J.J. Wilcox: Likely to join Falcons soon
Wilcox visited with the Falcons on Wednesday, and it is expected that he soon will re-sign with the team, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Though not yet official, Atlanta appears to be bringing back a familiar face in Wilcox after he was cut by the team Sept. 4. The Falcons secondary has been ravaged by injury, as A.J. Terrell (reserve-COVID-19), Darqueze Dennard (hamstring), Keanu Neal (hamstring) and Ricardo Allen (elbow) were all inactive for Week 4, and that was before Damontae Kazee suffered a torn Achilles during Monday night's loss to Green Bay.

J.J. Wilcox: Parting ways with Falcons
Wilcox was cut by Atlanta on Friday, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
The Falcons brought in Wilcox to provide secondary depth for the 2019 season, but he suffered a torn ACL at the start of training camp and did not end up appearing in a single game. Wilcox was re-signed by Atlanta in early August, but he ultimately was unable to carve out a backup role at safety for the upcoming season. The 2013 Cowboys third-round pick is now available for a team seeking veteran assistance in the secondary.

Falcons' J.J. Wilcox: Returns to Atlanta secondary
The Falcons have re-signed Wilcox, Will McFadden of the team's official site reports.
Wilcox originally signed with the team last April, but his 2019 campaign was derailed by a torn ACL in July. Now that he's been officially brought back by the Falcons and presumably ready to practice, the 2013 third-rounder will provide the team with some needed depth at safety.

Falcons' J.J. Wilcox: Set to return to Falcons
Wilcox (knee-ACL) is prepared to sign a one-year contract with the Falcons, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
The 29-year-old must first pass a physical and COVID-19 screening before joining the team, but those seem to be the only factors holding up the transaction from becoming official. After spending his 2018 campaign with the Colts and Jets, Wilcox signed on with Atlanta heading into 2019, and he was projected to potentially fill in a second-string role at safety before an ACL tear in late July cut his season short. Now nearing a return to the field following a long recuperation process, Wilcox provides further depth to the Falcons' secondary after the team brought in veteran Darqueze Dennard earlier this week.

Wilcox suffered a season-ending ACL tear during the first day of Atlanta's training camp. He appeared in two games with the Colts last season, recording four tackles (three solo). With Wilcox out for 2019, Damontae Kazee will likely step up as the primary backup to Keanu Neal (knee).

Falcons' J.J. Wilcox: Devastating injury at start of camp
Wilcox suffered a torn ACL at practice Monday and is out for the season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Wilcox went down in a heap and had to be helped off the field by teammates, and he was later seen limping noticeably before being escorted to the locker room by trainers. Coach Dan Quinn did not specify the nature or severity of the issue immediately after practice, but it was revealed soon thereafter that the 28-year-old safety's season would be over before it truly got underway. Wilcox was not expected to start over Keanu Neal (knee-ACL) by any stretch, but he was certainly considered to be a steady rotational player who could see substantial regular-season playing time. Now that Wilcox is out for 2019, Damontae Kazee would likely be the No. 2 option at strong safety if Neal were to miss time.

Jets' J.J. Wilcox: Reneges on 49ers, heads to Jets
Wilcox backed out of a deal with the 49ers and is expected to ink a deal with the Jets instead, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Despite agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with the 49ers, Wilcox backed out for unclear reasons. Cimini had sources report that it was either stage fright or a desire to play for Jets head coach Todd Bowles. Either way, Wilcox should be in green and white come Week 1. Bowles has expressed that all 22 starting positions are up for grabs, but Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye both manned the two safety roles as rookies in 2017 and will be looking to make major strides in their development this offseason. This will make it tough for Wilcox to earn a starting job. The 27-year-old slotted into a limited role with the Steelers last season and was held to 12 tackles in 12 games, so he projects as a rotational safety in 2018.

Wilcox agreed with the 49ers on Tuesday on a one-year deal, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Wilcox was released by the Steelers back in April after he appeared in 12 games and recorded 12 tackles and an interception in his lone season with the club. With Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward locked in as the starting safeties in San Francisco, Wilcox looks bound to compete for a depth role in the 49ers secondary while also seeing reps on special teams.

Steelers' J.J. Wilcox: Grabs first interception of season Sunday
Wilcox recorded five tackles (four solo) and an interception in Sunday's 23-17 overtime loss to the Bears.
Wilcox showed no lingering effects from the concussion he sustained last week, picking off a pass thrown behind Zach Miller at the Chicago 21, which led to a tying field goal by Chris Boswell midway through the fourth quarter. This was his first interception of the season and the sixth of his career. He'll look to add to that total in Week 4 against Baltimore, as the Pittsburgh defense recorded two interceptions in their two games against the Ravens last season.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday that Wilcox is at the tail end of protocol, so it looks like his clearance could come this week. Until the Steelers can provide an official update on Wilcox's status, the safety should be considered day-to-day with the concussion.
