Gore said Saturday in an interview with TheSFNiners.com that he plans to sign a one-day contract with the 49ers soon to formally announce his retirement from the NFL.

The soon-to-be 39-year-old running back didn't play in 2021, though he previously noted that he kept himself in playing shape in the event an opportunity emerged with a team. He'll now formally call a close to a career that began in 2005, when San Francisco selected him with its third-round pick in the draft. Over a 16-year run in the NFL that includes stops with the 49ers, Colts, Dolphins, Bills and Jets, the durable Gore appeared in 241 regular-season games and logged 16,000 rushing yards, 3,985 receiving yards and 99 touchdowns. His rushing total is the third-highest mark in league history.
