Coach John Harbaugh confirmed what was expected, that tight end Dennis Pitta broke his hand in practice on Monday. Pitta had surgery Tuesday and is expected to be back by the regular season opener on Sept. 10 against Cincinnati.

With Pitta out, Davon Drew moves up to the No. 2 tight end spot for the preseason. Drew is competing for the third tight end position with rookies Matt Balasavage and Bruce Figgins.

Advantage Tucker: After four days where neither kicker separated themselves, rookie Justin Tucker outperformed veteran Billy Cundiff on Tuesday. Tucker made five of six kicks while Cundiff made four of seven kicks. Both had longs from 60 in perfect weather with little rush.

Injury update: Rookie running back Bernard Pierce was absent from practice with a hamstring injury. Nose tackle Ma'ake Kemoeatu and linebacker Josh Bynes were also absent for undisclosed reasons. Receiver Tommy Streeter (undisclosed) and tackle Ramon Harewood (ankle) returned to practice.

Still out: WR Tandon Doss (hamstring), WR David Reed (ACL), OL Jah Reid (calf), LT Bryant McKinnie (back), DE Pernell McPhee (knee), OLB Courtney Upshaw (shoulder) and DT Haloti Ngata (hamstring) remained absent on Tuesday.

Music man: The Ravens have been playing music during 11-on-11 drills. Among the songs played over the past few practices have been "Renegade" by Styx, "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes, "Baba O'Riley" by The Who and "Black Dog" by Led Zeppelin. Harbaugh said he's had an input on the playlist, which at one time featured songs by rappers Rick Ross and Lil Wayne.

"I like some rap music," Harbaugh said. "That's not one that I like."
