  • Dustin McGowan: Takes coaching job

McGowan was hired as a high school baseball coach in the Tallahassee area Thursday, Joey Lamar of WCTV reports.

McGowan hasn't played professional baseball since May of 2018, when he was released by the Marlins, and it would appear that his move to coaching could officially put an end to his playing career. If the 38-year-old is indeed hanging up the cleats, he finishes his career in the majors with 540 strikeouts, 35 wins, a 4.50 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 291 appearances with the Blue Jays, Phillies and Marlins.

  • Marlins' Dustin McGowan: Rejoining Marlins on minors deal

The Marlins signed McGowan to a minor-league contract Friday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

McGowan spent spring training with the Rays on a minor-league deal prior to being released in early March. The 36-year-old posted a 4.75 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with 64 strikeouts over 77.2 innings (63 appearances) as a long-relief man for the Marlins in 2017. The right-hander would likely serve a similar role if he joins the big-league roster this season, but for now he will report to Triple-A New Orleans after putting in some work at extended spring training.

McGowan (5-0) earned his fifth win by allowing one run over 1.1 innings and recorded one strikeout in Wednesday's win over St. Louis.

  • Marlins' Dustin McGowan: Holding steady in 2017

McGowan has an ERA of 2.84 with a 31:14 K:BB in 38 innings this season.

It's the 35-year-old's second season in Miami, and this one is starting to shape up extremely similar to the first one. Last season, McGowan had an ERA of 2.82 with a WHIP of 1.22 in 67 innings, and is posting just a slightly worse ERA with a WHIP of 1.16 this year. Despite the consistency, the veteran reliever hasn't faced many batters in stressful situations, limiting his fantasy potential in even the deepest leagues.

  • Marlins' Dustin McGowan: Gets win Tuesday with strong relief effort

McGowan allowed only two hits, including a solo home run, while striking out three over three innings of relief to pick up the win in Tuesday's victory over the Phillies.

He came into the game after Justin Nicolino injured his finger on a bunt in the bottom of the third inning and, a mistake by Howie Kendrick aside, McGowan looked sharp in earning his second win of the season. The right-hander has been solid in long relief on a staff whose starters rarely go deep, and he now has a 3.86 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 24:11 K:BB in 25.2 innings. If the Marlins' offense continues its recent improvement, McGowan could vulture a handful of additional wins over the rest of the season.

  • Marlins' Dustin McGowan: Eating innings for last-place Miami

McGowan has allowed 10 earned runs across 22.2 innings out of the Marlins' bullpen this season.

The veteran right-hander has given up four runs on nine hits and four walks over 9.2 innings in May, and the Marlins have lost the past six games in which he's appeared. McGowan is largely relegated to mop-up duty at this point, but those opportunities could be plentiful if Miami continues to struggle.
