On the first day of Redskins OTAs, Mike Shanahan got crushed by cornerback Brandyn Thompson on Monday in an on-field collision that apparently left Washington’s coach feeling woozy. Although Shanahan walked off the field under his own power, a team spokesman said he wasn’t in condition to talk to reporters after the practice.

“Yeah, I saw it. It was pretty bad looking,” linebacker London Fletcher said in remarks distributed by the team. “You know, just obviously concerned about his safety. He wasn’t able to brace himself for the collision either. He had his back to the play, so definitely a very scary, scary feeling for a while out there.”

According to reports, the team was practicing inside its indoor facility, which houses only one field, because of inclement weather. Shanahan had his back turned as Pierre Garcon went out for a deep pass with Thompson covering him at midfield. After he blind-sided Shanahan at full speed, a cart was driven onto the field. But after remaining on the turf for a few minutes, Shanahan got up and walked off.

“He showed some toughness, got up, stuck it out,” said Robert Griffin III. “So that’s the (benchmark) of our team, you know. But it was pretty scary actually to see two guys running full speed smack dab into your coach. We’re glad he got up, glad he was fine. And hopefully he’s fine tomorrow, because usually hits like that don’t kick in until the next day.”

Still, a scary moment for Shanahan and the team he coaches. Here’s hoping he’s feeling OK Tuesday.
