  • Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Heads to independent ranks

Nieuwenhuis signed a contract Tuesday with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, Jordan Lauterbach of Newsday reports.

Nieuwenhuis was either unable to receive or unwilling to accept a minor-league contract in free agency this winter after slashing .214/.336/.336 across 324 plate appearances at Triple-A Tacoma in the Seattle organization in 2018. The 31-year-old will look to keep his career alive in the independent ranks before perhaps resurfacing in affiliated ball later this season.

Nieuwenhuis was released by the Mariners on Thursday.

  • Mariners' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Hamstring healthy again

Nieuwenhuis (hamstring) went 0-for-1 in his return to action Wednesday.

The non-roster invitee replaced Mitch Haniger in right field after missing over a week of action due to injury. Even with the injuries that have struck Seattle's primary outfielders, Nieuwenhuis likely won't make the team after collecting just one hit in 11 at-bats this spring.

  • Mariners' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Expected back early next week

Nieuwenhuis (hamstring) should be ready for a return to action by early next week, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

The veteran outfielder last saw game action last Thursday, but he appears to be inching closer towards a return. Nieuwenhuis is competing for a reserve outfielder role this spring, although his sluggish start (1-for-10 with an RBI) and subsequent injury have naturally set his job quest back.

  • Mariners' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Dealing with hamstring strain

Nieuwenhuis has a hamstring strain, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

At this point, it's still unclear when Nieuwenhuis picked up the issue or how long it will keep him sidelined. It was recently announced that Ben Gamel (oblique) is expected to miss the start of the season, which leaves an opportunity for Nieuwenhuis to potentially break camp with the team in a reserve outfield role if he's able to get back on the field sooner rather than later. Consider him day-to-day for the time being.

  • Mariners' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Inks minors pact with Mariners

Nieuwenhuis signed a minor-league deal with the Mariners, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

He hit .115/.258/.269 in 31 plate appearances with the Brewers last season and was even a below league average hitter (94 wRC+) with Triple-A Colorado Springs, so it's not surprising he had to settle for a minor-league deal. The Mariners don't have a lot star power in the outfield, but they have plenty of options that are either more established or offer more upside than Nieuwenhuis, so look for him to spend most of the year at Triple-A Tacoma.

  • Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Hits open market

Nieuwenhuis will become a free agent following the conclusion of the 2017 season.

Nieuwenhuis was designated for assignment by Milwaukee in late July after appearing in just 16 games with the club this season, slashing a dreadful .115/.258/.269 in 31 plate appearances. The 30-year-old had been a consistent presence in the big leagues since 2012, but will have to fight during spring training to make a major-league roster following this past season.

  • Brewers' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Outrighted to Colorado Springs

Nieuwenhuis was outrighted to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Thursday.

Nieuwenhuis will serve as organizational outfield depth moving forward after being sent off from the 40-man roster Monday. He has only played 16 games with the Brewers this season, hitting just .115/.258/.269 in 26 big-league at-bats.

  • Brewers' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: DFA'd Monday

Nieuwenhuis was designated for assignment by the Brewers on Monday.

The Brewers needed to clear room for recently acquired Jeremy Jeffress, and Nieuwenhuis was the chosen roster casualty. He cleared waivers earlier in the year, so the Brewers are hoping to pass him through once again and assign him to Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he would continue to serve as organizational outfield depth.

  • Brewers' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Called up Saturday

Nieuwenhuis was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Saturday.

Nieuwenhuis just recently returned to action at Colorado Springs after taking time away to deal with some personal matters. He figures to see only sporadic opportunities while up, as the Brewers' starting outfield of Ryan Braun, Lewis Brinson and Domingo Santana is set and Hernan Perez is the top reserve.

  • Brewers' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Returns to action with Colorado Springs

Nieuwenhuis (personal) is 4-for-18 (.222) since returning from the temporarily inactive list on July 18.

Captain Kirk homered in his first game back from attending to personal matters, but his bat fell more silent since his big return. Nieuwenhuis still projects mostly as an organizational depth piece moving forward given that there are many other high-profile outfield prospects clamoring for playing time in Milwaukee.

  • Brewers' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Placed on inactive list

Nieuwenhuis was placed on the temporary inactive list Sunday.

Nieuwenhuis will likely return to the fold in a few days since this list is used for short absences due to a wide number of personal reasons. The 29-year-old is set to be out for a minimum of three days but should be able to return shortly after depending on the situation.

  • Brewers' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Outrighted to Triple-A

Nieuwenhuis was outrighted to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Monday.

Nieuwenhuis cleared waivers after being DFA'd by the Brewers last week, and it appears he's accepted his assignment to Triple-A. He joins an outfield stacked with top prospects Lewis Brinson, Ryan Cordell and Brett Phillips. It's unclear what Nieuwenhuis' role with the Brewers will be moving forward, seeing as there doesn't appear to be a clear path to playing time in Milwaukee's outfield anytime soon.

  • Brewers' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: DFA'd Friday

Nieuwenhuis was designated for assignment Friday.

Nieuwenhuis has been relatively ineffective to begin the season, going 2-for-25 with one home run and 15 strikeouts in limited playing time. The future is unclear for the 29-year-old outfielder, but he could be destined for a return to the minors should he clear initial waivers. Left-hander Brent Suter takes his spot on the roster.

  • Brewers' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Reaches base three times in spot start

Nieuwenhuis went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run scored in Thursday's victory over the Cardinals.

Nieuwenhuis made a spot start in center field Thursday and made the most of the opportunity, reaching base three times. He has started just five games this season, but if Keon Broxton continues to struggle with the bat, he could find himself in the lineup a bit more often.

  • Brewers' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Pops homer after replacing Broxton

Nieuwenhuis took over in center field Thursday after Keon Broxton (nose) was hit by a pitch, going 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a 2-1 loss to the Rockies.

Broxton looks like he'll avoid a DL stint but is considered day-to-day with a small nasal fracture, so Nieuwenhius could see additional playing time this weekend while the Brewers host the Cubs. With lefty Brett Anderson taking the mound Friday, though, don't be surprised if Hernan Perez gets the nod in center instead should Broxton still be unavailable.
