,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said.
Carter had 10 sacks last year for the Patriots and was voted to the Pro Bowl, but he suffered a season-ending injury to his left quadriceps on Dec. 18 against Denver and underwent surgery.
As Carter left the Raiders’ practice facility, he declined to answer questions about his workout.
“I’ve got to stay low key,” Carter said. “If it works out, God willing.”
In defensive tackles Richard Seymour and Tommy Kelly, the Raiders have two of the best interior pass rushers in the league. But neither of their defensive ends – Matt Shaughnessy and Lamarr Houston – is an explosive rusher off the edge.
Carter has more career sacks than any current player on the team. Seymour is the current leader with 54½.
Carter, a former Cal Bear, was drafted seventh overall by the 49ers in 2001, going one spot after New England drafted Seymour. Carter had three previous double-digit sack years before last season: 12 ½ for the 49ers in 2002, and 10 ½ in 2007 and 11 in 2009 for Washington.
