Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Heads to independent ranks
Nieuwenhuis signed a contract Tuesday with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, Jordan Lauterbach of Newsday reports.
Nieuwenhuis was either unable to receive or unwilling to accept a minor-league contract in free agency this winter after slashing .214/.336/.336 across 324 plate appearances at Triple-A Tacoma in the Seattle organization in 2018. The 31-year-old will look to keep his career alive in the independent ranks before perhaps resurfacing in affiliated ball later this season.

Nieuwenhuis was released by the Mariners on Thursday.
Nieuwenhuis was cut loose after hitting .214 with four homers and 31 RBI through 80 games at Triple-A Tacoma. He last surfaced in the big leagues in 2017 with Milwaukee.

Mariners' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Hamstring healthy again
Nieuwenhuis (hamstring) went 0-for-1 in his return to action Wednesday.
The non-roster invitee replaced Mitch Haniger in right field after missing over a week of action due to injury. Even with the injuries that have struck Seattle's primary outfielders, Nieuwenhuis likely won't make the team after collecting just one hit in 11 at-bats this spring.

Mariners' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Expected back early next week
Nieuwenhuis (hamstring) should be ready for a return to action by early next week, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.
The veteran outfielder last saw game action last Thursday, but he appears to be inching closer towards a return. Nieuwenhuis is competing for a reserve outfielder role this spring, although his sluggish start (1-for-10 with an RBI) and subsequent injury have naturally set his job quest back.

Nieuwenhuis has a hamstring strain, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
At this point, it's still unclear when Nieuwenhuis picked up the issue or how long it will keep him sidelined. It was recently announced that Ben Gamel (oblique) is expected to miss the start of the season, which leaves an opportunity for Nieuwenhuis to potentially break camp with the team in a reserve outfield role if he's able to get back on the field sooner rather than later. Consider him day-to-day for the time being.

Mariners' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Inks minors pact with Mariners
Nieuwenhuis signed a minor-league deal with the Mariners, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.
He hit .115/.258/.269 in 31 plate appearances with the Brewers last season and was even a below league average hitter (94 wRC+) with Triple-A Colorado Springs, so it's not surprising he had to settle for a minor-league deal. The Mariners don't have a lot star power in the outfield, but they have plenty of options that are either more established or offer more upside than Nieuwenhuis, so look for him to spend most of the year at Triple-A Tacoma.

Nieuwenhuis will become a free agent following the conclusion of the 2017 season.
Nieuwenhuis was designated for assignment by Milwaukee in late July after appearing in just 16 games with the club this season, slashing a dreadful .115/.258/.269 in 31 plate appearances. The 30-year-old had been a consistent presence in the big leagues since 2012, but will have to fight during spring training to make a major-league roster following this past season.

Captain Kirk homered in his first game back from attending to personal matters, but his bat fell more silent since his big return. Nieuwenhuis still projects mostly as an organizational depth piece moving forward given that there are many other high-profile outfield prospects clamoring for playing time in Milwaukee.

Brewers' Kirk Nieuwenhuis: Pops homer after replacing Broxton
Nieuwenhuis took over in center field Thursday after Keon Broxton (nose) was hit by a pitch, going 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a 2-1 loss to the Rockies.
Broxton looks like he'll avoid a DL stint but is considered day-to-day with a small nasal fracture, so Nieuwenhius could see additional playing time this weekend while the Brewers host the Cubs. With lefty Brett Anderson taking the mound Friday, though, don't be surprised if Hernan Perez gets the nod in center instead should Broxton still be unavailable.
