  • Travis Swanson: Hanging up cleats

Swanson announced his retirement from football Saturday, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM Radio reports.

Swanson will call it a career after five seasons in the NFL. The Texas native appeared in 53 games -- starting in all but nine -- for the Lions over his first four seasons in the league. Swanson last played for the Dolphins, starting in 11 of 12 games during the 2018 season.

Swanson (ankle) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Patriots, Alain Poupart of the Dolphins' official site reports.

Swanson continues to nurse an ankle injury initially sustained Nov. 25, making his status for Sunday's divisional tilt against the Patriots murky at best. If the 27-year-old were to remain sidelined Week 14, Wesley Johnson would be in line to draw another start at center.

Swanson re-signed with the Dolphins on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Swanson was waived by the Dolphins on Tuesday.

  • Jets' Travis Swanson: Inks deal with Jets

Swanson signed a contract with the Jets on Tuesday, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reports.

Swanson, a former third-round selection of the Lions, spent his first four seasons in Detroit, starting 42 of 53 games during the stint. However, he missed the final six games of last season due to a concussion -- an injury the center now disputes, claiming he instead had a bad reaction to the medicine he received for the injury. The Jets also brought in former Redskins center Spencer Long (quadriceps), who figures to start the season atop the depth chart. However, Long is returning from a torn quadriceps injury last season, which could give Swanson an opportunity to take over starting duties should Long be sidelined heading into training camp.

  • Lions' Travis Swanson: Misdiagnosed with concussion

Swanson, who ended the 2017 season on injured reserve, claims he did not suffer a concussion, CBS Detroit reports.

Swanson claims he didn't actually suffer a concussion but had a bad reaction to medicine he was given to treat a potential concussion. When he stopped taking the medicine, Swanson said he no longer experienced any concussion-like symptoms. Considering he also suffered a concussion in 2016 and is set to become an unrestricted free agent, it's evident he wants teams to know he doesn't have a history of serious head injuries -- something that could hamper his ability to land a new deal.

Swanson (concussion) was placed on injured reserve Friday, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.

    Swanson (concussion) missed practice Thursday.

Swanson was thought to have been close to clearing concussion protocol after logging a full practice Wednesday, but his total lack of availability Thursday seemingly nullifies that notion. He still has Friday to prove his health, or else the fourth-year center will likely end the 2017 campaign having logged three consecutive DNPs.

  • Lions' Travis Swanson: Remains in concussion protocol

Coach Jim Caldwell said Thursday that Swanson is still in concussion protocol, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

The Lions have a longer week after playing Saturday against the Bears, but Swanson's status still looks to be in doubt for Sunday in Cincinnati. Swanson would likely have to participate in at least one practice this week to have a chance to return to the field, but given that this is the second time the center has had a concussion keep him out for multiple weeks, the team will likely take a very cautious approach.
