Detroit coach Jim Schwartz' assertion that Calvin Johnson's absence from Monday's workout was a scheduled day off was confirmed when Johnson returned to practice Tuesday.

Johnson participated fully in drills, and his left index finger -- which bore a splint Monday -- didn't appear to bother him when making catches. Schwartz has often given key veterans days off to ensure they receive proper rest, and it appears that Johnson could be in line for similar treatment this season.

Broyles returns, but can he go back-to-back? WR Ryan Broyles participated fully in Detroit's practice Tuesday. Broyles took Monday off to rest his recovering knee. His return to action Tuesday marks the shortest break in camp. Broyles cut well, and he was able to create separation on several routes. Since training camp began, he hasn't participated in back-to-back practices. If Broyles practices Wednesday, it's a good indication that the swelling and soreness that has limited his availability is under control.

Backus sidelined by back tightness: OT Jeff Backus was given the day off Tuesday after complaining of back tightness. Backus didn't seem concerned by the condition, and Schwartz said the decision to rest Backus was precautionary. Backus' absence cleared the way for T Corey Hilliard to take first-team reps. Hilliard is currently battling T Jason Fox for one of Detroit's final roster places. He saw significant time in the Lions' preseason opener, and he performed well during Tuesday's run-blocking drills.

Leshoure remains on sidelines: RB Mikel Leshoure (hamstring) hasn't practiced since the second day of camp, and he remained on the sidelines Tuesday while Kevin Smith and Keiland Williams split first-team RB reps. Leshoure says his condition is improving, and he has worked with trainers at recent practices. With just one practice remaining before Detroit's second preseason game, it's unlikely that Leshoure will be available for action Friday in Baltimore.

Edwards has solid workout: WR Patrick Edwards, who was signed by the Lions as an undrafted free agent, made several nice plays during Tuesday's workout, including an impressive diving grab that earned him praise from players and coaches. Edwards' play in drills has seen him slowly climb up the depth chart, making him a legitimate contender for one of the final WR places. Edwards has also taken part in return drills during special teams periods. The ability to fill multiple roles could give him an edge as roster deadlines approach.

Reiff takes snaps at guard: GM Martin Mayhew cited T Riley Reiff's versatility as a major factor in Detroit's decision to select him with the 23rd overall pick in the 2012 draft. That versatility was on display Tuesday when Reiff took third-team snaps at guard in addition to his second-team snaps at right tackle. Reiff has quickly learned most aspects of Detroit's blocking packages, and he didn't look out of place as an interior lineman. If Reiff is able to master both the guard and tackle positions, he will provide a valuable safety net for the Lions' effective -- but aging -- O-line.
