  • Bills' Derek Anderson: Announces retirement

Anderson announced Thursday that he is retiring from the NFL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Anderson is calling it a career after 15 NFL seasons. A career backup, Anderson totaled 10,878 yards, 60 touchdowns and 64 interceptions across 78 appearances for the Browns, Cardinals, Panthers and Bills. His retirement means that Matt Barkley will likely be the backup quarterback in Buffalo in 2019, while undrafted free agent Tyree Jackson now has a better chance to land the No. 3 job.

  • Bills' Derek Anderson: Inks extension

Anderson signed a one-year contract extension with the Bills on Monday, Chris Brown of the team's official site reports.

Buffalo previously extended top backup Matt Barkley earlier this month, so the decision to re-sign Anderson indicates the team at least tentatively plans to proceed with three quarterbacks on the roster in 2019. Though he underwhelmed across his two appearances with Buffalo this season, completing 42 of 70 passes for 465 yards, no touchdowns and four interceptions, the 35-year-old was a positive resource for rookie Josh Allen, who displayed signs of growth down the stretch. So long as Allen and Barkley are both healthy next season, Anderson will continue to offer most of his value as a mentor to the younger signal-callers.

  • Bills' Derek Anderson: Healthy scratch Week 15

Anderson is once again inactive Sunday against Detroit, despite having cleared concussion protocol.

Anderson could be available if Buffalo needed him on the active roster, but the team will instead roll with Josh Allen as the starter and Matt Barkley as the primary backup.

  • Bills' Derek Anderson: Finally clear of concussion

After several weeks, Anderson has cleared the concussion protocol, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports.

Anderson suffered the concussion all the way back in Week 8, but he's finally received full clearance for all football activities. Unfortunately for Anderson, Matt Barkley looks to have passed him on the QB depth chart, and he may even be a healthy scratch this week against Detroit.

  • Bills' Derek Anderson: Logs limited practice

Anderson remains in the NFL's concussion protocol and will be limited at practice Wednesday, Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic reports.

Anderson's continued involvement in practice is a good sign, though he will have to graduate to full participation to rejoin the action Sunday. He still has a couple of days ahead to make that jump, which could position him as a backup option for Sunday's game against the Lions.
