Randy Moss missed the first section of 49ers offseason workouts, but arrived for Phase 2 of their training program on Monday.

Moss had previously been excused from the offseason stuff (GM Trent Baalke called Moss absence "not unexpected by any stretch), taking care of some family business in West Virginia, but called the workouts "eye opening."

"It was eye opening," Moss said, via the 49ers official Twitter account. "Today was first day & we were moving so fast. Today felt like we'd been out here for a week or two."

You know what else was eye opening? The 49ers decision to select Illinois wide receiver A.J. Jenkins with their first-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. And not just because it was a somewhat surprising selection in terms of who the 49ers drafted. It was also surprising in what the 49ers drafted -- a wideout, only a few weeks after signing free agents Mario Manningham and Moss.

Suddenly, the 49ers have, with the presence of former first-round pick Michael Crabtree, a slew of talented wideouts on their roster. Moss is the most talented of all of them, but he's also the oldest, and none of his $2.5 million contract is guaranteed, which means the 49ers aren't locked into keeping him on the roster.

But that also means that Moss now has an increased amount of motivation to look strong during the offseason and leading up into the year as the 49ers begin to make roster decisions. And it also means that Moss isn't exactly a sure-fire lock to make the team's roster.
