Bryant McKinnie may be at the Ravens' practice facility but he isn't ready to practice, according to his coach.

Coach John Harbaugh confirmed he and the veteran left tackle had a long conversation this morning about what transpired this past week. Harbaugh then confirmed McKinnie had a strained back sustained from a fall at his South Florida home.

"Like I've said many times, I think the world of B-Mac," Harbaugh said. "I believe he's a hard worker, I think he's been working hard. But he's not ready to practice yet. When he's ready to practice he'll be out there."

Harbaugh said McKinnie finished his physical Monday morning but it's unknown whether he's taken his conditioning test yet. The Ravens moved McKinnie off the reserve/did not report list.

By missing the first three practices McKinnie could be subjected to a $30,000 per day fine at the organization's discretion. Harbaugh's understanding of the situation is that McKinnie will be fined.

"The CBA still applies as far as I know but I haven't talked to (general manager) Ozzie (Newsome) about that," he said. "But my assumption is it will apply."

Injury update: With almost a week's worth of camp under its belt, Baltimore's beginning to be banged up a bit.

In addition to tight end Dennis Pitta possibly breaking his hand, rookie outside linebacker Courtney Upshaw missed practice with a bruised shoulder. Harbaugh doesn't believe the injury to be serious, saying cornerback Jimmy Smith had something similar on Saturday and was able to return to practice.

Wide receiver Tandon Doss, who's off to a good start in camp, didn't practice with a hamstring tweak. Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata also has a hamstring injury and missed his fourth consecutive practice. Defensive end Pernell McPhee, who had his knee scoped this offseason, is working on lateral movement and nearing the end of his rehab.

Tackle Ramon Harewood (ankle), receiver David Reed (ACL) and offensive lineman Jah Reid (calf) also missed practice.

Getting testy: In one-on-one drills, receiver Torrey Smith caught a tough pass against cornerback Cary Williams that appeared legal on both sides.

But Williams accidentally poked Smith in the eye, which upset the second-year wideout briefly. While those two were arguing, Doss, missing practice with a minor hamstring injury and wearing shorts, joined the conversation in defense of Smith. Williams then chewed out Doss, which was probably deserved.

Williams played through almost half of the 2011 season with a torn labrum in his hip and didn't miss much practice time, if any. Rule of thumb in the NFL: Don't talk trash when you're injured, especially when the one you're jawing at practiced and played through something far more painful than what you're missing practice for.

Kicking competition: It was another day of parity among both Billy Cundiff and Justin Tucker. Both went 3-for-4 and missed kicks over 50 yards. Both also made attempts from 52. Tucker's miss was the first misfire this preseason.
