Kaaya was waived by the Colts on Feb. 8 after spending the 2018 season on injured reserve due to an undisclosed injury. The 2017 sixth-round pick has yet to earn a job at the NFL level, but he showed potential during his tenure at the University of Miami. He'll compete with Tom Savage for the No. 3 QB job this offseason.

After being drafted by Detroit in the sixth round of the draft in April, Kaaya was waived three times by two different teams before ultimately joining the Lions' practice squad in late October. The Colts evidently recognized some potential in the 22-year-old, who will get a look during their final week of practice of the season. Lions' Brad Kaaya: Showing improvement
Kaaya has shown improvement in directing the Lions offense, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports. "Where I am now compared to OTAs, I'd say is night and day," Kaaya said.
Though Kaaya seemingly had a hard time directing the offense at first, the rookie seems to be taking steps in the right direction. In fact, head coach Jim Caldwell recently praised Kaaya's ability to "digest and regurgitate" a "voluminous" playbook. Unfortunately, the Lions probably won't carry more than two quarterbacks into the regular season, so he still seems destined for the practice squad.

There's a chance the Lions carry three quarterbacks into the regular season, but that seems unlikely with Jake Rudock proving capable as a backup. The smart money is on Kaaya opening the season on the practice squad.
