The battle to be the Jets starting quarterback wasn't the only offensive battle happening in Jets training camp, there was also a battle to the team's starting fullback.
That battle's now over though because Lex Hilliard, who started nine games at fullback for the Jets last season, will have season-ending surgery on a broken scapula, according to ProFootballTalk.com. The shoulder injury occurred during practice on Tuesday.
Hilliard's been banged up for most of training camp, the fifth-year fullback didn't play in either of the Jets first two preseason games because of a rib injury. The 29-year-old played in a total of 12 games last year for the Jets and rushed for 31 yards.
Unless the Jets decide to bring in another fullback, the starting job will go to rookie Tommy Bohanon. The seventh-round pick out of Wake Forest has seen action in both of New York's first two preseason games. Through the first two weeks of preseason play, Bohanon has totaled three catches for 12 yards and one carry for five yards.
