Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said rookie receiver Greg Childs will undergo surgery on Monday after rupturing both patellar tendons in his knees during Saturday's practice.

Childs, a fourth-round pick, was placed on waived-injured status and is out for the season.

“His injury was tough. The fact that he ruptured both patellar tendons, and he’s going to have to have surgery on both knees -- that’s a hard one,” Frazier said. “We don’t know what the long-term prognosis is. We’re all hoping for the best. Our players, it was hard for them. Obviously, it was hard for Greg and his family. We’re all pulling for him in this situation.”

WR Jarius Wright, Childs’ teammate since junior high, was feeling for his longtime friend. Wright also played with Childs at Arkansas when Childs first injured the patellar tendon of his right knee. Wright said that Childs was in good spirits, but said the injury was tough to watch -- especially since he had seen both injuries.

Frazier reiterated that Childs remained positive he would be back.

“After the scrimmage he was distraught, as you would suspect,” said Frazier. “But he really had a frame of mind where because he had experienced adversity before, he really feels as though he is going to bounce back from this. He’s going to work extremely hard and get back to play again. That was his attitude. He said to me, ‘Coach, I’ll be back. I am going to work extremely hard just like I did before, and I am going to be back out here and help the Vikings.’ That’s a great attitude under the circumstances.”

If Childs clears waivers, he can be brought back onto the team and placed on IR. In his place on the roster, the Vikings resigned WR A.J. Love, who was cut Saturday to make room for recently signed OL Bridger Buche.
