  • Johan Quezada: Heads to free agency

    Quezada elected free agency Wednesday.

The 29-year-old Quezada reached the big leagues for the first time since 2020 when the Marlins selected his contract from Triple-A Jacksonville in late April, but he was lit up for three earned runs while retiring just two batters over his lone relief appearance before he was moved off the 40-man roster. Quezada returned to Jacksonville and compiled a 4.39 ERA and 1.73 WHIP over 41 total innings for the affiliate before closing the season on the 7-day injured list.

  • Marlins' Johan Quezada: DFA'd on Wednesday

The Marlins designated Quezada for assignment Wednesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Quezada vacates the 40-man roster after a woeful performance Tuesday in which he walked five and allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning in a loss to Atlanta. The appearance marked Quezada's first big-league action since 2020, when he pitched in three games for the Marlins.

  • Marlins' Johan Quezada: Contract selected

Quezada had his contract selected by the Marlins on Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Quezada will join the bullpen ahead of Friday night's series opener against the Cubs after posting a strong 2.35 ERA over 7.2 innings this season between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Jacksonville. The 28-year-old right-hander figures to operate in low-leverage spots.

  • Cardinals' Johan Quezada: Remains with Cardinals

Quezada cleared waivers and was outrighted to Double-A Springfield on Wednesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Quezada was designated for assignment Tuesday but will remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 27-year-old will report to the Double-A level, where he allowed 14 earned runs with a 14:6 K:BB over 11.2 innings last season.

  • Cardinals' Johan Quezada: Removed from 40-man roster

The Cardinals designated Quezada for assignment Tuesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for designated hitter/first baseman Albert Pujols, who returns to St. Louis on a one-year deal for what will likely be the final season of his prolific career. Quezada made his big-league debut out of the Miami bullpen in 2020, but after being acquired by the Cardinals last February, he pitched exclusively in the minors in 2021. The Cardinals will hope to pass him through waivers and stash him in the Triple-A Memphis bullpen for the upcoming season.

  • Cardinals' Johan Quezada: Activated from injured list

Quezada (illness) was activated off the injured list at Double-A Springfield on Sunday.

Quezada dealt with a lat strain early in the season and then was caught up in Springfield's COVID-19 outbreak in August. Junior Fernandez (shoulder) shifted to the 60-day injured list to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

  • Cardinals' Johan Quezada: Rehabbing in FCL

Quezada (COVID-19 protocols) began a rehab assignment with the Cardinals' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate Aug. 31. He's appeared in three FCL games, working three innings while giving up two earned runs on two hits and a walk.

Since Quezada was placed on the 60-day injured list Aug. 11 due to COVID-19 protocols, he won't be eligible to rejoin Double-A Springfield before its season ends, but he looks like he'll head into the offseason healthy. Expect him to make regular appearances in the FCL or with one of the Cardinals' other lower-level affiliates before the minor-league season ends.

  • Cardinals' Johan Quezada: Placed on 60-day IL

Quezada (COVID-19) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Aug. 11, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

This opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for Jack Flaherty. Quezada will no be ineligible to return during the minor-league season. He logged an 8.31 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 13 innings over 10 appearances. It's odd for a COVID-19 designation to turn into a 60-day IL placement, so perhaps there's another injury he is dealing with that has not been reported.

  • Cardinals' Johan Quezada: Joins MiLB COVID-19 IL

Double-A Springfield placed Quezada on the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday.

Springfield is dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak among its roster, as six players were placed on the injured list Tuesday. The affiliate hasn't announced whether Quezada's placement on the IL is the result of him testing positive for the coronavirus, or if he was merely identified as a close contact of an infected person or persons. Quezada has made six appearances this season for Springfield, posting a 12.91 ERA and 2.64 WHIP across 7.2 innings.

  • Cardinals' Johan Quezada: Initiates rehab assignment

Quezada (lat) began a rehab assignment with the Cardinals' rookie-level Florida Complex League earlier this month. He's struck out six in four scoreless innings across three outings.

Quezada opened the season on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Memphis with a right lat injury. Memphis activated him from the IL on Tuesday and assigned him to Double-A Springfield, so Quezada has seemingly been deemed healthy following his three-game rehab stint.

  • Cardinals' Johan Quezada: Dealing with lat issue

Quezada is dealing with a lat injury and was placed on the minor-league injured list Thursday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Quezada has begun a throwing program but will be unavailable to begin the Triple-A season. The Cardinals have said that the right-hander is still several weeks away from having a timetable for his return to game action. Quezada made three major-league appearances in 2020, posting a 9.00 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in three innings.

  • Cardinals' Johan Quezada: Optioned to minors

Quezada was optioned to minor-league camp by the Cardinals on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was traded from the Phillies to the Cardinals in February but was unable to make the Opening Day roster with his new team. Quezada made his big-league debut with the Marlins in 2020 and allowed three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk over three innings.

  • Cardinals' Johan Quezada: Traded to Cardinals

Quezada was traded from the Phillies to the Cardinals on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports.

Quezada was claimed off waivers by Philadelphia at the end of October, but he'll now join the Cardinals ahead of spring training. The right-hander hadn't pitched above the High-A level prior to making his major-league debut in 2020. Over three relief appearances for the Marlins, Quezada allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two over three innings. If he makes the big-league roster with St. Louis, he should pitch mainly in low-leverage situations.

  • Phillies' Johan Quezada: Claimed by Phillies

Quezada was claimed off waivers by the Phillies on Friday, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports.

The Phillies' bullpen had one of the worst seasons of all time in 2020, posting a 7.06 ERA as a unit. Quezada could presumably help his new team, though he hadn't pitched above High-A prior to this season and threw just three innings for the Marlins this year, so he shouldn't be expected to fill a significant role any time soon.

  • Marlins' Johan Quezada: Sent to alternate training site

Quezada was optioned to the alternate training site Friday.

The 26-year-old had his contract selected by Miami last week and will return to the alternate site after his first taste of major-league action. Quezada threw two scoreless frames in his first two outings, but in his third appearance he gave up three runs on four hits.

Quezada had his contract selected by the Marlins on Friday.

The 26-year-old will provide some bullpen depth for the Marlins for the final few weeks of the season. Quezada finished 2019 at High-A and had a 3.44 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 49:28 K:BB over 52.1 innings while in the Twins' organization.
